Using VR and haptic vests to transport users to a sweaty club in 1980s Britain, In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats is so realistic that you might need a lie down afterwards

I’m not the kind of person who you’d normally find at an illegal rave at a regular raving time, let alone 9am on a Wednesday. But that’s where I found myself this week – virtually, anyway: with a haptic vest strapped on to my back, a controller in each hand and a virtual reality headset covering my eyes, I’m transported back to 1989, hooning through the suburbs with my friends to find a secret dancefloor.
Darren Emerson’s award-winning interactive VR film, In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats, tracks the acid-house movement and rave scene in Coventry, UK. It’s wholly transportive – I forget that I’m actually standing in the...

With its midnight screenings and strands for animation, documentary, and narrative, SXSW is an undeniable highlight of the festival circuit for short film fans. The programmers work hard to make sure the line-up adheres to the festival’s reputation and once again they haven’t let us down. Although we won’t be attending the event in person this year, we’ve still trawled the screenings for the standout shorts to keep an eye on if you’re on the ground in Austin, Texas. Promising a “glimpse into the future of film” the line-up is full of familiar names (Oscar-nominated Ice Merchants and The Flying Sailor) and lots of surprises – from zombies to pufflings and grandmas to clones, there’s a little something for everyone.

Underworld singer Karl Hyde has said that he and Rick Smith were inspired by remixes of their work when recording their latest album Barking. The duo's current record features input from Dubfire, Mark Knight & D. Ramirez, Appleblim & Al Tourettes and Paul van Dyk Asked about the guest collaborators, Hyde told Digital Spy: "It was a very conscious decision - it's been borne out of years of having our music remixed and really enjoying the remixes. The global electronic dance music community celebrated a victory last week as Underworld conquered a first for Edm groups in the States. Never before has an electronic act performed live on late-night television. But that all changed when Underworld's Karl Hyde, Rick Smith and Darren Emerson treated "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" viewers to a live performance of "Always Loved a Film," a collaboration for which they brought along electronic music staples Mark Knight and D. Ramirez.
Along with that feat, Underworld are also toasting the release of their latest album, Barking. Prior to the release of their new LP, Underworld hadn't much tested the waters of collaboration, but Knight and Ramirez reached out to Hyde late last year...
