Netflix’s new thriller series Devil in Ohio has shot to the top of its TV rankings.
The series, which is inspired loosely by true events, as well as Daria Polatin’s 2017 novel of the same name, debuted on the streaming service earlier this month.
Starring Emily Deschanel, Madeleine Arthur and Sam Jaeger, Devil in Ohio focuses on the investigation surrounding a satanic cult in rural Ohio.
In a three-star review for The Independent, Annabel Nugent wrote: “In lesser shows, dipping into the past is a clunky distraction from the action at hand, but the flashbacks of Devil in Ohio are welcome moments that pull back the veil on the mystery at pace and for once actually deliver on the darkness promised by a show’s premise.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for all of Devil in Ohio.] Netflix’s new limited series thriller ends on a very unsettling note, which is what makes it so good. In Devil in Ohio, hospital psychiatrist Suzanne (Emily Deschanel) brings a cult escapee, Mae (Madeleine Arthur), into her home. The rest of her family is less than pleased, especially as the cult want her back and the teen exhibits strange behavior. By series’ end, Suzanne and her husband Peter (Sam Jaeger) are separated, and he’s living with the kids. Suzanne is with Mae… but learns, in the final moments, that the teen staged her own kidnapping and had willingly returned to the cult. (The psychiatrist rescued her.) Daria Polatin, who wrote the book inspired by a true story and serves as creator, showrunner, and executive producer on the limited series, breaks down that ending and addresses if there will be a second season after that cliffhanger. That...

A hospital psychiatrist, Suzanne Mathis (Emily Deschanel) takes in a mysterious, traumatized teen patient, Mae (Madeleine Arthur), in Devil in Ohio, Netflix‘s new suspense thriller based on the novel by Daria Polatin. Mae wants to assimilate with the Mathis family, including Suzanne’s three daughters, but she’s also trying to hide things from her past. “You’ll see there’s twists and turns with what Mae does because of her trauma. This whole thing plays with trust, suspicion, what’s good, what’s bad, what’s evil,” Deschanel says. As for the “devil” of the title? “We dive into Mae’s background, which is pretty scary — her community, where she comes from. We don’t have to be scared of many supernatural things here — it’s human beings who are the scary entity in this show but there’s an element of devil worship,” Deschanel says. “Mae just...

Netflix is, once again, exploring unsettling, thrilling themes, this time through its original limited series "Devil in Ohio." Based on the bestselling novel by Daria Polatin, who also serves as an executive producer, the upcoming series features "Bones" actor Emily Deschanel along with "Parenthood" actor Sam Jaeger and "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" star Madeleine Arthur.
"Devil in Ohio" centers on psychiatrist Dr. Suzanne Mathis (Deschanel) as she temporarily shelters a teenager and begins to experience unusual and unsettling occurrences within her home. The storyline definitely sounds like it could be based in real life, but it isn't entirely drawn from a singular true story. With "Devil in Ohio" hitting Netflix on Sept. 2, let's explore the inspiration behind the streamer's new spooky series.

It’s hard to recall a time when Netflix Original indeed meant “original”. Lately, it’s been adaptation after adaptation. The output varies in quality, most coming in at a mid-level rating best described as “background noise while I do my laundry” but a few surpass all expectations (The Queen’s Gambit). Others make me reconsider my subscription for good (Echoes). The latest to throw its hat in the ring is Devil in Ohio, not to be confused with the streamer’s Robert Pattinson film The Devil All the Time, a sinister tale incidentally also set in Ohio.
The eight-episode series puts to screen Daria Polatin’s 2017 novel of the same name, itself inspired by a true story. Bones star Emily Deschanel plays Suzanne, a mother and psychiatrist who invites her new young patient (a believably wide-eyed Madeleine Arthur) into her home when she’s brought into the hospital after a traumatic episode.

Just what will bringing in a cult escapee do to the Mathis family in Devil in Ohio? It’s going to be one wild, suspenseful ride. In the Netflix limited series, inspired by a true story and based on Daria Polatin’s best-selling thriller novel, hospital psychiatrist Dr. Suzanne Mathis (Emily Deschanel) brings cult escapee Mae (Madeleine Arthur) home with her. But Suzanne’s world is quickly turned upside down as that threatens to tear her family apart. Polatin, who serves as creator, showrunner, and executive producer on the thriller, talks about casting the key roles of Suzanne and Mae and teases how the limited series will end. Talk about casting Suzanne and Mae. Daria Polatin: I actually went to college with Emily — we went to Boston University together and studied theater and did plays together. So I had worked with her before and knew her as a friend and...

What starts as a family drama quickly spins into a nail-biter of a thriller in Netflix‘s Devil in Ohio. Has Ohio psychiatrist Suzanne Mathis’ latest patient, a teen named Mae (Madeleine Arthur), been abused? She isn’t saying. “The show explores what trauma can do to people,” says Deschanel. Mae’s reason for keeping quiet: the time she spent as a member of a cult. Unable to find housing for Mae, Suzanne invites her home with her husband Peter (Sam Jaeger) and their three daughters. “It’s a huge ethical breach,” admits Deschanel, “but I understand that impulse; you’re worried about her going onto the streets.” Mae’s presence, and the unfolding mystery, “causes shifts [in relationships] in the family,” adds Deschanel. That’s when things get scary. “The question we’re always asking with Mae: Is she a force for good or evil?” says Daria Polatin, who adapted the...

"No one ever leaves, except your girl." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a true crime, cult thriller series titled Devil in Ohio, available for streaming this September. The suspenseful thriller is inspired by a true story and the best-selling book from author, showrunner, and Executive Producer Daria Polatin. When hospital psychiatrist Dr. Suzanne Mathis shelters a mysterious, young cult escapee, her world is all turned upside down as the strange girl’s arrival threatens to tear her own family apart. Adapted from Polatin's best-selling book which is scarily a (mostly) real story. Makes you want to stay away from Ohio, huh? Starring Emily Deschanel as Suzanne, Madeleine Arthur as Mae, Sam Jaeger as Peter, Gerardo Celasco as Detective Lopez, Xaria Dotson as Jules, Alisha Newton as Helen, and Naomi Tan as Dani. This looks like it has some supernatural tinges, but mostly just seems like some deranged people in some Satantic cult.

WGA West’s Middle Eastern Writers Committee Urges Hollywood To Be More Inclusive, Less Stereotypical
Members of the WGA West’s Middle Eastern Writers Committee are urging the film and television industry to be more inclusive and less stereotypical in its storytelling.
“Reach out to us. Get to know our work. And most of all, take more chances on us to both tell our own stories and contribute to the ones being crafted in writers rooms all over town,” they wrote Monday in an open letter to the industry. But they noted: “How can we get in the rooms to tell other stories if we’re not even being hired to tell our own?”
The group said they formed the committee “primarily on the basis of one disappointing fact. As reported in the Wgaw Inclusion Report of 2020, Middle Eastern writers are dead last, making up only 0.3% of employed writers. You read that right. 0.3%. That’s pretty close to 0%. Castle Rock season 2 delivers its best episode yet with a bold exploration of Annie Wilkes' past. Our review of "The Laughing Place"...

This Castle Rock review contains spoilers.
Castle Rock Season 2 Episode 5
A year ago, I would have cringed at the thought of an Annie Wilkes origin story. Surely, a character as iconic as Stephen King's psychotic fiction fan needs no prologue in 2019. A ham-handed "Misery: The Beginning" Hollywood movie would almost certainly defile the character worse than when Paul Sheldon decided to kill off his most famous heroine.
