For the first time in history, two Black quarterbacks will face off in a game which will decide the championship of a professional football league — in the U.S., that is.
The outcome of Super Bowl Lvii will likely be decided by those Black signal-callers: Patrick Mahomes, the newly-minted 2022 Mvp and engine of the Kansas City Chiefs’ dynamic offensive machine, versus Jalen Hurts, also an Mvp finalist and electrifying dual-threat Qb. Both are considered to be among the very best in the NFL, and Mahomes is well on his way...

Byron Allen already gives people the weather. Now he’s offering the news to go with it.
Allen Media Group, the consortium of media companies that includes the Weather Channel, has purchased the assets of the Black News Channel, a Tallahassee, Florida outlet controlled by Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan that declared bankruptcy in March. Allen intends to use the new purchase to build an audience of Black consumers at a time when the media and advertising industries have grown increasingly conscious of trying to reach diverse communities and populations.
“We are excited to have been selected to acquire the Black News Channel, which has approximately 300 million linear and digital subscribers,” said Allen, the company’s founder and CEO, in a prepared statement. “Allen Media Group will deliver a best-in-class network to serve the underserved African-American community and the advertisers who want to reach this extremely valuable audience. Also, we...

Black News Channel — which shut down operations on Friday, just two years after making a splashy debut — has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Florida.
In its Monday filing, the Tallahassee-based network listed $10 million-$50 million in liabilities, and estimated between 200 and 999 creditors are owed money.
“They filed for bankruptcy faster than they paid their employees the money they’re owed,” one former employee told TheWrap on Tuesday. “I received a partial payment this morning for two weeks of work. They still owe me for another week.”
That former staffer was one of roughly 230 who were let go last Friday when the channel ceased operations; the network plans to air repeats for the rest of this month.
The channel, known to viewers as Bnc, was founded by former GOP congressman J.C. Watts and veteran broadcast executive Bob Brillante with a mission to provide news for and about underserved communities. Just months after...

Cable TV outlet Black News Channel has abruptly shut down after two years on the air, and just after hitting new viewership highs during this week’s confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson.
In a memo to employees, CEO Princell Hair cited “challenging market conditions and global financial pressures” for the decision to wind down operations, according to multiple reports. The National Association of Black Journalists, a prominent trade group, confirmed the shutdown in a blog post. It pledged to support the roughly 200 employees affected by the move.
Bnc was co-founded by former Oklahoma Congressman J.C. Watts and longtime TV executive Bob Brillante. After years of planning, the network made its debut in 2020 after billionaire Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid “Shad” Khan signed on as a partner.
The Tallahassee, Fl-based network originally launched in about 33 million households via cable and satellite and eventually got to 50 million households. But...

After months of uncertainty, Black News Channel (Bnc) is shutting down on Friday just two years after its launch.
Multiple employees told TheWrap they were notified individually that Friday would be the last day of live programming for the Tallahassee, Florida-based network. The channel was launched in February 2020 by former GOP congressman J.C. Watts and broadcast executive Bob Brillante to target Black audiences they felt were underserved by other news outlets.
One staffer said Friday department heads contacted individual employees by phone to inform them that they were being let go. “I’m disappointed in the way management handled the situation and their lack of transparency,” the staffer told TheWrap. “I’m saddened because there are so many amazing journalists who care about Black and Brown stories and truly believed in the concept. Now with no notice, their lives and livelihoods are in limbo.”

Thirteen women are suing the Black News Channel for gender discrimination, accusing the Florida-based network of unequal pay for female employees and a workplace culture that forced them “to conform to sexist or misogynistic stereotypes about how women are supposed to behave.”
In an amended complaint filed Tuesday in the Cook County, Illinois, Circuit Court, the 13 plaintiffs allege that executives at the 2-year-old network disciplined or terminated female employees for being too vocal, pushy and aggressive, created a hostile work environment for women and paid women thousands of dollars less per year than their male counterparts.
Ashley Flete, a former anchor who first filed suit with Claudia Jean last August, said that a producer had been “berating” her about being “insufficiently feminine” through her earpiece while she was on air. After filing a complaint with human resources, she said her contract was terminated six months into a two-year contract.

On his program on Thursday, MSNBC host Chris Matthews played a series of clips of self-identified Republicans or surrogates for Mitt Romney’s campaign from the past year for former Congressman J.C. Watts in an effort to get him to admit the Republican party’s leadership were speaking in "dog whistles" to communicate for voters that “we don't like black presidents.”...

Samuel L. Jackson made a surprising confession in the March issue of Ebony.
"I voted for Barack because he was black. Cause that’s why other folks vote for other people — because they look like them," Jackson said, according to the New York Post.
He contended that Obama's message wasn't important, since he believes most politicians will say anything to get elected.
"That’s American politics, pure and simple. [Obama’s] message didn’t mean [anything] to me. In the end, he’s a politician. I just hoped he would do some of what he said he was gonna do. I know politicians ... lie cause they want to get elected," he continued, according to TMZ.
The president is banking on African American support for November's election. Earlier this month, he unveiled a new push to court black voters.
"He needs the support of the African-American community in order to continue to bring positive change to our community,...

Paula Abdul has a penchant for Tweeting famous quotations. In the last week alone, she’s shared with her followers the wisdom of Elbert Hubbard, Evelyn Underhill, J.C. Watts, and Mohandas Gandhi. But did her decision last night to Tweet a Winston Churchill saying — “A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to put its pants on.” — have anything to do with rampant Internet speculation about who’ll be seated at the American Idol judges’ table when the show returns for its tenth season in January 2011? Or, more specifically, could that Tweet have been a...
