Some critics believe that “cult movies” no longer exist. After all, how do you define an underground cult following in an age when independent films are more easily accessible than ever and you can instantly discuss movies with anyone in the world? It’s now possible to stream nearly any picture at the touch of a button, so it makes sense that the days of underground screenings and traditional word-of-mouth are long behind us.
That being said, there’s an argument to be made about a modern-day equivalent to the cult classic. The fickle tides of online engagement mean that some truly great media often slips through the cracks of the distribution system, resulting in notable works of art becoming lost in online limbo because they didn’t please the all-knowing algorithm or were just released at the wrong place and the wrong time. Hell, some of these movies can...

I don't know what the hell happened...I've been moaning about quality albums, you know, with great songs top to bottom, and then bam! I get 28-year old singer/songwriter Willy Mason's excellent new release Carry On, Bob Dylan's Another Self Portrait - The Bootleg Series Vol. 10, and newcomer pop-rock crooner Jay Stolar's More Than We Think (image above). Maybe it's my state of mind, maybe it's the state of the world, maybe it's the state of universe. Regardless, this simple, evocative music cuts through all the bullshit that seems destined to drag us down into the abyss of life's giant cesspool.
Jay Stolar - More Than We Think (Kingston)
I loathe listening to new artists' self-released CDs. Most of these well-intentioned singers/songwriters/bands and their new music leaves much to be desired. In dire need of A&Ring, editing, refining, road testing, et al.

Exclusive: Paul Giamatti and FX are in the early stages of a limited series on the spark that started the fire of the Civil War. I’ve learned that Untitled John Brown Project, as it is currently being called, traces the true story of the abolitionist’s transformation from a lowly 50-year old farmer to a notorious anti-slavery freedom fighter in Kansas and his famed 1859 raid on Harper’s Ferry. The project is based on Tony Horwitz’s 2011 book Midnight Rising which examines Brown’s attack on the Virginia arsenal. Though ultimately unsuccessful, the raid, which started as an attempt to launch an armed revolt against the forces of slavery in a politically fraught America, is widely acknowledged as being an emotional tipping point toward the South’s secession the following year. Defeated by Marines led by a certain Col. Robert E. Lee, Brown was convicted and killed by hanging...

Not totally inactive (he was an executive producer on Kelly Reichardt’s Wendy and Lucy & Meek’s Cutoff), but it’s been a whopping eight years since Phil Morrison burst onto the indie scene with Junebug (Sundance 05′). With a trio that includes Park City regulars Paul Rudd and Paul Giamatti (see set pic) team with Sally Hawkins, Lucky Dog, his sophomore comedy, not only matches the setting of the fest in terms of its wintery backdrop, but it’s a premium title that will likely fit well for the Eccles and have indie distributors in wheel and deal mode.

Magnet Releasing has taken it upon themselves to distribute the supernatural sci-fi horror comedy John Dies at the End. I had a chance to see this film while at Sundance earlier this year, and I thought it was an extremely entertaining flick. It's definitely not for everyone because it's such an odd, far out movie, but that's why I liked it so much! It was different kind of wacky than anything else being made.
The film was written and directed by Don Coscarelli (Bubba Ho-Tep), and is an adaptation of the novel written by Cracked.com's David Wong.
