Canal+, France’s leading pay TV group, has signed distribution deals with Universal and Sony to ramp up its programming of U.S. movies.
Under the pact, Canal+ now has access to the studios’ new films six months after their releases, a spokesperson told Variety. Sony’s “Spiderman : No Way Home” is currently being broadcast on Canal+’s linear pay TV channels, along with its transactional VOD platform, My Canal.
The news was teased by Maxime Saada, Canal+ Group’s chair and CEO, during the company’s upbeat press conference on Sept. 14, which was held at their posh headquarters in Paris. Saada, who recently joined the management board of Vivendi, Canal Plus Group’s parent company, said the outfit already boasts partnerships with Fox, Disney and Warner, as well as Paramount.

The Cesar Awards, France’s highest film honors, have confirmed that the ceremony will be held on March 12, ideally as an in-person show. The 46th edition of the awards will also be broadcast live on Canal Plus. A spokesperson for the Cesar Academy told Variety that a virtual show is also being considered and a final decision on the format of the ceremony will be taken after January 20.
The event normally takes place in late February, so a mid-March date isn’t a big stretch. France has been coping with the second wave of the pandemic and theaters are due to reopen on Dec. 15 after a 90-day shutdown.
“In the face of the pandemic we’ve struggled with for months and which marked 2020, the Cesar ceremony will offer a moment of celebration and support for films, and more generally, culture,” said the French Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Red carpet rage, walkouts and black humour mark fractious 45th edition of French Oscars.
The French film industry’s attitude towards sexual abuse and gender equality was in the spotlight like never before as Roman Polanski was feted with best director for An Officer And A Spy (J’Accuse) at the César awards on Friday night.
The ceremony at the Salle Pleyel concert hall in central Paris was a fractious, politically-charged event.

There were bound to be some pin-drop moments during tonight’s César Awards, but for the most part things ran smoothly until Roman Polanski was named Best Director for his Dreyfus Affair drama, An Officer And A Spy, late into the evening. The film had already taken Best Costumes and Best Adapted Screenplay, yet when it was announced that Polanski was named Best Director, walkouts followed.
Most notable was actress Adèle Haenel (herself nominated in the lead category for Portrait Of A Lady On Fire) who recently accused another director of sexually abusing her from age 12. Each of the three times that Polanski’s Venice Grand Jury Prize winner was awarded a César tonight, there was discomfort in the room.
A l'annonce du César de la Meilleure Réalisation pour Roman Polanski ("J'accuse"), Adèle Haenel quitte la salle.

The 45th César Awards ceremony took place on Friday, February 28, at the Salle Pleyel in Paris to honor the best in French cinema of 2019 — and at a fractious moment for the Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma. The event was emceed by French comedian Florence Foresti, with actress Sandrine Kiberlain presiding. See the full list of winners below.
Earlier this month, the entire board of directors of the French academy announced their planned resignation after the publication of an open letter from hundreds of members calling for a complete overhaul of the organization. The announcement unspooled in the wake of allegedly dodgy financial practices, an overall lack of transparency, and the repeated omission of filmmakers Claire Denis and Virginie Despentes from the Academy’s annual Dîner des Révélations event, focused on emerging talent. The young guests are asked to nominate talent they’d like to see at the event,...

René Goscinny and illustrator Albert Uderzo gave the world a charming gift when they debuted The Adventures of Asterix in 1959. 60 years on, through excursions off the page and across the big and small screens, our affection for the diminutive Gaul and his giant sidekick remains. The rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia are a powerful accessory.
This time – despite the ever-present threat of the Romans – the challenge faced by the feisty villagers comes from within. Getafix the Druid (brewer of the magic potion which sustains the village and gives Asterix his mighty powers) has taken a tumble and broken his leg. With his mortality mortifyingly evident and his present handicap, Getafix realises he needs an apprentice.
Armed with a shortlist from his fellow druid elders, protected by Asterix (Christian Clavier) and Obelix (Guillaume Briat) and accompanied by inquisitive young Impedimenta (Florence Foresti), Getafix (Bernard Alane) crisscrosses Gaul in search of a worthy...

Marley (15)
(Kevin Macdonald, 2012, Us/UK) 145 mins
Authoritative to the point of exhausting, Macdonald's documentary compiles an awesome amount of footage, photos, interviews, etc – but then it's a big subject. Whether you really get to the man beyond the legend is debatable (this was made with Marley family backing), but there's much here you've never seen, from Bob's Rasta roots to his kick-around in London's Battersea Park.
Salmon Fishing In The Yemen (12A)
(Lasse Hallström, 2012, UK) Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt. 106 mins
An incongruous setting for a mushy fish-out-of-water romcom, with Blunt and her sheikh boss lured by McGregor's tackle.
Elles (18)
(Malgorzata Szumowska, 2011, Fra/Pol/Ger) Juliette Binoche, Anaïs Demoustier. 99 mins
Empowerment and eroticism mix uneasily when Binoche's enquiries into student prostitution affect her own life.
Irvine Welsh's Ecstasy (18)
(Rob Heydon, 2011, Can) Adam Sinclair, Kristin Kreuk, Billy Boyd. 99 mins
Rave-era yarn that's 15 years too late to be the Trainspotting of Mdma it wants to be.

A French voice artist goes to La to plead for her job in this floppy comedy
Floppy, fun-free comedy in which French voice artiste Jeanne (Florence Foresti) travels to La to reason with Jennifer Marshall (Nikki Deloach), a Hollywood starlet whose decision to quit popular soap La Couples has bumped the happy-go-lucky Parisian out of work. Cue a guided tour of unfunny stereotypes (jive-talking street hustlers, hysterical Indian security guard, maniacal Swedish fitness instructor) that ends with Jeanne and her tacked-on love interest accidently knocking down part of a Hollywood landmark. Hollywoo needs a D, but it can have a big fat F.

The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists (U)
(Peter Lord, Jeff Newitt, 2012, UK/Us) Hugh Grant, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton. 88 mins
Aardman sets sail on seas of clay, in what feels more like an animated Blackadder than Pirates Of The Caribbean. Grant's inept rogue is good company, falling foul (or rather fowl) of Queen Victoria and Charles Darwin in a nonsensical, if inconsequential, romp that's lifted, as usual, by Aardman's eccentric details and fine craftsmanship.
Into The Abyss (12A)
(Werner Herzog, 2011, Us/UK/Ger) 107 mins
Herzog studies a Texas homicide from all angles, building less a polemic against the death penalty than a humane survey of death and loss.
This Is Not A Film (U)
(Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, Jafar Panahi, 2010, Ira) 75 mins
Panahi boldly defies his own house arrest by "not making" a film within his apartment, the confinement provoking a profound questioning of cinema itself.

After winning the most prestigious award for acting in Hollywood this past Sunday, Jean Dujardin is heading back to his comedic roots for a new project. THR has informed us that he may be returning to France to team up with the comedy troupe that helped kick start his career in the upcoming film, Le Petit Joueur.
Joucla and Dujardin were once members of the sketch comedy troupe Nous C Nous, with Bruno Salomone, Eric Massot and Eric Collado, who will all join the recent Oscar winner for the project. Dujardin‘s real wife, Alexandra Lamy and her sister Audrey, along with Shirley Bousquet and Florence Foresti will be joining the comedic fun as well. Although the French media got wind of the project today, a rep for the film’s director, Manu Joucla, refused to give any details about the project.
