Not a companion piece to Unseen, The Unheard is a new Shudder Original that combine the talents of Jeffrey A. Brown, who previously directed The Beach House and writers Michael and Shawn Rasmussen whose credits include Crawl and The Ward. It’s the story of Chloe who caught meningitis and spent six months in a coma as a child. She awoke to find that she had lost her hearing.
More importantly, she had lost her mother as well. She disappeared without a trace during those months. She and her father moved to Maine and she’s tried to put it behind her and get on with her life.
Now a young woman she’s returned to Massachusetts and her family’s Wellfleet summer house...

Watching the cosmic, otherworldly dread unfold in Jeffrey A. Brown's The Beach House was one of my favorite viewing experiences of 2020, so I was thrilled to find out that Brown is back with his next feature-length film, The Unheard.
With the supernatural sci-fi horror film now streaming on Shudder, I caught up with Jeffrey in a new video interview to discuss working with the talented Lachlan Watson, his personal connection to the film's story of hearing loss, and how he brought the film's creepy VHS aesthetic to life on screen. As an added bonus for fans of The Beach House, Jeffrey also talks about what his pitch for The Beach House 2 would have looked like!
You can watch the video interview with Jeffrey below, and in case you missed it, read Cass Clarke's review of The Unheard!

The 23rd annual Boston Underground Film Festival took place at The Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Ma from March 22 to March 26. The genre-blending lineup included premieres, festival favorites, anticipated titles, shorts, and more.
Here’s what I saw at this year’s event…
The Unheard
The festival’s opening night kicked off with the world premiere of The Unheard, which pairs the exciting New England talents of director Jeffrey A. Brown, following up his dynamic debut The Beach House, and writers Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, hot off the success of Alexandre Aja’s Crawl. All three were in attendance for a post-screening Q&a.
Hearing impaired since the age of 8 as a result of meningitis, 20-year-old Chloe Grayden undergoes an experimental gene editing procedure to restore her hearing, which coincides with a homecoming to prepare her family’s empty summer house for sale. She’s the first patient in the clinical trial to show positive results,...

The biggest new release for the week is Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which brings various monsters from the long-running property to the big screen beginning on Thursday night, and it’s joined by several brand new horror movies in the coming days.
Here’s all the new horror releasing March 28 – April 2, 2023!
For daily reminders about new horror releases, be sure to follow @HorrorCalendar.
Up first, BayView Entertainment and Vipco have released Skarecrow: A Curse Never Dies today, which looks to be an ultra-low-budget indie film centered on a killer scarecrow.
In the film, “When the vile James Brothers murder an innocent woman to take over her land, her dying breath places a curse on the family through a scarecrow. Years later, a descendent of the James family has taken his friends to the old cabin for the weekend. They soon find the curse and the scarecrow are still wanting blood.

Before delving further into director Jeffrey A. Brown’s The Unheard, it’s important for me to note that this piece is written from the perspective of a hearing person who has experienced losing and regaining hearing due to illness, but I cannot speak to the Deaf experience. Part of the reason why I was so intrigued about this film was that I could relate to the in-your-bones anxiousness that comes with testing, evaluations, operations, and diagnoses that ultimately amount to the most frustrating phrase to receive in a doctor’s office: “We’ll see.”
Unlike films like Hush or A Quiet Place, The Unheard focuses on a protagonist – portrayed by the effortlessly cool Lachlan Watson (Chucky) – who lost her hearing after a bout of meningitis and seeks to regain partial or full hearing through an experimental operation. Once Chloe has the operation, she starts to hear things – perhaps warnings...

Famed horror director Alexandre Aja, whose credits include The Hills Have Eyes, Horns, Piranha and Mirrors, returns to cinema screens after a three-year absence with Crawl. A creature-feature set during a category five hurricane in Florida. Crawl follows Kaya Scodelario’s Haley in a desperate state for survival with her father Dave (Barry Pepper) as they both become trapped in his basement that is flooding at an enormous pace. Only to be joined by a few hungry alligators for good measure.
Crawl is a return to form on a few levels. Namely elevating the genre from that of the dwindling and limited explosive creature feature genre that has been reappropriated for a more comedic and less cinematic fortune with features from production company The Asylum.

As a lover of “Aqua Terror” and “When Animals Attack” savagery, a smile stayed plastered across my face all screening long. Keep your seventeenth Annabelle sequels and Chucky 2.0 reboots, because 2019 is the Year of the ‘Gator. Aja’s latest is packed sardine-solid with genuine scares, unleashed intensity, and more submerged danger than Caddyshack’s Baby Ruth scene. Am I overselling Crawl? Hell no (not in my eyes). Summer horror greatness has assumed its rightfully scaly form.

“Crawl” is likely to finish third with around $10 million when it launches in 3,170 venues. It’s also debuting in 20 foreign markets.

A summer movie, a natural disaster, a strong young woman in peril, a toothsome underwater predator or two — whaddaya need, a road map? In the grand tradition of Jaws homages, Alexandre Aja’s survivalist horror pits us vulnerable humans against Mother Nature’s little chompers — in this case, massive alligators straight outta the sunshine state’s swamplands. University of Florida swimmer Haley Keller (Kaya Scodelario) gets a worried phone call from her sister (Morfydd Clark) in Boston; their divorced dad (Barry Pepper) hasn’t been returning her calls, and with...

