The hoodie has as much to say about it’s wearer as, say, the white t-shirt does. By which I mean that, depending on context, it can say anything. The white t-shirt can imply clean, erotic, the worker – or a combination of all three. In the eyes of contemporary media, the hoodie largely suggests youth. Shady youth, someone not keen to reveal their identity because they are planning on robbing you or worse. Put the hoodie on a black man and it is pretty much akin to walking down the street in a striped jumper with a sack marked ‘swag’. Luke Cage is not set to change that perception, but it does make us reevaluate the role of the hoodie on screen. For the first time in a long time, perhaps ever, a black man in a hoodie in Harlem is not a suspect. In fact he’s a goddamn hero.

Marvel's Luke Cage revisits the superhero's origin story in episode 4. Here are our companion viewing notes for Step In The Arena...
Luke Cage is back! In his own show! And so are our Marvel-Netflix episode notes where we’ll do a bit of commentary and reference-spotting for each episode of the series. Feel free to read along as you watch too, but please don’t spoil future episodes for anyone in the comments!
Pacing-wise it’s a little odd that Luke Cage essentially grinds to a halt for an extended flashback scene while the man himself spends an hour lying underneath some rubble, but at the same time, it’s hard to hate this episode because it’s exactly what the fanboy in me has wanted to see ever since Jessica Jones: the Luke Cage origin episode.
Speaking of Jessica Jones, this episode also harks back to plotlines from that series.

There’s more than meets the eye to Netflix’s timely and thought-provoking Marvel series “Luke Cage,” which recently debuted to much fanfare, critical acclaim and maybe even temporary service outage.
Whether you’re one of the dedicated who have already binged all 13 episodes or are slowly savoring each installment, there’s plenty happening on the screen beyond the main action. Some of it may be obvious, such as when a street hawker in the first episode (selling DVDs of The Incident in “The Avengers”) refers to Tony Stark, “the blonde dude with the hammer, the old dude with the shield, the green monster and I don’t mean Fenway.”

Many of the references may not be so blatant though or of the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it variety. Here’s a breakdown of just some of the fun references made that we caught on the first pass.

Erik Laray Harvey's Willis Stryker, Aka Diamondback, emerged as the villain of the second half of Luke Cage, which debuted on Netflix this past Friday. Marvel has now revealed a new poster for the malicious villain, along with Harvey speaking about his character in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Spoiler Warning Ahead Harvey elaborated on the dynamic between his character and Luke Cage/Carl Lucas; the series put a twist on their animosity by revealing that Stryker was Cage's half brother. "Well, in a sense, this is a game to him," said Harvey. "I think truly deep down, inside, he still loves Carl. That’s the funny thing about family, right? You hate ‘em but you love ‘em. You love ‘em but you hate ‘em. [Laughs] It’s one of those situations. He remembers a loving time they had before they had the mess, so [the thinking] is partly like, 'I really...

(Warning: Please do not read if you haven’t finished watching “Luke Cage” on Netflix) Even after Luke Cage defeated Diamondback in the season finale of his Netflix series, there were a lot of loose ends to tie up. Unfortunately for Luke, most of those loose ends were not tied up in his favor. Mariah Dillard became the latest crook to walk out of the Harlem precinct unscathed, taking charge of Harlem’s Paradise with Shades in the process. What’s more, she informed Seagate Prison officials that Luke Cage was the escaped inmate Carl Lucas, ensuring that he’d be returned to prison (though.

This Friday, Netflix debuts the new show from Marvel, Luke Cage. With that, I wanted to check out the origin of the character. He’d always been someone who fascinated me but his origins were always clouded in a bit of a mystery. He wasn’t exactly a character on the level of Spider-Man that would constantly get the origin story retold.
We can thank the creation of Luke Cage on a little phenomenon called Blaxploitation films. Take a movie like Shaft. It showed Hollywood that one, there was a market for films directed at African American audiences and two, it was one of the first times we had African Americans of any sort starring in films where they were the strong, dominant leads.
One thing I wasn’t aware of was that the character of Luke Cage started off with a different name. He was originally Carl Lucas. Carl...

