If you're also lamenting how quickly the month seems to be drawing to a close soon, then you're definitely not alone. We tell ourselves we're going to sift through our watchlists for real this time, and yet hardly scratch the surface. There's just way too much cool stuff to watch, and Netflix's model all but ensures you'll never catch up, especially with some of the streamer's own Originals starting to vanish somewhere into the streaming void (for now).
There appears to be a silver lining to December 2022, however, as there aren't a significant amount of titles on the chopping block for that period. With that said, there are still some great films among the bunch that you really ought to check out on Netflix between now and the end of the year, before they're shipped off to yet another service. From high-octane spy thrillers to Kubrick masterpieces, here are...

As cinemas continue to struggle due to Covid-19, Netflix has become the main way for many people to watch movies this year. This has been a big win for smaller titles, in particular, as social media impact and word-of-mouth is leading to some of these projects getting a lot more exposure than they normally would have, and the latest buzzy pic is David Marmor’s awesome horror movie 1Br.
For those unfamiliar, the film follows a young woman named Sarah who moves into a Los Angeles apartment complex, only to find that the residents living there aren’t quite what they appear to be. As the plot synopsis outlines:
Unable to sleep, tormented by strange noises and threatening notes, her new life quickly starts to unravel. By the time she learns the horrifying truth, it’s too late. Caught in a waking nightmare, Sarah must find the strength to hold onto her crumbling sanity…...

With theaters still struggling due to Covid-19, Netflix has become the main way people are watching movies in 2020. It’s a development that has created big opportunities for smaller titles as social media impact and word-of-mouth allows excellent indies to rise to the top of the pile, and this week’s major benefactor of this is David Marmor’s awesome 1Br.
The plot concerns a young woman who moves into a Los Angeles apartment complex, only to discover that the residents aren’t quite what they appear to be. The summary lays out the film’s psychological thrills as so:
Unable to sleep, tormented by strange noises and threatening notes, her new life quickly starts to unravel. By the time she learns the horrifying truth, it’s too late. Caught in a waking nightmare, Sarah must find the strength to hold onto her crumbling sanity… or be trapped forever in an existential hell.

It’s been a typically busy week for Netflix, both in terms of new additions and a selection of surprising movies that have been dominating the streamer’s most-watched charts. The service has just added three new titles today as well, namely horror film 1Br, season 4 of Disney’s Bunk‘d, and the Adrien Brody and Salma Hayek-starring Septembers of Shiraz. So, are any of these worth checking out?
Directed by David Marmor, 1Br sees lead character Sarah (Nicole Brydon Bloom) find an apartment in Hollywood that appears to be too good to be true. As is probably to be expected, Sarah soon begins to experience strange goings on, unusual neighbors and threats to her sanity that suggest a wider conspiracy. Critics have been generally positive on the picture, including praise for its unconventional timeline and handling of cult forces, and it currently has a solid 87% on Rotten Tomatoes.

A dream apartment complex?
In part one of my interview with David Marmor about Apartment 1Br, we discussed the various disasters that beset the production along the way, the fortuitous casting of Nicole Brydon Bloom, and the importance of creating a setting that would leave no room for simple physical solutions, so that viewers would fully appreciate the need for the film’s heroine to escape her situation psychologically. In part two, I began by asking David how he found the location where the film is set, which contributes a huge amount to its character.

Nicole Brydon Bloom in Apartment 1Br
It’s one of those small, perfectly formed offbeat stories that we don’t see much of it genre cinema anymore, and it came from small beginnings. Few people had heard a whisper about David Marmor’s 1Br before it opened at Fantasia in 2019, but it soon became one of the most talked-about titles of the festival. It follows Sarah (Nicole Brydon Bloom), a young woman looking for her first apartment in Los Angeles, who stumbles upon a community that has very particular ideas about how she should live her life. On the eve of it getting a UK online release (as Apartment 1Br), I asked director David Marmor if he had ever anticipated the excited reactions it has received.

