While I used to watch series quite a lot a few years ago, considering my regular job and reviewing movies leaves me very little time for them, I have more or less stopped watching them noawadays. Additionally, many modern series tend to rely on the same kind of themes and issues, and quite frankly are aesthetically unappealing to me, which is also why I tend to go for a movie rather than the newest season of “Game of Thrones”. However, there are a few exceptions to the rule, and “Pachinko”, based on Min Jin Lee’s novel, certainly counts as one for several reasons. While the series, which is streaming at Apple TV, offers interesting characters and themes, it does not seem to be mentioned in any of the best-of lists (at least not the ones I have read thus far), which is all the more reason to mention it in this format.

This year, the Best New Series (Scripted and Non-Scripted) and Best TV Ensemble Cast Spirit Awards categories remain intact, but the two individual TV acting ones have been overhauled. When it’s all said and done, historians may look back on 2022 as the year TV’s bubble finally burst. The industry’s collective reevaluation of streaming is already leading to tighter budgets and “moderated” spending. Networks that once competed in the originals space are now pretty much out of the game. Broadcast continues to bank on sports and reality TV. If these trends continue, the scripted TV count could recede to, well, not reasonable levels — we’re still facing hundreds of series every year for the foreseeable future — but perhaps an output that doesn’t feel quite so crushing.
Well, I’ll believe it when I see it. Despite market indicators, it’s hard to imagine a lighter load when you’re still climbing out from under an avalanche. 2022 is expected to set a record for scripted programming, driven in part by the Covid pandemic’s production bottleneck giving way,...

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details about the season one finale of Pachinko, titled “Chapter Eight.”
The Pachinko season ender offers optimism and growth from heartbreaking losses for nearly all generations of the Baek family.
The episode begins in 1938, years after Noa’s birth. Now seven years old, Noa prepares for baby brother Mozasu’s doljabi ceremony. Just before audiences can see what fate-determining item Mozasu picks, a remixed, pop version of the opening sequence livens things up.
From Mozasu’s dol to Hana’s (Mari Yamamoto) final moments, the finale spans the cycle of life. In the present, Hana’s surrounded by her loved ones, including Sunja (Yuh-jung Youn) and Etsuko (Kaho Minami), who have no choice but to accept her eventual death. Tragedy also strikes in the past, with Noa and Sunja (Minha Kim) learning that Isak (Steve Sang-Hyun Noh) has been arrested for suspected treason against the emperor.

Depicting an ancestral journey was key for main title designers Angus Wall and Nadia Tzuo in developing the title sequence for Apple TV Plus’ series, “Pachinko,” a show that traces the fate of a Korean family and spans multiple countries, decades and generations.
At the heart of the journey is Solomon Baek, played by Jin Ha, a young employee at an international firm. He returns to his roots, reconnecting with his father Mozasu (Soji Arai), owner of a pachinko game parlor, and grandmother Sunja (Youn Yuh-jung), with a lens on the younger Sunja (Minha Kim and Jeon Yuna), who leaves everything behind for a new life in Japan, a country that wants no part of her.

Apple TV+’s newest drama Pachinko, based on the award-winning book by Min Jin Lee, offers poignant takeaways about family, survival and love. But, viewers should also expect to walk away with The Grass Roots’ “Let’s Live For Today” stuck in their heads.
The psychedelic anthem scores the series’ title sequence, which weaves together a visual tapestry with the past and present of Korea’s sprawling history. (You can watch it below.) As The Grass Roots sing of living and loving for today, age-worn images of Korean women and men in traditional wear lead to baby photos from the late 20th century, which transition into footage of a bustling Shibuya Crossing in Japan. A convergence of old and new, the high-energy opener is just one of the ways Apple TV+’s Pachinko highlights the link between the present and the generations that came before.

The newest series from Apple TV+, "Pachinko," tells a sprawling story of multiple generations of a Korean family living in Japan. Sunja moves from her family's home in Busan to Osaka during the Japanese occupation of Korea, and her family stays there for decades. She, along with her husband, Isak (Steve Sanghyun Noh), her son, Mozasu (Soji Arai), and her grandson, Solomon (Jin Ha), struggle with always being considered outsiders in Japan, where they face racism and xenophobia from Japanese society. They also dip back and forth between speaking Japanese and Korean in their speech, and "Pachinko" has an interesting, visual way of showing when they're speaking each language.
The creators of the show - showrunner Soo Hugh and directors Kogonada and Justin Chon - came up with a simple solution to help viewers who don't speak Japanese and Korean know when characters are speaking one or the other. When characters are speaking Korean,...

There’s a beautifully drawn moment in the fourth episode of “Pachinko,” Apple TV Plus’ new cross-generational epic, in which a young woman (Minha Kim) is served white rice as a final meal in Korea before setting out to the unknown. It’s moving on its merits — this character, Sunja, has already been through a great deal, and a meal lovingly prepared by her mother (Inji Jeong) has a certain symbolic weight all its own. But it’s bolstered by our knowledge, conveyed in the episode before, that, later in life, Sunja (played in old age by Oscar-winner Yuh-Jung Youn) reminisced about the quality of Korean rice, noting that it had “nuttier” flavor and “a bit of a harder chew;” later in life, she’d tell her grandson it was “a luxury.”
That’s an example of “Pachinko” using its central device — an eagerness to hop around in time and geography — elegantly.

