Roll out the red carpet because Ethan Coen’s upcoming feature, Honey Don’t, is ready to add some of Hollywood’s heaviest hitters to the cast. Coen will reteam with Margaret Qualley for the new project, with Aubrey Plaza, and Chris Evans leading the cast. Details about the plot remain a mystery, but whispers around the watercooler suggest it’s a comedy in the vein of Focus Features‘ Drive-Away Dolls.
Coen teased his follow-up to Drive-Away Dolls in July of last year. Coen directs Honey Don’t! from a script he wrote with his wife, Tricia Cooke. The duo paired off for Drive-Away Dolls, starring Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan. The duo’s Drive-Away Dolls revolves around Jamie, an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian, who desperately needs to loosen up. Spoiler Alert: This story discusses several major plot developments throughout the animated series “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” currently streaming on Netflix.
On a bright day in late October, the creators of the new Netflix anime series “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, sit inside a Los Angeles arcade bar, trying to look relaxed.
“This is going to be a relief,” Grabinski says. But he doesn’t look quite convinced.
On its face, their show is the second adaptation of O’Malley’s beloved “Scott Pilgrim” graphic novel series, about the titular 20-something Canadian, his new American girlfriend, Ramona, and his quest to defeat her seven evil exes to stay with her. The first adaptation, of course, is director Edgar Wright’s 2010 cult movie “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” But even though the entire cast of that film — including Chris Evans, Brie Larson, Jason Schwartzman and Aubrey Plaza — returned to voice their characters,...

This post contains spoilers for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, which is currently streaming on Netflix.
The first episode of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off seems designed to make even the most passionate fans of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s comic books — or the cult classic film Edgar Wright made from them — wonder if perhaps they’ve had their fill of Scott and friends up in Toronto. Much of the premiere, written by O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, is simply recreating scenes familiar from the comics and the movie. The dialogue is tweaked here...

Scott Pilgrim is back, but not in the way anyone expected. The new Netflix animated series “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” is both a continuation of the “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” story and a complete recontextualization of what transpired, twisting and morphing the source material into something completely new. And who better to do it than the author responsible for creating “Scott Pilgrim” in the first place?
The anime “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” is created by Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, and while it begins similarly to “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” a shocking twist at the end of Episode 1 soon takes this story in a different direction.
Edgar Wright, who co-wrote and directed the 2010 film adaptation “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” is involved in this new series as an executive producer and he also helped bring a big piece of the puzzle together: the cast.

Heavy spoilers for "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" to follow.
Doing adaptations of work that have already been adapted into a beloved piece of media is a near-impossible task. How do you stand apart from the version audiences are so familiar with without trying to compete or tamper with that version? How do you do things differently without being unrecognizable? How do you do things similar enough without feeling like a copy?
The best new adaptations are those that reinvent the original material, those that look at what the more popular adaptation skipped or didn't do, and take the chance to explore different aspects of the source material. It's how the "Watchmen" TV show managed to be both a remake, a prequel, and a sequel to the iconic comic. Or how the live-action "One Piece" managed to tell things the anime didn't get to.

"Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" is full of surprises. The new Netflix anime "reboot" of the familiar franchise, which features characters from Bryan Lee O'Malley's comics (O'Malley co-created the show) and voice actors from Edgar Wright's movies, takes a narrative left turn right out of the gate. Instead of winning his fight against Ramona's first evil ex Matthew Patel (Satya Bhabha), Scott (Michael Cera) loses, seemingly dying and staying dead for the majority of the season.
That isn't the only major twist in the increasingly meta series, though. Fans also get a time-traveling older Scott (Will Forte), several unlikely romantic couplings, an arc featuring a filmmaker named Edgar Wrong, and redemption stories for several major villains. In general, "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" seems to take the road less traveled by O'Malley's first version of the story, reimagining its bad...

The following article contains mild spoilers for "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off."
In the new animated Netflix series "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off," Scott (Michael Cera) is kidnapped early on, and things shift quite a bit from the film "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World." I won't spoil the major plot point that explains it all, but things are ... different. That said, the major cast members are back to voice the roles they had in the live-action film. That includes Chris Evans, who played movie star skateboarder/Ramona's Evil Ex number two, Lucas Lee. If you recall, in the film, Lee is on a movie set and skateboards to his doom in a battle with Scott. In the anime, written by Bryan Lee O'Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, Lee is still a successful movie star. This time around, however, we see his mansion in Glendale, California, and in one room, he has a shrine to all his skateboards.

