Olivier Bibas is to join the French pay TV giant Canal Plus as head of its fiction label Création Originale. As such, Bibas will be responsible for Canal Plus’ French drama and international co-productions. He starts on Feb. 14.
Bibas will report to Gérald-Brice Viret, managing director, French TV Channels and Programs at Canal Plus Group, who said Bibas’ “vision, recognized expertise and talent will be invaluable in proposing new major series with worldwide appeal.”
Fabrice de la Patellière, who has held the position of head of drama at Canal Plus since 2002, will now move into production and partner with Studiocanal, under the direction of Anna Marsh, to develop ambitious French and international series, for both television and platforms.
In a statement, Canal Plus said it would like to thank De la Patellière for “his tremendous contribution to the numerous successes” of Création Originale, which he launched over 15 years ago with Arielle Saracco.

In a pioneering alliance, Starzplay is partnering with Studiocanal, Europe’s leading film-tv production-distribution-sales company, on Starzplay’s first French co-production, the series “All Those Things We Never Said.”
Adapting the bestselling novel of the same title by Marc Levy, France’s most-read living author, the comedy-drama series is commissioned by Starzplay and Studiocanal parent, Vivendi’s Canal Plus Group — Europe’s second-biggest pay TV/SVOD operator.
Written by Levy, who will also showrun, the 10-part half-hour series has just initiated principal photography, starring Jean Reno and Alexandra Maria Lara. Studiocanal will handle international sales outside Starzplay and Cpg’s extensive distribution footprints.
Levy’s original novel was published in 2008. Described by Studiocanal, Starzplay and Cpg as “a bittersweet comedy with soul” and “wryly fun,” it taps into human relations — a reconnection with a father and a lost first love; a second chance at life — which carries new meaning as...

By unveiling a new set of dates in early July, the Cannes Film Festival has brought much-needed hope and a sunny perspective for Zoom-fatigued industry players.
If the health situation allows, Cannes could be the first international film festival and market to take place in person in 2021. After a year of virtual meetings, the prospect of rejoicing on the Croisette, seeing familiar faces we’ve missed, and celebrating great filmmaking sounds almost too good to be true. But people across the board — cynics included — believe Cannes has a real shot at going ahead in July. Even if the pandemic is not completely over by then, the second wave will likely be behind us thanks to lockdown measures and vaccines.
“The sun will shine again in July and we believe it will be a real Festival de Cannes as we’re used to. This news has given us and our buyers a very positive feeling,...

France’s exhibitors and distributors are aiming for a quick restart when theaters are allowed to reopen, whenever that may be.
During the first lockdown, which lasted nearly three months, many French distributors took the streaming route, opting to release their films on transactional VOD services and in some cases, sell rights to SVOD platforms such as Amazon or Netflix. But this time around, key distributors like Gaumont, Studiocanal and Le Pacte, who had movies playing when theaters shut down on Oct. 29, told Variety that they’re planning to re-release their pics when cinemas reopen, even if a date is still unknown.
Among the films that will return to theaters are Gaumont’s “Bye Bye Morons,” a black comedy directed by Albert Dupontel; Le Pacte’s “DNA,” directed by Maiwenn; Studiocanal’s “Little Vampire,” an animated feature by Joann Sfar; and comedy “30 Jours Max” from Tarek Boudali.

The global Covid-19 lockdown may have struck down this year’s international box office, but it has led to new opportunities for classic movie catalogues and, of course, streamers, according to film distribution execs taking part in a Cannes virtual market conference on Wednesday.
While cinemas in mainland China remain shuttered for the foreseeable future, they have stayed open in Taiwan, where the pandemic has been much less severe, and reopened in Hong Kong, where they had been closed for some six weeks.
Commenting on the Taiwanese box office, Jeffrey Chan, exec VP of China’s Bona Film Group said the lack of major international titles had created opportunities for older and beloved classic films.
A restored edition of Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1987 classic “The Last Emperor” has been the highest grossing film in the past four weeks in Taiwan, Chan noted, adding that the film had at once been the...

Anna Marsh, the newly appointed CEO of leading European film and TV group Studiocanal, comes off as self-contained and mild-mannered, but her bullish track record at the company and relationships with big-name producers such as David Heyman (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) and Andrew Rona (“Non-Stop”) suggests she has an iron fist in that velvet glove.

When it came time to remake “Cliffhanger,” a 1993 climbing thriller that featured Sylvester Stallone at the height of his action hero fame, producers hit on a novel concept. And not only have the “Cliffhanger” producers committed to casting an A-list actress in the lead role, they’re bringing on a female director, Ana Lily Amirpour (“A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night”), to direct the high-octane project.

Cannes — Produced by Cottonwood Media and Studiocanal, written by “Ice Age 2’s” Gerry Swallow, and directed by Academy Award nominated Samuel Tourneux (“Only Pidgeons Go To Heaven”), $25 million animated feature “Around the World” had sparked offers from “from all over the world” by Wednesday evening at Cannes, said Anne Cherel, Studiocanal head of international current movies sales.
Weighing offers, Studiocanal looks to close 70%-80% of major territories by the end of the market, she added.
That looks set to make “Around the World” one of this year’s Cannes Film Market hits.
Studiocanal will distribute “Around the World” directly in France. It will also release the film, based on Jules Vernes’ timeless literary classic, in its direct distribution territories of Germany, the U.K. and Australia/New Zealand, unless it receives offers for the territories which it can’t refuse, Cherel said.

Studiocanal has sold near all of the world outside the U.S. on Hugo Gélin’s “Love at Second Sight.” The European production-distribution-sales giant, part of Vivendi’s Canal Plus Group, has also kicked off promising sales on a panoply of new foreign-language titles, such as Yvan Attal’s “My Dog Stupid,” Cedric Klapisch’s “Someone Somewhere” and animated feature “Samsam.”
“Our mission at Studiocanal is to ensure we make high-quality European cinema with strong global potential,” said Anna Marsh, Studiocanal Evp, international distribution.
Described by Marsh as a “key title, a high concept movie which really appeals.” “Love at Second Sight” stars François Civil as a young best-selling novelist who forgets the love of his life in one world to wake up in another where she’s a world-famous pianist who’s never met him.

After a vibrant Sundance, driven by Amazon Studios’ $47 million spending spree, can Berlin sales prove as buoyant? While there are some intriguing titles, indies have to contend with, among many factors, very active buyers from deep-pocketed streamers and a volatile theatrical box office in many territories.
Certainly there are star-studded titles. FilmNation will sell Hugh Jackman starrer “Reminiscence,” a sci-fi romance thriller from “Westworld” creator Lisa Joy. Aaron Sorkin directs “The Trial of the Chicago 7” that sports a starry cast including Seth Rogen and Eddie Redmayne. Rocket Science is handling sales.
In other high-profile offerings, Agc Studios is shopping sci-fi thriller “Voyagers” from Neil Burger (“Divergent”).
Mel Gibson and Tye Sheridan star in Imr Intl.’s thriller “Black Flies,” which screens a promo of Guy Ritchie’s crime actioner “Bush,” with Matthew McConaughey.
