Stoke-on-Trent filmmaker John Williams (no relation to the film composer of the same name) made his name, at least in the horror mainstream, with 2017’s Crispy’s Curse, despite having lensed The Mothertown and The Slayers before it. Now comes his latest film, Tales of the Creeping Death, a highly-anticipated low-budget horror anthology that aims to recapture the spirit of the anthologies of old from British studios such as Hammer and Amicus. Hell, the title even screams a homage to Tigon’s last British horror production The Creeping Flesh!

As quickly as the summer movie season of 2021 seemed to come upon us, it’s already about to begin its long, languid slide through the dog days of August into fall. That’s not to say that theaters won’t still have plenty of interesting fare to encounter, with films like The Suicide Squad, Free Guy, Respect, Candyman and The Night House all on deck. Hopefully the other hideous sequel happening at the moment — Pandemic 2: The Delta Variant — won’t set any of these potential hits back.
In the spirit of keeping August entertaining, Netflix is rolling out a slew of new streaming additions as well, including an underrated Spielberg gem, fantastic teen comedies both old and new, a couple of stoner classics and perhaps the finest film from the canon of one of the modern era’s most revered directors. We’ve rounded up our recommendations below, and...

At a time when we are all in such desperate need for good news, the announcement that Charles Grodin has passed away comes as an especially cruel punch to the gut. In everything he appeared in, he glittered like a rare jewel and perhaps it’s only now that he’d left us, that we’ll realise what an invaluable jewel he was.
In a career that stretched back to the 1950s, Grodin was an actor, director and a successful writer too, more comfortable on stage or sat behind a typewriter. It was on screen though that his magically droll, put-on persona came to worldwide attention.
Smaller parts in films like Rosemary’s Baby and Catch-22 gave way to major roles in The Heartbreak Kid and the 1976 King Kong remake. In everything he did, no matter how talented his fellow cast members were, it was more often than not Charles Grodin...

This is the end of This Is England - and bringing his powerful working-class saga to a close would seem no mean feat for series mastermind Shane Meadows. Both the original movie and its TV spinoffs have been of a spectacularly high quality, Meadows' truthful scripts and the scarily authentic performances of the cast fostering our deep investment in the characters.
That said, last week's episode was a devastating outpouring of emotion that set the stage superbly for this grand finale, with Milky (Andrew Shim) plotting revenge on Combo (Stephen Graham) - the reformed thug who once viciously assaulted him.
In its final TV outing, This Is England finally addresses that brutal moment from the '03 film - something that until now it's always danced around. There's a feeling of coming full circle that permeates this finale from the off, Meadows opening with one last example of his trademark montage.

Jon Rosling’s micro-budget feature secures distribution deal.
Eye Films has secured a global distribution deal for Five Pillars with Us-based Ytinifni Pictures.
Jon Rosling’s feature stars George Newton, Tom Bott and Mhairi Calvey, and tells the story of a group of people whose lives collide in interweaving stories of liberty, identity, tolerance, responsibility and class.
Rosling commented: “The film itself was made on a mega-micro-budget - just £3,500 - so it was an additional challenge as an indie film-maker to make a feature length film, of quality and capable of release. We feel we have a film that can stand confidently alongside some bigger budget productions.
“This distribution deal with Ytinifni Pictures is the best offer for us because gives a global reach for Five Pillars.”...

Evil witches are hotter now than the stakes they were once ludicrously burned at, and movies involving them are sprouting up everywhere, including this latest indie flick that looks to be home to all types of devilry, Molly Crows.
Directed by Ray Wilkes, Molly Crows stars George Newton and Mercy Grainer.
Synopsis
When seven-year-old Jess and her alcoholic mother arrive in Haslem, she’s an easy target for the brutal bullying culture. But there’s something different about Jess. She can see and hear things that other people can’t. When Jess is brutalized in a country lane, the ancient spirits of the area appear, angry and full of vengeance. The townspeople take the law into their own hands and commit a terrible act upon an innocent, as brutal and unforgivable as the notorious Witchfinders from centuries past.

How digital cameras saved Shane Meadows' sanity and defined the look and feel of the latest This is England instalment
So This is England is over again. For three luminous, heart-wrenching nights, the lives of Shaun, Woody, Lol and the crew completely transformed the mood and quality of advent TV, giving us a break from the mawkish seasonal "treats" we're more familiar with.
Shane Meadows' semi-autobiographical series has become known for its gritty realism, its grasp on the dank, cold colours of crumbling council estates, but also for the warmth of its brilliant cast.
Interestingly, capturing the feel of these places and these lives has been as much about technology as it has about Meadows mining his own childhood and teen years for inspiration. Behind the scenes, This Is England charts how Meadows has struggled with budgetary limitations throughout his career, and how the digital revolution has allowed...
