Cinematographer Mandy Walker has made history as the first female recipient of the Australian Cinematographers Society (Acs) Milli Award.
Prior to receiving the ceremony’s highest award, Walker became the first woman in 102 years to win the prestigious American Society of Cinematographers’ Best Feature Film Award, and was nominated for both a BAFTA and Academy Award for her work on “Elvis.”
“I’m incredibly proud and honored to be the first woman to win this award,” said Walker. “Here’s to all the other glass ceiling breakers who will come after this.”

To celebrate International Women's Day, Marvel and Disney+ released a new four-part mini-series called "MPower," which highlights the stories, creation, and impact of some of the most empowering figures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The episodes are centered around the women of Wakanda, Captain Marvel and the women she inspires (Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan), Scarlet Witch and the other women of "WandaVision," and the women of Guardians of the Galaxy. The series utilizes scenes from the films and related Disney+ series, archival footage, interviews with the stars and creative team members that helped bring the characters to life, and stunning original animation. The series is not just a celebration of the characters and how they've brought success to the MCU, but also a deeply intimate look at how the actors who play these characters connect with their stories.

Exclusive: Armory Films has come on board to produce Unikorn, a feature adaptation of Don Handfield & Joshua Malkin’s original graphic novel which Armory developed and financed with Handfield and that Scout Comics/Simon & Schuster is publishing in 2021. The film will mark in-demand editor Debbie Berman’s directorial debut. Berman has been the go-to editor for Marvel for the past several years, working on such films as Captain Marvel and Black Panther.
“Unikorn has heart, humor and ultimately leaves you feeling inspired and hopeful, story elements which define some of our favorite films like The Goonies, Et and The Black Stallion, and feelings we are all desperately seeking more now than ever,“ said Armory Films co-founders Chris Lemole & Tim Zajaros. “With Debbie Berman at the helm, this film is destined to be a magical feel-good adventure that will be remembered for decades to come.”

While Captain Marvel continues to dominate the box office, some new details have surfaced regarding the film that involves the way it was originally supposed to end.
The original ending was very different from the one we ended up seeing in the film, but the one we did get works so much better than what they were going to do. If you haven’t seen the movie yet…
The information comes from the film’s editor Debbie Berman, who opened up about the ending of the film in an interview with Et, saying:
“I did actually suggest some tweaks to the ending of this film. It used to end with Carol flying off into space alone, and I found that a bit jarring. Like, where exactly was she going? And what was she doing? It felt like we needed a stronger visual to assert a more specific justification for her...

Spoilers ahead for “Captain Marvel”
“Captain Marvel” editor Debbie Berman said in a new interview that the original ending to “Captain Marvel” didn’t have the same emotional “closure” or “resonance” that the film ultimately did in its final cut.
In an early iteration of “Captain Marvel,” Berman said that the film ended with Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) flying off into space alone. But, she suggested some tweaks to directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, saying that moment didn’t feel quite right.

Captain Marvel editor Debbie Berman says she found the original ending "jarring"...
This article contains Captain Marvel spoilers...
Captain Marvel has now been a huge hit worldwide for Disney and Marvel, and one thing that a lot of people have enjoyed about the new McU instalment is its unexpected Skrull storyline.
In the movie, the villainous race from the comics was replaced by a dwindling group of refugees on the run from both the powerful Kree and ex-pilot Carol Danvers, whose intrinsic humanity ultimately led her to help them escape the clutches of the Kree. Carol (Brie Larson) and the Skrulls, headed up by Ready Player One's big bad Ben Mendelsohn, all flew off together in the last moments of the film to find a new home, where the Skrulls hopefully wouldn't be hunted anymore.