Cult Gestalt: Marmor Explores Urban Horrors in Efficient Debut
There’s apparently more than one way to define rent control, at least as suggested by David Marmor’s effective and efficient debut, a likeable low-budget horror film 1Br. A notch above the usual American indie horror offerings, Marmor’s narrative is certainly predictable but efficient use of limited locations and calculated performances recalls a variety of arthouse horror icons, particularly Polanski’s celebrated Apartment trilogy (Repulsion; Rosemary’s Baby; The Tenant), at least in its basic themes. A likeable Nicole Brydon Bloom presents a likeable lead performance, which is perhaps assisted by some of the staged ambiguities about her commitment to a new ‘community.’…...

As individual states and the film industry at large begin to think about when the right time to reopen theaters might be, digital and streaming services deliver the strongest weekly slate of new releases since the shutdown.
Many saw it as a sign of the times when HBO acquired critically acclaimed Hugh Jackman drama ”Bad Education” at the Toronto Film Festival last year, never imagining that it would be a blessing for the film that it was bypassing theaters to debut on the premium network. Meanwhile, on Netflix, two new tentpoles — including one from the team behind “Avengers: Infinity War” — give subscribers some studio-caliber entertainment to watch at home.

What at first seems like an idyllic Los Angeles apartment becomes a hellish prison for a young woman in the new horror film 1Br. The feature-length debut of writer/director David Marmor, 1Br is out now on digital platforms from Dark Sky Films, and we caught up with Marmor in our latest Q&a feature to discuss the film's timely themes of isolation and longing for community, working with Nicole Brydon Bloom and Naomi Grossman, and what he learned from directing his first feature.

Unable to sleep, tormented by strange noises and threatening notes, her new life quickly starts to unravel. Caught in a waking nightmare, Sarah must find the strength to hold onto her crumbling sanity or be trapped forever in an existential hell.

"We all, kind of, take care of each other here." Dark Sky Films has unveiled the official trailer for an indie horror film titled 1Br, a reference to "one bedroom" listings for apartments. This premiered at numerous genre festivals last year, including at Fantasia, Beyond Fest, Monsterfest Melbourne, and also the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival. Nicole Brydon Bloom plays Sarah, a young woman trying to escape her painful past who decides to start anew in La, but her neighbors are not what they seem. Also starring Giles Matthey, Taylor Nichols, Alan Blumenfeld, Celeste Sully, Susan Davis, Clayton Hoff, with Earnestine Phillips. This definitely looks creepy as hell, with some big twists hinted at in this trailer. Tread carefully. A Malevolent Films production, the film took its script from the director's personal experience living in Los Angeles. The film deals with cults and may even take its influences from Scientology. Focusing on the character Sarah (Nicole Brydon Bloom), 1Br offers a few twists and turns as the film switches genres early in Act I. 1Br is definitely one to head out to. The film focuses centrally on Sarah. She has just moved to Los Angeles, leaving behind a troubling family conflict. In Los Angeles, she sets herself up in a residence, where everyone is a bit too happy. After settling in, the torture begins as Sarah is initiated into a modern cult; she is unable to escape on her own. Accepting her situation,...

David Marmor’s feature directorial debut, 1Br, also made a splash preying on the fears of communal living and the premise of people not being quite what they seem. The performance by newcomer Sarah Brydon Bloom was highly effective, also adding to the terrifying tale was the tingling score by composer Ronen Landa. The common nostalgia for an idealized simpler time in which tight-knit communities satisfied all personal needs can be warped to serve fascist ideologies, a notion that is not at all lost on “1Br.” In this thriller, a needy, insecure young woman thinks she’s lucked out in being accepted to an apartment complex where everyone is very, very neighborly. But she gradually learns this little utopia is in fact more of a prison — one with a brutal assimilation process, and where a sense of belonging comes at the cost of absolute conformity, or else.
Writer-director David Marmor’s first feature doesn’t make much of this concept’s potential as a timely political metaphor, nor does he maximize his opportunities in such other departments as suspense, character involvement and cinematic style. Still, the premise remains intriguing enough to make “1Br” a qualified success, albeit one whose ideas sometimes cry for...
