John John Florence never decided to be a professional surfer. He was raised to be one. For the North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii native, the beach was the backdrop of his childhood. By three years old, he had already ridden his first wave. “My mom was pushing me in on a bodyboard,” he recalls in Rolling Stone’s “The First Time” video, in which he shares other surfing memories.
It wasn’t long before Florence became the youngest surfer (at age 13) to compete for the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Then,...

Last year, the Academy documentary branch had to grapple with a record 170 documentary feature submissions for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar. This year, it’s not so bad: only 166 were entered. The short list of 15 will be announced, along with eight others for the first time on a single date this year: December 17.

A whopping 166 documentary features have been submitted to the academy for consideration at the 2019 Oscars. That is down by four from last year’s record 170 submissions. Among these contenders are all of the highest grossing documentaries of the year including “Free Solo,” “Rbg” and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”
To winnow the entries down to the 15 semi-finalists that will be announced on December 17, the academy is sending monthly packages of the newly eligible documentary feature screeners to all 400 or so members of the documentary branch. While all members are encouraged to watch as many of these as they can, one-fifth of the voters are assigned each title. In late November, each branch member will submit a preferential ballot listing their top 15 choices.

In a year that has seen multiple documentaries find mainstream success, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the list of 166 docs that have been submitted for Oscar consideration this year.
Among the films on the list are Michael Moore’s anti-Trump polemic “Fahrenheit 11/9,” as well as CNN Films’ Ruth Bader Ginsburg biography “Rbg” and Focus’ Mister Rogers retrospective “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”

Members of the Academy’s documentary branch received a generous gift from AMPAS on Friday: 77 new films that had qualified in this year’s Best Documentary Feature category.
And it turned what had been a modest year for docs — with a total of 83 films included in June, July, August and September groups — into one in which the number of eligible films that voters would need to watch nearly doubled.
The Academy also promised voters in the branch to expect a final batch of films in early November — which, if it hits double digits, will set a new record in the category.

The Maui Film Festival celebrates its 19th anniversary this year, and, despite taking place in an ever-more crowded calendar of summer film fests, its popularity continues to grow. The event attracts locals and mainlanders alike, and draws both casual fans and ardent cineastes with its unique mixture of sun, sand and life-affirming cinema.
And this time around, in an unexpected turn, the eruption of the Kilauea Volcano on the neighboring Big Island of Hawaii has raised the Maui fest’s profile to new highs.

The world may be looking at her recently-leaked Playboy photos, but life's a beach for Lindsay Lohan. The actress jetted off to Hawaii this week for some R&R -- and to escape the publicity surround her racy shoot.
Lohan was spotted in Hawaii Friday watching the Billabong Pipeline Masters from the porch of a private residence with surfing agent Blair Marlin.
Lohan took time to attend a memorial for her late friend, surfing pro Andy Irons. This year's Pipeline Masters is held in memory of Irons, who died earlier this year due to an accidental drug overdose.
The actress' mini-vacation, which TMZ reports was pre-approved by Lohan's probation officer, will hopefully give Lohan some time to recharge away from the La spotlight before her scheduled Dec. 14 probation update, and the hardcopies of her Playboy shoot hit newsstands.
Check out some photos of Lohan in Hawaii below!

Kelly Slater has won a record-setting world surfing crown and he did it at the age of 39, making him the oldest world champion in history (incidentally, he's also the youngest, as his first win came at the age of 20). The title came at the Rip Curl Pro in Ocean Beach, which is in the San Francisco Bay area. Slater had to finish 9th or better to mathematically win the world title and while the Rip Curl Pro is not completed yet, he has secured himself at least a 9th-place finish, securing him the world title for 2011.
The title happened a year to day since Slater, and the surfing world, lost one of Slater's longtime rivals and friends in surfer Andy Irons. Irons was found dead from a mixture of drugs he was taking for insomnia and an illness, in a Texas hotel room Nov. 2, 2010.

Champion surfer Andy Irons died from a cardiac arrest and "acute mixed drug ingestion", according to his long-awaited autopsy and toxicology reports.
The three-times world champion was found dead at a hotel in Dallas, Texas in November, aged 32 - just a month before he was due to become a first-time father.
Irons had been suffering from dengue fever in the lead-up to his shock death and had pulled out of a surfing event in Puerto Rico to battle the viral infection.
The investigation into his death was put off while his widow Lyndie Dupuis gave birth to their son, Andy Axel, and now Irons' family has released a statement revealing he didn't die from dengue fever, but from a cardiac arrest caused by the hardening of his coronary arteries.
There were also traces of several drugs in his blood, including a metabolite which often suggests cocaine use.
Dr. Vincent Di Maio, a forensic pathologist, explains, "A plaque of this severity, located in the anterior descending coronary artery, is commonly associated with sudden death. The only unusual aspect of the case is Mr. Irons' age, 32 years old. Deaths due to coronary atherosclerosis usually begin to appear in the late 40s. Individuals such as Mr. Irons have a genetic predisposition to early development of coronary artery disease. In about 25 per cent of the population, the first symptom of severe coronary atherosclerosis is sudden death."
The official toxicology reports from the Tarrant County Medical Examiner also named a second cause of death as "acute mixed drug ingestion", revealing he had allegedly taken drugs in the hours leading up to his passing.
Di Maio believes most of the substances found in the surfer's system, which included Xanax and Methadone, were at therapeutic levels, while a toxicologist informed the family that levels of Benzoylecgonine, which was also found in his system, were allegedly "consistent with the use of cocaine at about 30 hours prior to his death."...

Three-time world champion surfer Andy Irons was found dead in his Dallas hotel room last November at the young age of 32. The autopsy report has been delayed twice, but was finally released on June 9 to the New York Times. The surfer's sudden death was the result of a heart attack and "acute mixed drug ingestion."
Cocaine, methamphetamine, Xanax, and Ambien were found in Irons' system, and methadone tablets were found in his hotel room.
"Andy was prescribed Xanax and Zolpidem (Ambien) to treat anxiety and occasional insomnia -- a result of a bipolar disorder diagnosed by his family doctor at age 18," the family said in a statement to the New York Times.
"This is when Andy first began experiencing episodes of manic highs and depressive lows. The family believes Andy was in some denial about the severity of his chemical imbalance and tended to blame his mood swings on himself and his own weaknesses,...

In some non horror news, 32-year-old three-time world surfing champion Andy Irons, a Hawaii native lost a battle to complications from dengue fever.
The news of his death shocked and saddened the surfing world and and others, making it clear that certain dangers continue to be posed by a disease that is nearly unheard of in the United States.
What is Dengue Fever?
Symptoms of Dengue Fever include high fevers, rashes, headaches and fatigue. It is rarely deadly and usually goes away on its own after a week. But a related disease, dengue hemorrhagic fever, is very dangerous. Victims can go into a shock-like state and spots of blood appear on and under the skin. Doctors can only treat the symptoms, not the underlying virus. If patients survive the early shock, they typically survive.
From news reports, it is not yet clear what form of dengue fever Irons had or what complications caused his death.
