Leonis Productions, the Newen Studios-owned French banner created by Jean-Benoit Gillig, is developing a raft of international shows on the heels of “Liaison,” Apple TV+’s first French original.
The company reached a milestone with “Liaison,” a thriller series created and entirely penned by Virginie Brac (“Spiral”) and directed by Stephen Hopkins. Vincent Cassel and Eva Green lead a cast that includes Peter Mullan, Gérard Lanvin, Daniel Francis, Stanislas Merhar, Irène Jacob, Laëtitia Eïdo, Eriq Ebouaney, Tchéky Karyo, Bukky Bakray and Thierry Fremont.
“It’s a sprawling French-British thriller set against the backdrop of Brexit, and there’s a metaphor between the love tragedy playing as the primary plot and the political tragedy embodied by Brexit unfolding in the background,” said Gillig.
“The starting point of this series was our wish to create a series using Brexit as a canvas, and from there Virginie Brac was able to conceive a...

Newen Studios has pushed into the Scandinavian scripted market with the acquisition of a majority stake in Nordic film and TV company Anagram.
The news was unveiled earlier today at a press conference for the TF1-owned giant, which was led by recently-promoted Newen Studios CEO Romain Bessi.
Bessi said Newen has taken a “very meaningful shareholding,” accounting for “well over 50” of the company, which was founded in 2002 by comedians Anders Jansson and Johan Wester and is comprised of Anagram Sweden, Anagram Norway and Anagram Live.
Anagram makes film, TV and theater, most recently producing the likes of Svt’s Thin Blue Line and feature My Life as a Comedian, which premiered at TIFF. Within TV, it produces drama, comedy and entertainment.
Bessi was joined on stage by Anagram’s Mats Alders and Miira Paasilinna to briefly discuss the acquisition – its second scripted in Scandinavia after Nimbus – during a lengthy press conference.

Lille, France — France’s Leonis and the U.K.’s Artists Studio, owned by Endemol Shine, are re-teaming with Virginie Brac, one of France’s most celebrated screenwriters, on the development of a new miniseries “Faceless,” described by Endemol Shine as “a smart, tense, disruptive thriller which dynamites Anglo-French entente cordiale.”
Leonis’ Jean-Benoît Gillig, Artists Studio’s Gub Neal and Justin Thomson at DoveTale, which will also develop “Faceless,” made the announcement at France’s Series Mania. The co-development deal follows on Leonis, Artists Studio and Brac’s first collaboration, “Insoupconnable,” a series which world premiered last weekend at Series Mania.
Described by Endemol Shine as a “provocative new show,” and scripted by Brac and Oliver Butcher, “Faceless” “blows open the cracks at the heart of the European project,” taking audiences on a “wild ride through the corridors of power on both sides of the Channel,” Endemol Shine continued. The...
