No, don’t adjust your TV set nor frantically blink to try to focus, it’s supposed to look like that. She’s Allergic to Cats, the trippy collection of scenes held together by a handheld camera, wants you to feel like you’re watching it through the eyes of the filmmaker on screen who chops “video art” together with his camcorder. That’s just one of its trippy meta elements.
Mike Pinkney, the character, not necessarily the actor by the same name who plays the character, is a loser. He came to Hollywood to make movies, but he is stuck in his job as a dog groomer, spending nights in his rat-infested house making art and lusting over Cora (Sonja Kinski), the impossibly beautiful and vexing owner of one of the pets who came by his shop. With almost nothing going his way, from his absent (not physically) landlord and his quirky producer,...

Filmmaker Michael Reich has a thing for both household pets (and vermin) as well as bleeding VHS-damaged color schemes. The former dog groomer’s debut feature She’s Allergic to Cats, which premiered in ’16 at Fantasia Fest but is only now seeing a digital release via Gigantic Pictures, is about, natch, a socially awkward dog groomer (Michael Pinkney) attempting to deal with a rat infestation in his apartment while making an all-cats remake of Carrie. Sonja Kinski is the love interest whose cat may be the answer to the rodent issue. As the trailer above attests, Reich is fond of distressed […]...

At the start of April, SXSW and Amazon announced that films from this year’s canceled SXSW would stream for free on Prime Video, giving some filmmakers the opportunity to get their projects seen by Us audiences after the Covid-19 pandemic nixed plans for the annual festival, and now the full lineup has been confirmed.
Only a small section of filmmakers who were set to debut their titles at SXSW have taken Amazon up on its streaming offer, but 39 projects will be available to watch from April 27 to May 6.
“This is really an unprecedented time. People are waiting for the new normal. And others are waiting for the return to normal,” SXSW director of film Janet Pierson remarked to THR. “We’re just trying to make best of a complicated situation. And this was a concrete and exciting offer from Amazon to give a wider swath of filmmakers an opportunity...

Natalie Portman will be lending her voice and producing skills to the animated film Foxy Trotter.
Variety reports that the film will be directed by Chris Prynoski from a script written by Jess Rotter, Michael Reich, Jessica Hundley and Mike Pinkney.
Foxy Trotter tells the story of a motorcycle-riding, rock and roll photographer name Foxy in the early ’70s on a mission to capture the perfect rock photo. Portman will voice Foxy’s best friend, Ronnie, who is seduced by her nemisis Gunter and offered as a sacrifice in Gunter’s evil plan to destroy the universe.
One of the producers calls Foxy Trotter a "wild mix of ‘Barbarella’ meets ‘Sausage Party’ meets Easy Rider,”
Seems like we're getting more and more adult-centric animated films. It will be interesting to see if this movie is as risque as Sausage Party. What do you think, do we need more animated movies like this?...

So, what do you want from a weird, sketchy, indie genre film? How about a cool backstory, where the director (Michael Reich) supposedly funded the film in part by being a Daft Punk body double? Or how about mixing pop culture esoterica, from the Bruce Campbell classic Congo to an all feline version of Carrie, all smashed together with the aesthetic of a mid-80s music video? You’re going to get something you really like, or something that feels tedious, indulgent and downright irritating. Charitably, one can sense that She’s Allergic to Cats at least feigns trying to provide narrative coherence, with dog groomer Michael (Michael Pinkney) living in a Los Angele apartment inundated by rats, only to be inspired to rid the vermin by an...

Exclusive: Producer Andrew van den Houten’s fledgling New York-based finance, sales, distribution company has boarded world sales rights ahead of the film’s world premiere at Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal on July 21.
Music video director Michael Reich’s feature debut is based on his experiences as a dog groomer and follows a character with artistic ambitions who inhabits a lo-fi dreamscape that explodes when he meets a special woman.
Reich said She’s Allergic To Cats was funded entirely by savings accrued from his work as a body double for one of the Daft Punk robots, a role he has performed since 2005 when he starred in Electroma.
The film-maker’s music video credits include Ryan Adams, The Shins, Bad Religion, Yuck, and My Chemical Romance.
van den Houten has been involved in the development, financing, production and distribution of more than 20 features and his producer credits include All Cheerleaders Die, The Woman and [link...

“She’s Allergic To Cats” follows Michael Pinkney (played by Michael Pinkney), a dog groomer in Hollywood who strives to be more than his lowly job. He lives in the shadow of the film industry and resides in a crappy, rat-infested apartment. His mind constantly wanders into a dreamscape that resembles his analog video experiments. B

Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, better known as the french electronic duo Daft Punk, are noted for straying from conventions and playing by their own set of rules. This could partially explain why the duo’s directorial debut Electroma- 1) does not feature any music by Daft Punk, and 2) does not feature the musicians themselves in their iconic robotic garb (Peter Hurteau and Michael Reich are credited as Robot #1 and Robot #2 in the film).
Take everything you would picture in your mind when thinking about a “Daft Punk movie” and throw it out the window. Instead of creating a musical synth pop adventure for the whole family, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter take a much more experimental and moody approach in Electroma. There is no dialogue whatsoever, and the pace of the film is very subdued and deliberate. Some might even consider Electroma to be a tad pretentious,...