In the race among the big streamers to focus more and more on content with global appeal — a challenge Netflix has been facing for years as it’s more or less hit a ceiling with stateside subscribers — Apple TV+ has hit the jackpot with “Pachinko,” a trilingual prestige drama that’s sure to rack up award nominations, appeal to the coveted Asian markets, and stun audiences anywhere with its Dickensonian soul and miraculous performances.
It’s clear that Apple has thrown its unparalleled resources into the new series, but unlike some of its other high-budget marquee projects, which often feel a bit airless for their slick production, “Pachinko” backs up the style with gritty authenticity and daring creative swings.
“Miraculous” is a word that constantly came to mind while watching the eight-episode first season. Creator Soo Hugh and directors Kogonada and Justin Chon were tasked with several impossible tasks: doing...

Adapted from the bestselling book of the same name, the upcoming Apple TV+ drama series "Pachinko" tells the story of a Korean immigrant family as they struggle to find their way after immigrating to Japan. The "Pachinko" cast features Jin Ha, Anna Sawai, Minha Kim, Soji Arai, Kaho Minami, and Lee Minho - who plays Hansu, a mysterious outsider who's associated with organized crime. "I could really relate to the strength and resilience of the people who had to live those desperate and difficult times," Minho told Variety about his "much darker" role. "And my character, Hansu, has his own way of survival, which is quite heartbreaking."
Though American audiences may not be as familiar with Minho's work, he's acted in a handful of movies and TV shows, including "Legend of the Blue Sea," "The King: Eternal Monarch," and "Boys Over Flowers," which is considered his breakthrough role. In the latter,...

Korean superstar Lee Minho sent camera flashbulbs into a frenzy on Wednesday night at the premiere of his new Apple TV Plus series “Pachinko” at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles.
Based on the bestselling book by Min Jin Lee, “Pachinko” chronicles a Korean immigrant family across four generations, with its story centered around matriarch Sunja, played by newcomers Yu-na Jeon and Minha Kim, as well as Oscar-winner Yuh-Jung Youn. Lee plays Hansu, whose romance with Sunja changes the course of both their lives.
Despite his lengthy resume, and his worldwide celebrity, Lee Minho actively pursued the producers behind the show and auditioned for the role. On the red carpet, the actor explained why he simply had to be part of the show.

"Every country has their own history - sometimes it's beautiful, but sometimes it's ugly." Indeed. Apple has revealed a featurette for the series Pachinko, based on the bestselling book of the same name. Streaming on Apple TV+ starting next week. Epic in scope and intimate in tone, the story begins with a forbidden love and crescendos into a sweeping saga journeying between Korea, Japan and America to tell an unforgettable story of war and peace, love and loss, triumph and reckoning. The series stars Soji Arai as Mozasu, Jin Ha as Solomon, Inji Jeong as Yangjin, Minha Kim as teenage Sunja, Lee Minho as Hansu, Kaho Minami as Etsuko, Steve Sanghyun Noh as Isak, Anna Sawai as Naomi, Junwoo Han as Yoseb, Jung Eun-chae as Young Kyunghee, Jimmi Simpson as Tom, Yu-na Jeon as young Sunja, and Academy Award-winning actress Yuh-Jung Youn as Sunja. Very often, TV adaptations of books naturally play out like fixed objects. There’s a built-in framework for an episodic journey that fulfills what’s on the page as an exercise in transposing. Aside from the emotional richness of the new Apple TV+ series “Pachinko,” it becomes apparent very quickly that what sets this eight-episode season apart is that it plays out more as a collective memory than a written history. Drawing from Min Jin Lee’s sprawling bestselling novel, which traces the fate of a Korean family across multiple countries and generations, “Pachinko” is a gorgeous drama built around observing both the crisp and hazy all at once. It’s a century-spanning tale that draws on the untidy nature of remembering the past to fashion an experience all its own.
Despite its circuitous path, “Pachinko” is at least clear in the main individuals along the way. There’s Solomon...

Apple+’s adaptation of Min Jin Lee’s historical-fiction epic Pachinko bounces back and forth between several phases of its heroine Sunja’s life: growing up in Korea under the yoke of Japanese rule, where she’s played as a girl in the 1920s by Yu-na Jeon, and as a young woman in the 1920s played by Minha Kim; then her late-Eighties retirement in Japan (where she’s played by Youn Yuh-jung), reflecting back on her life’s many triumphs, tragedies, and compromises. In one scene in 1989, Sunja and her...

Ryusuke Hamaguchi has been making quite a splash in the festival circuit for the last few years, with titles like “Asako I&ii”, “Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy” and “Drive My Car” screening all over the world and winning a plethora of awards. Hamaguchi, however, is not a newcomer, since he has been shooting movies since 2003, with the latter film being his 15th. It is interesting, thus, to check the path that led him to the place he inhabits now in international cinema, and his third feature, “The Depths” provides a great chance to do so.