No matter how much the mainstream pop culture scene has progressed in the last few decades or will continue to do so in the future, Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World an adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel of the same name, will forever be the epitome of coolness. It was the makers’ passion and understanding of the source material medium’s visual language, which they were able to translate perfectly into the movie, and a strikingly cool amalgamation of live-action visuals and classic video game aesthetics that made Scott Pilgrim one of the best comic-book adaptations ever, surpassing most of the mega-franchise blockbusters.
Even with the creative quotient expressed so strongly in the live-action version, there was a possibility of moving even beyond that with an animated adaptation of the Scott Pilgrim lore, as it provides a greater scope for maintaining authenticity to the source.

The new Netflix anime "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" gives a whole new twist to the 2010 Edgar Wright movie "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World." (Wright is an executive producer on the anime and is called "Edgar Wrong" in the show.) As it turns out, the movie is part of the universe of the anime, and it doesn't get the story exactly right. "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" is the "real" story of the meeting of Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera). Scott is kidnapped, and the gang has to deal with the evil exes and some wild circumstances -- including a movie being shot about the whole thing -- to get him back.
The story of their meeting, the search for Scott, and their reunion are covered in the eight episodes we've been given this season. However, there...

Is there anyone who doesn’t know Scott Pilgrim, a quirky, adventurous 23-year-old who loves video games and comics more than anything? He never saw himself falling head over heels for someone, but when he did, everything changed. If you’re picturing him going on tranquil dates, drinking coffee from the same cup, and watching movies with chocolate popcorn, you’re dead wrong. He wanted to do these things but had a different matter to deal with first. The girl he fell for had an impressive dating portfolio; she had dated seven men, each more evil than the last. So, in order to woo the girl of his dreams, Scott Pilgrim had to fight this army of exes and survive.

When it was released in 2010, Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was considered a disappointment. It grossed less than $50 million at the box office, on a reported production budget of $85 million. And the reviews, while mostly positive, were less than enthusiastically so.
In hindsight, though, Wright’s adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s beloved 2000s series of graphic novels was simply ahead of its time. Its mash-up of genre and tone, and its ability to make absurd comic book imagery work in live-action, has earned it an ever-increasing cult following.

It’s a battle of the exes like you’ve never seen before in the first full look at Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the new anime series from Netflix.
The two-minute teaser for the show, created for television by executive producers and co-showrunners Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, debuted during New York Comic Con on Saturday. As part of the hour-long panel, O’Malley and Grabinski not only presented the trailer and teased the series, but confirmed that Julian Cihi will voice the Katayanagi Twins (Kyle and Ken).
The trailer takes fans back to Toronto “not too long ago” as Scott asks out Ramona Flowers, the “girl of my dreams.” But in order to date her, Scott must defeat her “seven evil exes.” Electric battles and even more electric guitar riffs set up a new chapter in the Scott Pilgrim saga, which sees the return of the live-action cast as their respective characters.

Hello again.… The Scott Pilgrim universe is expanding. Hollywood reunion content has been milked dry in a major shift toward playing into audience nostalgia. Early in the pandemic, casts reunited over Zoom for table reads. While that happens less now, it’s only been replaced by revivals and years-too-late sequels missing the core of what made the film and television program great to begin with. But as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World returns as an anime series on Netflix, its creators are going all in.

At this point, it looks like Chris Evans has ended his long-running tenure as Captain America. For now, at least. Indeed, there’ve been numerous reports pointing to some kind of comeback down the road, which the actor hasn’t ruled out yet, but for the immediate future, it seems like he’s intending to stay away from the comic book movie genre. And we don’t blame him.
After all, throughout his career, Evans has brought to life over a half a dozen comic book characters across nearly 20 movies. While a good chunk of those are obviously Captain America-related, if you dig deeper, you’ll find that he also has many other parts in films based on comic books, be it Fantastic Four, Tmnt, Push or The Losers.
But if you ask the actor which comic book movie role is his best, he wouldn’t go with any of those.
