Palme d’Or winner Cristian Mungiu and his Bucharest-based company Mobra Films will join forces with Poland’s Kijora Films on “Tales of the Golden Age – The Warsaw Pact,” a follow up to his 2009 sketch comedy referencing urban legends from the Ceausescu regime.
Expanding to accommodate stories from different ex-communist Eastern European countries, including Poland, it will be written by Mungiu and directed by Ioana Uricaru. France’s Les Films du Worso is also on board.

Visions du Réel winner Tomasz Wolski will focus on “A Year in the Life of the Country” next, Variety can reveal exclusively.
The Polish helmer – whose latest film “In Ukraine,” co-directed with Piotr Pawlus, premiered in Berlin – is set to explore the turbulent period of martial law, imposed on Dec. 13, 1981 by General Wojciech Jaruzelski in Communist Poland after a wave of strikes.

“While the Green Grass Grows” by Peter Mettler won the Grand Prix of the International Feature Film Competition at the 54th edition of Visions du Réel, in Nyon, Switzerland, on Friday.
The Swiss-Canadian director was competing with an unusual project: made in the form of a diary filmed from 2019 to 2021, “While the Green Grass Grows” is in fact a series of seven episodes with a total duration of about 11 hours. It was the finished parts one and six of the series, totalling 166 minutes, that were unveiled in world premiere at Visions du Réel and running for the Grand Prix.
The whole project was also presented in the Work-in-Progress section in order to find other financing and distribution platforms to finalize the remaining parts, which have already been widely edited. Swiss documentary festival Visions du Réel (VdR) has revealed the line-up for its 54th edition which opens with Juliette de Marcillac’s Nightwatchers and runs April 21-30.

The festival kicks off on April 21 with the world premiere of “Nightwatchers” by Juliette de Marcillac and runs through April 30. The event will screen a total of 163 films from 46 countries, with a 50-50 parity between female and male directors.

The Polish film industry is embracing variety and high-profile international collaborations, with a slew of new co-productions already generating buzz among buyers and festival programmers. “More and more established filmmakers, who used to look for collaborators in Romania or Hungary, are now coming to Poland — mostly because we are backed by concrete institutions and because there is money,” says producer Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska of Madants, heading to Berlinale’s European Film Market with “Ultima Thule” and Goran Stolevski’s “Housekeeping for Beginners.”
“Our crews speak English and work abroad. We are visible internationally,” she adds.
Madants is also behind James Napier Robertson’s upcoming Polish-Kiwi title “Joika,” one of six international co-productions backed by the Polish Film Institute in 2022. London-based world sales company Taskovski Films has acquired documentary “In Ukraine,” directed by Piotr Pawlus and Tomasz Wolski, which will world premiere in Berlinale’s Forum section.
The film looks at the lives of Ukrainians who stayed in their country after the Russian invasion or have returned home.
In a statement the directors said: “How to tell the story about war? How to face a topic that we are constantly informed about through television, radio and the internet? What can be offered to an audience who has seen explosions, fired rockets, drone shots, scenes of Russian tanks being shot down, CCTV footage capturing a hail of missiles, or Russian soldiers looting?
“’In Ukraine’ doesn’t show the war but its consequences. Through a simple concept that relies on anticipated shots shot with a static camera, we are looking at the collective. The main character is a country at war. The film rarely features dialogue.
The film looks at the lives of Ukrainians who stayed in their country after the Russian invasion or have returned home.

IndieWire exclusively announces the lineup for the Museum of Modern Art’s 2022 Doc Fortnight, its annual series of documentary screenings at the New York museum. In one of the biggest deals on titles at this year’s Visions du Réel, Switzerland’s premier documentary festival, Radio Télévision Suisse (Rts), the public broadcasting organization for the French-speaking part of the country, has acquired eleven titles from Visions du Réel’s 2021 selection.
The deal is part of a longstanding partnership between the Swiss doc festival and Rts, which selects around a dozen VdR titles every year.
Some are co-productions under the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation’s pact with the audiovisual industry to increase subsidies for independent Swiss production, including “Radiograph of a Family” by Iranian director Firouzeh Khosrovani.

Vienna-based sales company Square Eyes has acquired Tomasz Wolski’s Polish animated documentary “1970,” which picked up the Special Jury Award at this year’s Swiss doc fest Visions du Réel.
The stop-motion animated pic, which is screening at the Krakow Film Festival, chronicles the increasingly violent efforts by Poland’s communist leaders to end widespread demonstrations over rising prices of food and other everyday items.