Our Us chums took a close look at Marvel's Luke Cage trailer looking for bits of Marvel Comics history and clues about the show's future!
After that cool Sdcc teaser, Marvel's Luke Cage Netflix series finally unveiled a full length trailer to give everyone a better idea of what's in store when it arrives in September.
Here it is in case you haven't seen it yet:
Video of Luke Cage - Main Trailer - Only on Netflix September 30 [HD]
Please note, that I'm not going in order or frame by frame to describe stuff that you're seeing. This is mostly in any order that makes sense to me.
Also, the song that plays over roughly the first half of this trailer is "Walk on By" from Isaac Hayes' Hot Buttered Soul album. There is honestly not a better album you could spend the rest of your day listening to.

Relative to the grand Marvel Cinematic Universe, Netflix’s critically-acclaimed Daredevil series can be likened to Jan Faverau’s first Iron Man film in that it helped map out the skeleton of a budding, interconnected masterplan – perhaps even more so, given the confidence that now exudes from every corner of the studio. Now that Hell’s Kitchen has been established on the small-screen and is primed to return for season 2, that blueprint is beginning to unfold, and the next major milemarker on Marvel’s TV slate is Netflix’s second superhero pillar, Jessica Jones.
Production is well underway on the show’s New York set, and now the online giant has debuted the first images for the sophomore Defenders series, featuring Krysten Ritter as the titular private eye, Mike Colter’s Luke Cage, former Doctor Who star David Tennant and Carrie-Anne Moss.

While we will be seeing both Daredevil and A.K.A. Jessica Jones on our screens this year, via Marvel and Netflix, at least one of their colleagues in the planned connected Defenders shows won’t be joining them just yet. Marvel has announced that Luke Cage will premiere next year and that Cheo Hodari Coker will be the man in charge of the series. Mike Colter is already cast as Cage, and while his series won’t be on screen until 2016, the character will make appearances in A.K.A. Jessica Jones, as the pair in the comics has a deep connection. After an early life of crime and danger on the streets, Cage (born Carl Lucas) ends up in prison when one of his friends betrays him. Recruited for an experiment, he’s injected with a cell regeneration chemical taken from the super soldier serum. A crooked guard tampers with the machinery injecting him,...

Intro Luke Cage is easily one of the coolest characters that Marvel has. He was one of the guys to pave the way for black heroes. Taking all of that and adding it into the equation, I feel like Marvel should go all out with any project that he is attached to. That means TV shows, Movies, animated series, they need to take the ‘Creativity Locks’ off. That’s why I feel like his Netflix show should be a melting pot of awesome. About Luke Cage Luke Cage (also known as ‘Power Man’) was created in 1972. His biography goes as follows: Imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, in exchange for a reduced sentence, Carl Lucas volunteered for a clandestine prison experiment designed to replicate the super soldier serum used to create Captain America. A streetwise youth, the man called "Lucas" was sent to prison for a crime he did not commit.

It may only be 30 seconds long, but what a glorious 30 seconds it is. This past Sunday, Marvel fans were graced with the release of the first promotional video for Joss Whedon's upcoming "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." series. While the promo may not have given us much new information about the show, it does shed some light on the mysterious role that Whedon alumni J. August Richards will be playing.
Prominently featured in two quick scenes, J. August Richards can been seen landing on the ground level of a large building (creating a huge crater upon impact) and effortlessly slamming an unknown assailant to the floor. Clearly, Richards' character has some sort of superhuman strength. But without any sort of recognizable costume to go off of, we still have no idea as to who he's actually portraying on the series!

Death Race 3: Inferno
Stars: Luke Goss, Danny Trejo, Ving Rhames, Dougray Scott, Tanit Phoenix, Fred Koehler, Robin Shou | Written by Tony Giglio | Directed by Roel Reine
Universal have made quite a stock in trade of taking some of their fan-favourite franchises and cranking out straight to DVD sequels: Darkman, Tremors, The Scorpion King, American Pie hell – even the The Land Before Time series! One of their best current straight to DVD franchises is Death Race… Now in it’s third incarnation, the series is, in this reviewers humble opinion, actually one of the best low-budget action franchises around and despite any misgivings you may have, this third film keeps up the quality.
A sequel to the prequel, helmed once again by Dutch director Roel Reine – who directed the previous film in the franchise; and who seems to be specialising in directing Dtv sequels having lensed The Marine 2, Death Race 2...

For a straight to DVD franchise, the Death Race series is shaping up to be something quite impressive.
The second movie, wittily entitled Death Race 2 was actually a far better movie than the Paul Ws Anderson remake of the 1975 Roger Corman produced Paul Bartel directed original that came before it. The trick was it told a compelling story with a beginning, middle and ending and shot the action scenes with style without feeling like the camera was on a bungee rope whilst having an epileptic fit. Pwsa may be able to frame a nice visual but his genre narratives always seem to lack a satisfactory final act and embrace style often mistaking it for substance.
With Death Race 2, Luke Goss’s main character of a getaway driver who becomes a convict/superstar had a definite arc which paid off nicely come the ending. The second film’s director...