While aquatic horror can be fun any time of the year, there’s just something about a genre movie that pits human characters versus nature’s greatest water-bound predators during these warmer months that really puts me into the summertime mood. And with that in mind, you could say that I was already primed to enjoy Crawl even before the first bloodthirsty alligator snapped into action. Director Alexandre Aja, who already has some experience in this realm with his gore-tastic horror comedy Piranha 3D, proves here yet again that he’s a master manipulator of heightened tension and thrills, but he also delivers up a no-nonsense disaster/killer animal mash-up that doesn’t waste a single minute of its efficient 87-minute running time, and even gives us compelling characters (plus Sugar the dog!) that we give a damn about to boot.

Crawl stars Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner) as a a woman finds herself trapped inside a flooded house during a hurricane… with hungry, angry, alligators! Directed by Alexandre Aja and produced by Sam Raimi, the film – which looks like a reptilian take on Bait 3D – comes from the writing duo of Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, who previously penned the likes of Dark Feed and John Carpenter’s underrated The Ward.
A young woman (Kaya Scodelario), while attempting to save her father during a Category 5 hurricane, finds herself trapped in a flooding house and must fight for her life against alligators.
Crawl is set for release on July 12th.

Tagline: "They Were Here First." Just after a release of several movie stills, horror thriller Crawl now has a trailer and official poster. The graphic warns of alligators, while the movie trailer shows them up close and personal. Crawl was written by brothers Michael and Shawn Rasmussen (The Inhabitants). Paris born director Alexandre Aja (Piranha 3D) helms this environmental disaster title. And, film legend Sam Raimi (Evil Dead) is producer, along with Craig Flores (300). The trailer, which shows character Haley struggling with several threats, is available here - ahead of the film's July theatrical launch. The longer synopsis mentions a massive hurricane. Set in Florida, the influx of water has turned a neighbourhood into an alligator's breeding ground. Now, Haley (Kaya Scodelario) - after reuniting with her father (Barry Pepper) - must find a way to survive the night, until the flood waters recede. Together, father and daughter will have...

French extremist turned creature feature enthusiast Alexandre Aja has a new monster movie on the horizon. Decidedly less tongue-in-cheek than Piranha 3D, Crawl looks like a harrowing survival thriller. When a massive hurricane hits her Florida hometown, Haley (played by Kaya Scodelario) ignores evacuation orders to search for her missing father (Barry Pepper). The two become trapped by quickly encroaching floodwaters, and as time runs out to escape the strengthening storm, Haley and her father discover that the rising water level is the least of their fears. Crawl was co-written by brothers Michael and Shawn Rasmussen who wrote The Ward for John Carpenter and the great, low-key supernatural horror film The Inhabitants. Crawl was produced by Craig Flores (300), Sam Raimi (Don't Breathe) and Aja....

The new horror film “Crawl” from Paramount Pictures is the story of a father and daughter trapped in a hurricane who find themselves hunted by vicious, monster-sized alligators.
Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper star in the latest film from “The Hills Have Eyes” director Alexandre Aja, and producers Sam Raimi and Craig Flores. And yes, the first trailer for the film is as predictably wild as you’d expect.
“Come on you son of a b—,” Scodelario screams as she hides within a bathtub as an alligator flails against the shower door.

Michael and Shawn Rasmussen wrote the film that Aja directs and also produces. Gregory Levasseur, Justin Bursch and Lauren Selig serve as executive producers.
As a public service announcement, the monsters in “Crawl” are in fact alligators and not crocodiles.

Nearly one decade after making viewers afraid to go in the water (without risking the loss of an appendage) with Piranha 3D, Alexandre Aja is bringing more submerged scares to the surface this summer in Crawl. Featuring a daughter (Kaya Scodelario) and her father (Barry Pepper) fighting for their lives against a hurricane and some very hungry alligators, the first trailer for Crawl has been unleashed by Paramount Pictures.
Directed from Aja from a screenplay by Michael Rasmussen and Shawn Rasmussen, Crawl will swim into cinemas on July 12th from Paramount. You can check out the synopsis and trailer below, and visit the movie's official Instagram page to see a creative mosaic for the film.

An old Carriage House in New England is the setting and principle character in the Rasmussen Brothers' latest indie haunting, The Inhabitants. Michael and Shawn Rasmussen wrote the oft-maligned (yet beautifully rendered) final John Carpenter picture, The Ward, in 2010 and since then they have concerned themselves with blood stained institutions that will not give up their ghosts easily. They took their own directorial stab at the haunted hospital in 2013 with Dark Feed. Here, it is a bed and breakfast inn located in Massachusetts, somewhere in the vicinity of Ipswitch or Danvers, the latter famously known as Salem Village. Indeed, the 'Witch Museum' up the street is the primary tourism attraction of the region, not counting the verdant, foggy atmosphere that offers some of the best production value...

When you’re setting your New England ghost story against the backdrop of a Salem Witch Trial past, it’s quite the coup to secure a locale as famous as the Noyes-Parris House built in 1669. Now owned by author Glenn Cooper (who serves as executive producer), its historical resonance as the home of Reverend Samuel Parris is felt. It was his daughter Betty and niece Abigail Williams who made the first accusations to begin the tragic true-life events that unfolded. It should be no surprise then that Michael and Shawn Rasmussen would decide to let the spectral ghouls of their film The Inhabitants be children led by the spirit of a woman hung for witchcraft (India Pearl‘s Lydia) after a flu epidemic hit the community’s youth centuries earlier.
The Noyes-Parris House is transformed into the fictional March Carriage House—a quaint little bed and breakfast with a well-documented and haunted past.