Including re-enactment in documentaries can be a tricky business - not just because actors so often seem like a pale facsimile of the original but also, particularly in the case of historical films, because the look of the period in question can be so difficult to recreate. Tomasz Wolski comes up with a neat and imaginative solution for his latest documentary, using animator Robert Sowa's stop-motion puppets to accompany audio of telephone conversations that were recorded between Polish apparatchiks during protests in the country in the run-up to Christmas 1970.
By creating a little microcosm of the world via the puppetry, it's much easier for Wolski to keep a grip on the mood, as these grey men in their grey offices - each recreated in fine detail - chat back and forth while cigarette smoke curls about them. The sound design, with drumming fingers and flipping light switches, along with a brooding.

Faya Dayi Photo: Jessica Beshir Jessica Beshir's Faya Dayi won the Grand Jury prize at this year's Visions du Réel documentary film festival, which presented its online event from Switzerland.
The film, which also won the Fipresci award, given by film critics, considers a complex picture of modern Ethiopia and its relationship with the stimulant leaf khat.
The jury - comprised of filmmaker Thomas Imbach, Torino Film Lab artistic director Savina Neirotti and MoMA curator Josh Siegel - said: "Interweaving an ancient Sufi parable about the quest for the water of eternal life with a rigorous meditation on labour, exploitation, and exile, and moving freely among different levels of reality and consciousness, Jessica Beshir has created a dreamlike fable for our own uncertain times."

Swiss documentary film festival Visions du Réel (VdR) has revealed the full lineup for its 52nd edition, which, for the second year running, will screen as a online event, this round round over April 15-25.
The program, which comprises of 142 films originating from 58 countries, was revealed live in a Zoom press conference this morning, broadcast from the Cinéma Capitole in the festival’s host town of Nyon, Switzerland.
Among the 13 titles competing in VdR’s main, a doc feature exploring a health system in the throes of change. The zeigeisty debut feature of Swiss filmmaker Marie-Eve Hildbrand will also open the festival on 15 April.
The festival also announced 37 medium-to-short films from first-time directors. In a statement Emilie Bujès, artistic director of Visions du Réel praised this year’s “powerful and eclectic” selection.

Other winners of the 60th edition of the Polish festival include Sunless Shadows, The Whale from Lorino and Self Portrait. Romanian filmmaker Radu Ciorniciuc's Sundance prizewinner Acasă - My Home has won the top award at the 60th Krakow Film Festival, the Golden Horn for the Director of the Best Film in the International Documentary Competition. Camerimage, the weeklong celebration of cinematography in Bydgoszcz, Poland, comes to a close today by handing out its prestigious Frog prizes. The big winner was South Korean drama “The Fortress,” which won the top prize, the Golden Frog, in the Main Competition. The film directed by Dong-Hyuk Hwang and lensed by Ji Yong Kim was a massive hit in its home country in late 2017 and has since been released in 28 countries, including the U.S., reaching 3.8 million viewers worldwide.

The two top juried awards of the Los Angeles Film Festival are the Narrative Award and Documentary Award, each carrying an unrestricted $50,000 cash prize, funded by Film Independent, for the winning film’s director.

The 2010 Los Angeles Film Festival is set to run June 17-27 in a brand new location. Oh, it’s still in L.A, but it’s moving across town, from Westwood — where it’s been held the past few years — all the way over to Downtown.
The main “hub” for the fest will be the new L.A. Live complex, but there will also be screenings at other locations, such as the Downtown Independent and Redcat theaters. The city is really trying to build downtown up into a major arts and culture hub, so the festival moving there fits in with that agenda. Film Independent, the organization that runs Laff, also runs the annual Independent Spirit Awards, an event that also moved downtown — from Santa Monica — this year.

This is a not a festival report because the festival it deals with – Dok 2009, Leipzig – happened several months ago. But it is about what film juries appear to prefer today especially in the documentary medium. Leipzig is a beautiful city in the eastern part of Germany and holds a wonderful film festival each year for documentary and animated films called Dok Leipzig. Apart from the competition sections for international and German documentaries and the corresponding ones for animated films, the festival also has (among several other things) a young cinema section - called Generation Dok- and retrospectives dedicated to masters of the medium.
