/Film recently ranked the five live-action Fantastic Four films and came to the following daring conclusion: Oley Sassone's unreleased 1994 entry "The Fantastic Four" was the best. Many have seen this version of "The Fantastic Four" thanks to the wide circulation of bootleg copies, and it's been ridiculed in many cinematic circles for its low budget (it was made for only $1 million), its corny dialogue, and its aggressively bad special effects. But while the cheapness of Sassone's film is visibly evident -- it was overseen by B-movie elder stateman Roger Corman -- it does manage to capture the comic-operatic tone of the original 1960s comic books. It accurately understands the outsize nature of the characters.
For many years, the only way to see "The Fantastic Four" was through surreptitiously distributed VHS taps handed off between nerdy high school students. Thanks...

You've probably heard the story by now. In the mid-1990s, famed B-movie producer Roger Corman (Death Race 2000) made a film based on Marvel Comics' first family of heroes, the Fantastic Four, that cost under a million dollars. It was a low budget crapfest that was made largely so the rights to the characters didn't revert back to Marvel, and though the movie never received a proper release, it has since leaked onto the internet and gained something of a cult following.
Director Marty Langford has put together the untold story about the making of that movie in a documentary called Doomed! The Untold Story of Roger Corman's The Fantastic Four, which is chock full of behind-the-scenes tales from the cast, crew, and those involved with the project. It's been searching for distribution for a while now, and Uncork'd Entertainment has stepped up and will release the documentary this year.

Last year, 20th Century Fox released a “Fantastic Four” reboot directed by Josh Trank. Starring Miles Teller (“Whiplash”), Michael B. Jordan (“Creed”), Kate Mara (“The Martian”), Jamie Bell (“Snowpiercer”), the film was a critical and commercial disaster. The reboot tried to jumpstart the franchise after the original 2005 series underperformed with its 2007 sequel. But in 1994, Bernd Eichinger of Constantin Film and director Roger Corman teamed up to make their own “Fantastic Four” film that never saw the light of day.

A a three and a half minute sneak peek has been released for the documentary Doomed! The Untold Story of Roger Corman's The Fantastic Four. The film tells the story of producer Roger Corman's attempt to bring The Fantastic Four to the big screen in 1994. Over the years, the film has gained a cult following from a bootlegged version of the movie that leaked.
For the longest time we've heard that the only motivation behind this Fantastic Four movie was so that the studio could keep the rights, but there's more to it than that. As you'll see in the trailer, the cast and crew really did try to make the best possible movie they could for under a million dollars.
Marty Langford is directing the documentary, and it looks like it's going to be packed full of interesting information that we never knew. I like that there...

First it was “Jodorowsky’s Dune,” a documentary regarding raconteur Alejandro Jodorowsky’s failed adaptation of “Dune." Next was the forthcoming look at Tim Burton’s aborted take on Superman. Now another documentary focuses on the infamous Roger Corman-executive-produced rendition of “The Fantastic Four.” Directed by Marty Langford, “Doomed! The Untold Story Of Roger Corman’s ‘The Fantastic Four’” has rounded up interviews with all the key players of the 1994 D-movie, including the main cast alongside director Oley Sassone, editor Glenn Garland, Corman himself and Troma co-founder Lloyd Kaufman, among many others, telling the story of an infamous production reportedly made to cling to franchise rights but that was never released theatrically and was initially only seen via bootlegs. The opening minutes of the documentary surprisingly don’t rely on making fun of the unreleased film but instead seems to be genuinely interested...

Here’s the official press release:
In 1994, Roger Corman was tapped to produce this Marvel superhero story on a very small film budget. The film was ultimately shelved prior to distribution, but a VHS copy was mysteriously leaked and the movie became a darling of film bootleggers and, more recently, web pirates. Rumors and speculation surrounding the production have become as much a part of the lore as the film itself.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Roger Corman’s edition of The Fantastic Four and finally, all of the secrets, stories and legal shenanigans that have kept this a ‘lost’ film will be revealed through in-depth, investigative interviews with the cast and crew.

Aside from all the new ideas to be found on crowdfunding websites such as Kickstarter - including a new variety of beef jerky made from posh Japanese cows - there are all sorts of opportunities to indulge our sense of nostalgia.
Through sheer coincidence, the projects that caught my eye this week all have a retro theme; there's a documentary about a forgotten adaptation of a Marvel comic book, a timely revival of one of the most innovative computer games of the 1980s, and a special English language edition of a classic Japanese manga. Although very different, each of these crowdfunding projects is worthy of support, since they're all niche interests that simply couldn't find financial backing through other means.