Who would've thought that Roger Corman's 1975 cult classic indie pic 'Death Race 2000' starring a still fairly unknown Sylvester Stallone would one day spawn not only a remake, but a franchise?! Well, low and behold, we're now up to Part 3 in the series as 'Death Race: Inferno' hits Blu-Ray and DVD on January 22nd. The good news? Paul W.S. Anderson, the helmer behind the remake is not back for this entry. Instead it's director Roel Reiné who directed the previous installment 'Death Race 2'. And if you're ready for this new movie in the series, well then hopefully these 5 clips will get you pumped for the release. Check 'em out below along with the synopsis after the film clips.

Like racing to the death? Like clips? Then you’re in luck, buckaroo, because here are five clips from the direct-to-dvd action sequel “Death Race 3: Inferno”. Yes, it’s basically more of the same, but if you’re a fan of that, I guess that won’t be much of an issue, will it? Roel Reine, who directed the last sequel, returns to take the reins once again for “Inferno”. If I’m correct, this is a direct sequel to the last movie, but still a prequel to the first big-budget movie with Jason Statham. Probably. Does it really matter? Look, fast cars shooting at each other! Repentant convict Carl Lucas (Luke Goss) — aka Frankenstein— is a legendary driver in the brutal prison blood sport known as Death Race. When it was first announced that Joss Whedon would be making a Marvel TV series, the Internet was a flutter with the possibilities. With ideas ranging everywhere from "Heroes For Hire" to "The Runaways," it was eventually announced that the series would be based around the shadowy organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D., which was a bit of a let down for those hoping for a "Heroes For Hire" series.
In "Heroes For Hire," Luke Cage and Iron Fist (whom we've already discussed in Assembling Avengers) dish out their own unique brand of street justice as a means of making a profit. Currently, Luke Cage is actually a highly respected figure within the Marvel universe, gaining leadership of the New Avengers after the death of Captain America.
So what are the chances that Cage will be making an appearance in the "Avengers" sequel? Click past the jump to find out!

Who in their right mind wants another installment in the “Death Race” series, you ask? Me, for one, and apparently a few other people, as well. There has to be a demand for these flicks, otherwise Paul W.S. Anderson and company wouldn’t keep farting these things out, right? For better or for worse, Roel Reiné, also known as king of the straight-to-dvd sequel, is preparing to unleash “Death Race: Inferno” upon the masses. Luke Goss is back in the saddle as Carl Lucas, otherwise known as Frankenstein. From the looks of the trailer, this follow-up appears to be more of the same. From where I’m seated, that’s certainly good news. You know you want to have a look at this synopsis: In this installment, convicted cop-killer Carl Lucas, aka Frankenstein, is a superstar driver in the brutal prison yard demolition derby known as Death Race. Back in 2008, director Paul Ws Anderson (Resident Evil, Avp) decided to remake Sylvester Stallone's 1975 film "Death Race 2000." Say what you want, but this writer is a huge fan of Paul W.S. Anderson's Death Race franchise. With a surprisingly strong sequel/prequel released earlier this year and with production on Death Race: Inferno recently under way in South Africa, we checked in with Anderson (who helmed the first remake and has stayed on board the franchise ever since) during our recent Resident Evil: Retribution set visit to get his thoughts on this third installment and what the current status on the sequel is.
Anderson said of his involvement with the growing franchise, "I write the storylines still for each of the movies, and then Tony (Giglio) puts it together. Jeremy (Bolt) and I come on to produce each of the movies, but we're not sitting on set necessarily worrying about all the nuts and bolts. Though the end of the first Death Race movie painted a happily-ever-after picture, it is clear Universal Home Entertainment isn't content with just one prequel movie (Death Race 2). A third Race has been announced, set in Cape Town, South Africa. The premise is essentially the same – hardened criminals race for their freedom in new vehicles. Frankenstein, the greatest Death Racer of them all, is back. Luke Goss reprises the role, this time taking the wheel to save his pit crew, comprised of Death Race 2 stars Danny Trejo, Frank Koehler and Joe Vaz. Ving Rhames also returns to antagonize Frankenstein. Universal Home Entertainment have released info and the first synopsis for the sequel to 2010 movie, Death Race 2 (which in turn was the sequel to the bigger budget movie, Death Race which starred Jason Statham). This movie comes from Universal 1440 Entertainment and will see Luke Goss reprising his role as Frankenstein alongside Danny Trejo, Ving Rhames, Robin Shou, Fred Koelher, Dougray Scott and Hlubi Mboya so although it’s a Home Entertainment release, it has a pretty substantial and well-known cast.

