Fifty-nine years ago, soft-voiced singer and ace songwriter Bill Anderson whispered his way into Grand Ole Opry membership, where he’s been a mainstay ever since. “Whisperin'” Bill’s vocal style remains subdued in the present but his legendary gift for songwriting, which first garnered attention in 1958 with Ray Price’s rendition of “City Lights,” continues to resonate throughout country music. In 2018, Anderson earned membership in the multi-genre Songwriters Hall of Fame, having already been inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and Country Music Hall of Fame.

As Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” remixed with Billy Ray Cyrus, logs a 13th week at Number One on the Rolling Stone Top 100 chart, Cyrus premieres “Chevys and Fords,” this one a collaboration with singer-songwriter Johnny McGuire. A gently rocking country tune brimming with Springsteen-inspired, vehicle-based nostalgia, it finds the two vocalists singing about how they “come from a long line of Chevys and Fords.”

Life was a relative mess for most of Nashville's main characters as the Cma Awards unfolded in this week's episode. "Relative," in the sense that everywhere they turned, it seemed someone's relative (whether past, present or future) was causing them distress. Thankfully, they had Trisha Yearwood, Joe Nichols, Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood and the Band Perry, plus some nifty shelf bling to console them.

A demonstrator has been arrested in Wisconsin for excessive use of a cowbell. The 26-year-old from Appleton was protesting for Recall Walker in the 1800 block of Oshkosh Avenue on Thursday, before his group was asked by an officer to keep the noise to a minimum, reports the North Western. Oshkosh Police Department spokesman Joe Nichols explained that an officer responded to complaints from people that the group were blocking access to a driveway. The demonstrator proceeded to give "more cowbell", and shook it directly in the officer's face despite requests to be quiet. He then pushed the officer twice after he tried to take the cowbell off him. The man was then "directed" to the ground, while another protester (more)...

"The Walking Dead" Marathon (11 a.m. to 12 midnight Est on AMC)
If you've missed out on the critically-acclaimed zombie drama or are just trying to avoid all of the other soulless, dead-eyed beings that congregate on New Year's Eve, it's your lucky night: AMC is re-airing "The Walking Dead" in its entirety, from the premiere episode to the recently-aired midseason finale. It's a gory way to celebrate 2012, but it's probably less messy than going out for the night.
"Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2012" (8 p.m. to 2:13 a.m. Est on ABC)
Those intro tradition can keep it locked on the alphabet network for nearly 5.5 hours of bi-coastal New Year's festivities, presided over by the eponymous Dick Clark and the ever-present Ryan Seacrest. Things kick off at 8 p.m. with "New Year's Rockin' Eve: The 40th Anniversary Party," hosted by Jenny McCarthy in Times Square and Fergie in Los Angeles.

How does country star Jewel keep her figure in tune? Mesquite-smoked Texas-style barbecue. Okay, maybe that's not her most tried-and-true diet tip, but the country singer certainly has a go-to barbecue joint: Hard 8 BBQ in Stephenville, Texas. "I take all my out-of-town guests here, and they rave about it," she tells People Country in its September issue. "In fact, I think they visit me just for the barbecue." Ah, spring. When a young man's fancy turns to love. Or, in the case I've been witnessing up close and personal for the last several hours, a young bug's thoughts. Those bugs, feeling no moral compass that would direct them otherwise, indulge those thoughts. This makes them stupid and slow and vulnerable to some very large predators in the central Florida area known as "windshields". We've had to get ours scrubbed twice since leaving Miami. It's gross. Here's what's on TV tonight:
8:00 p.m.: "90210" on The CW. Second season finale.
"American Idol" on Fox. We're down to the last three! Thank god.
"The Biggest Loser" on NBC.
"Dancing With the Stars" on ABC.
"NCIS" on CBS.

"Deadliest Catch" on Discovery.

The 45th annual Academy of Country Music Awards is taking place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and some of the early winners have been unraveled. Among those being the first to be announced as the recipients of the coveted country music kudos were Lady Antebellum and Miranda Lambert.
Coming triumphant over Miranda, Carrie Underwood, Billy Currington and Taylor Swift in the Song of the Year category, Lady A nailed the first award on the evening. They received the prize from fellow country singer Faith Hill. "Thank God, thank our families, thank the fans so much," singer Hillary Scott said in accepting the award.
Lady A then got another kudo when Joe Nichols and Winter Olympic medalist Lindsay Vaughn revealed them as the winner of Single Record of the Year. In her second acceptance speech, Hillary said, "I don't think this can compare to a gold medal.