Captain Marvel has been yet another triumph for Marvel Studios.
At $550M and climbing, the 90s-set adventure is well on its way to topping $1 billion – a rare feat for Marvel-owned movies, given only six McU films have been enshrined into the billion-dollar club. The top three are all Avengers films (no surprise there), while Iron Man 3 and Captain America: Civil War currently round out the top six.
That means Black Panther is Marvel’s only non-sequel to gross higher than $1 billion, so as things stand, Captain Marvel is headed towards box office immortality.
And as the post-mortem continues, Marvel Studios editor Debbie Berman has revealed details of the original ending she had planned for Carol Danvers’ solo flight.
I did actually suggest some tweaks to the ending of this film. It used to end with Carol flying off into space alone, and I found that a bit jarring.

Starring Brie Larson as the first female Marvel character to front her own movie, the sci-fi fantasy co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck notched the biggest debut of 2019 and an all-time record for March.
The estimated Us launch of $US153 million ranks as the third biggest in March behind Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and Warner Bros’ Batman v. Superman. The global total of $US455 million was the sixth highest ever and the second best for a superhero film behind Avengers : Infinity War.

Here comes Captain Marvel to the rescue and to set the box office back on track.
The domestic comp to last year has been off by as much as 26% and that’s largely because we’re comparing this year to a Black Panther-fueled winter a year ago. Well, business is about to get better for 2019 as Disney’s Captain Marvel, the first Marvel movie since July’s Ant-Man and the Wasp is hoping to rocket-charge to a $150M start in U.S./Canada and a $350M worldwide opening, which would be higher than DC’s Wonder Woman ($228.3M), Justice League ($278.8M), and Fox/Marvel’s Deadpool 2 ($300.4M), and just under Black Panther‘s Ww first frame of $371.4M. What’s giving further juice to the lofty Captain Marvel stateside forecast is that we’re hearing the pic’s advance ticket sales are beating that of Captain America: Civil War.

Marvel Studios presents “Captain Marvel,” an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that introduces the McU’s first stand-alone, female-franchise title character—Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel.
Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” sidesteps the traditional originstory template, with Carol Danvers already possessing her superhero powers. Leaving her earthly life behind, she joins an intergalactic elite Kree military team called Starforce, led by their enigmatic commander, Yon-Rogg. But after Danvers has trained and worked with the Starforce team, and become a valued member, she finds herself back on Earth with new questions about her past. While on Earth she quickly lands on the radar of Nick Fury, and they must work together against a formidable enemy in the form of the Skrulls—the notorious Marvel bad guys made even more dangerous by their shape-shifting abilities—and their leader, Talos, who is...

Will the highest grossing film of the year “Black Panther” score a Best Picture nomination? It’s a fair question as no Marvel film has ever even been in the conversation. And the question has produced so much turmoil the academy temporarily thought of adding a Best Popular Film category. We should look towards another popular origin story that was not your typical Oscar fare — 1977’s “Star Wars: IV A New Hope” — as our guide towards “Black Panther’s” potential Oscar nomination haul.
George Lucas’s original “Star Wars” spawned a franchise that includes seven prequels and sequels and two spinoffs to date. Luke Skywalker’s origin story maybe outside the Oscars comfort zone but that didn’t stop the film from picking up 10 nominations including Best Picture; Best Director (Lucas); Best Original Screenplay (Lucas); and Best Supporting Actor (Alec Guinness).

Berman and Shawver came to the film from completely different backgrounds. On November 1, the 2018 IndieWire Honors ceremony will celebrate eight filmmakers and actors for their achievement in creative independence. We’re showcasing their work with new interviews and tributes from their peers this week.
When you’ve been around this film industry as long as I have, when you see new voices — new visions — you get so excited. I saw Ryan Coogler’s “Fruitvale Station” when it first came out in 2013. I was interested in seeing this small independent movie produced and shepherded by Forest Whitaker, who has excellent taste, along with the work of a young filmmaker dealing with important historic subject matter. I loved it and thought it was a story well told.
And along comes “Creed,” which was a great indicator of what Ryan would do in the future. Attending the “Creed” premiere was an opportunity to support and meet this young man whose work so impressed me.
