Exclusive: In a competitive situation, Topic Studios has secured the rights to Amanda Montell’s book Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism for adaptation as a television docuseries.
Published by Harper Wave in June of 2021, Montell’s second book, following Wordslut, dissects how cultish groups from Jonestown and Scientology to SoulCycle and social media gurus use language as the ultimate form of power.

According to Montell, whose own father escaped from a cult as a teenager, “we’ve been thinking about cults in completely the wrong way. While there have long been dark, dangerous cults (such as the Manson Family), fanatical groups actually fall along a spectrum, from Heaven’s Gate all the way to SoulCycle and Taylor Swift stans. What Does Empathy Looks Like on the Big Screen?
If, as Roger Ebert has said, movies are a giant machine that generates empathy, what does it look like on the big screen and how do you encourage it in emerging writers and filmmakers? What implications would this have for the filmmaking industry amid a sea change in production deals and distribution? How does it affect the critical writing about films? What influences will it have for society as a whole? And is it tilting at windmills or who has done it successfully?

Maris Curran’s directorial debut might be a longshot for Sundance….at least for the 2015 edition. The drama which has its character set wrestle with isolation, grief and loss went into production late summer in the titular north-eastern state with a cast comprised of Dianne Wiest, Rosie Perez and career-year actor David Oyelowo toplining with a supporting players in the shape of Teyonah Parris, Stephen Henderson and Hani Furstenberg (seek her out in Julia Loktev’s The Loneliest Planet). Five Nights in Maine has found early supporters from the likes of San Francisco Film Society/Kenneth Rainin Foundation Filmmaking Grant, Cinereach and found some tender loving care from Kickstarter back in 2011. If the project is sprinter speed force in the post-production phase then we might not have to wait until 2016.

A project whose Kickstarter campaign we featured on this site in 2011, looks to be getting back on track, but with what looks like a fresh team behind the camera, as well as a new cast. When we first mentioned it 3 years ago, producer Nekisa Cooper (Pariah) and cinematographer Bradford Young (Mississippi Damned, Restless City, Mother Of George, Middle of Nowhere) were both attached to the project, written and to be directed by Maris Curran. Curran is still the writer and director of the film - titled Five Nights in Maine - but Carly Hugo and Matt Parker are now listed as producers, alongside Curran and David Oyelowo’s Yoruba Saxon...

#5. Interior. Leather Bar
Who: While everyone may be familiar with actor/director James Franco, they not be as aware of the filmmaker he’s paired with to direct Interior. Leather Bar, Travis Mathews. With a background in documentary, Mathews professes to use this and his Masters in Counseling Psychology to make films that focus on gay men and intimacy. He already has a series of short films about gay men and bedrooms and a well received 2012 feature film, I Want Your Love to his name.
What: His pairing with Franco on a project aims to recreate the lost 40 minutes of footage that William Friedkin was forced to cut from his controversial 1980 film Cruising.
Where: Franco’s interview also features a clip, while Franco’s co-director posted the trailer on his vimeo channel.
When: Shot in Los Angeles, CA over the course of a day in July, 2012, produced by RabbitBandini Productions...

Mother of George
Director: Andrew Dosunmu
Writer(s): Darci Picoult

U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Isaach De Bankolé, Danai Gurira, Tony Okungbowa, Yaya Alafia, Bukky Ajayi
I considered myself a fan of Andrew Dosunmu’s work precisely about ten minutes into his debut feature, Restless City. Workshopped at the 2005 Directors and Screenwriters Labs, it’s been a long time coming for what is his sophomore feature, Mother of George. Examining the interconnectedness between family and home both past and present, I’m thinking that his second collaboration with cinematographer Bradford Young might offer a better visual and narrative balance and a rich tapestry highlighting the immigrant experience. Auteur cinema’s Isaach De Bankolé toplines alongside Danai Gurira.

With all the support Andrew Dosunmu’s Ma’ George received from the Sundance Institute, I think it’s time for the delivery. Known in the labs/formerly titled as “Mother of George,” this 2005 Directors Lab, 2005 January Screenwriters Lab, 2006 Annenberg Film Fellowship Grant and more recently, 2012 Cinereach Project at Sundance Institute Grant recipient technically would have been Dosunmu’s feature fiction debut project, but Restless City (Sundance ’11) came to fruition and ended up being a bijou in the Next section at the fest, and after showcasing that film last year (including the AFI Fest – where we sat down with the helmer), financing and a cast (including Isaach De Bankolé) firmly in place meant that production began and is now firmly in post-production phase. Dosunmu’s savvy Restless City cinematographer Bradford Young once again helps with the cityscape lensing with the Red, and Danai Gurira (Restless City) and drop dead gorgeous Yaya DaCosta...

Everett Vera Farmiga in “Higher Ground”
Actress Vera Farmiga, known for her roles in big films like “Up in the Air,” for which she got a best-supporting actress Oscar nomination, has emerged as a vocal critic of Hollywood’s failure to create sufficiently complicated roles for women. Drama that shared a title of a popular Stevie Wonder song signifies the search for one’s spiritual nature, for God, and for where one belongs. Farmiga as well plays a woman named Corrine Miller who struggles with doubts about her marriage with Ethan (Joshua Leonard), their small community of fundamentalist Christians, its views about God, and her role as mother of three small children. At one point she eventually leaves them all to find herself. Farmiga also co-wrote the script with Carolyn S. Briggs inspired by her memoir This Dark World.
In exclusive interview with Fandango the Academy Award-nominated actress revealed she was encouraged to direct Higher Ground by her husband and the producers Carly Hugo and Matt Parker who had been on board at least for several years in the development.

Exclusive: HBO has closed a deal for Hot Coffee, the Susan Saladoff-directed competition documentary which focuses on how corporations have used the memory of outlandish legal verdicts as a way to press for tort reforms and avoid jury trials through arbitration on cases that actually have merit. HBO's Sheila Nevins viewed the documentary after it premiered last Monday. I'm told the deal was mid to high six-figures. HBO licensed the film for broadcast and VOD for 2 years, and will afford the film a qualifying Oscar theatrical run before it airs on the pay channel. Preferred Content's Kevin Iwashina brokered the sale. Carly Hugo and Alan Oxman produced with Saladoff. The film's title refers to the famous case of a woman"s million dollar judgment from McDonald's over a spilled cup of coffee. Saladin, a lawyer, focuses on other outrageous cases that illustrated where corporations were negligent or unresponsive.

#16. Higher Ground - Vera Farmiga Last year, Sundance welcomed Mark Ruffalo and Philip Seymour Hoffman's directorial debuts for a world premiere launch (Sympathy for Delicious and Jack Goes Boating respectively), seems fitting they'll do the same for an actress whose career got a major jump start at the fest with her brilliant perf in Down to the Bone. Shot this summer, it would be a "miracle" if Vera Farmiga's debut, an adaption of Carolyn Briggs' memoir This Dark World is somehow completed: juggling two new babies one called Higher Ground, the other one in a literal sense of the word. Scripted by Briggs and Tim Metcalfe, featuring Farmiga, Donna Murphy, John Hawkes, Dagmara Dominczyk and Joshua Leonard, and lensed by Debra Granik's Dp Michael McDonough, this follows outsider Corinne Walkers’ (Farmiga) journey from childhood to motherhood. Growing up, Corinne faces many challenges. A traumatic loss is...