Danny Trejo ('Machete') and uber hottie Tanit Phoenix are both set to return for more high speed thrills and brutal violence in 'Death Race 3'. The newly announced sequel will see the action move to the Mexican desert. Ex model turned actress Phoenix (below) will return as Katrina Banks who was Carl Lucas' (played by Luke Goss) sexy female race partner in last year's direct to disc follow-up 'Death Race 2'. Word is that a number of other names may also return. Our monies of seeing actor Fred Koehler back in the fray once more as Lists!..

A short teaser video has appeared online featuring the Old Spice spokesman as Marvel's Power Man, a role he has been petitioning Marvel Studios for. A streetwise youth, the man called Carl Lucas was sent to prison for a crime he did not commit. In exchange for parole, Lucas clandestinely underwent an experimental procedure, originally intended to generate immunity to all illness; instead, it inadvertently granted him steel-hard skin and heavier, enhanced muscle. After escaping Seagate Prison, he forged the identity of "Luke Cage" becoming a hero for hire -- a sort of super-enhanced private detective -- although Cage commonly refused money, or simply received none, for cases. Later, he formed a business partnership with the martial arts hero Danny Rand, known as Iron Fist. Several months...

00:00:00: Death Race 2, also known as Death Race: Frankenstein Lives, is the direct to DVD prequel to 2008's Death Race, which was allegedly a prequel to 1975's Death Race 2000. It's not a video game movie, but it damn well should be. Death Race 2 gives us the backstory on the character Frankenstein, the mysterious metal-faced driver who died in the first scenes of Death Race. I don't want to type the word Death Race anymore. Our Blockbuster gift card was sacrificed to the lone rental store still located in Burbank. I pulled and pulled on the handle, wondering why the hell the store was closed at 9 Pm on a Tuesday. That's when the employee gestured that it was a Push door. I had finally entered the proper level of mental mediocracy to appreciate this fine piece of cinematic entertainment. On Unrated Blu-ray no less.

The Film:
Let’s race.
I doubt if in 1975 that Roger Corman knew he would have a franchise on his hands. While technically Death Race is not really on his hands anymore, it’s a franchise now, thanks to Death Race 2 and all because of Frankenstein. The original Death Race 2000 featured Sly Stallone and David Carradine (as Frankenstein) in what would become a cult hit, and throughout the years would seemingly be ready for remake land with today’s effects and budgets, and that’s exactly what Paul W.S. Anderson did in 2008. Now, much like the corporate greed depicted in the films, a calling for a new film from Universal Studios – a prequel to the remake which was meant to be a homage/prequel in itself (you get this?) – comes with engines roaring.
Luckily for Frankenstein and on-lookers, Death Race 2 doesn’t crash and burn, but instead...

Death Race 2 (Unrated) Quick Thoughts:
Death Race 2 is a prequel to Paul W.S. Anderson's 2008 remake starring Jason Statham and Tyrese. For those that have seen that movie, it's the story of the birth of the "Frankenstein" character, but whether you've seen the original or not does not matter. This isn't high art here folks even though director Roel Reine would like you to believe it is.
The story is hardly large enough to fill the 101-minute running time (99 minutes if you for some reason decide to watch the R-rated version) as it follows the story of Carl Lucas (Luke Goss) after he kills a cop in a bank robbery gone bad and finds himself on Terminal Island, a corporate-owned penitentiary where they are currently using the racial tension between inmates in televised battles called Death Match. In Death Match you need to either kill your opponent or...

It’s no secret I love action flicks and any project featuring Jason Statham is like catnip for me, which is why I loved the balls-out Paul W.S. Anderson remake Death Race when it hit theaters in 2008. And even though many love to hate on it because it was a remake of a cult classic, there's no denying that there was something pretty badass about Statham’s character, Frankenstein.
Universal Pictures must have agreed as they put together one of the best direct-to-dvd action films I’ve ever experienced with Death Race 2, which hits DVD and Blu-ray shelves this week.
