Hamaguchi Ryusuke’s “Evil Does Not Exist,” was Sunday evening named as the best picture at the Asian Film Awards.
The 17th edition of the prizes was held at the Xiqu Centre, part of the West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong.
While “Evil Does Not Exist” and Korean blockbuster “12.12: The Day” had dominated the nominations with six each, including those in the best film category, the prizes on Sunday were much more evenly distributed. No title collected more than two prizes.
Outside, crowds failed to be muted by the March drizzle, though VIP guests were given escorts with purple umbrellas.
Filmmaker and industry attendance was also robust. Those spotted on the red carpet and pre-event cocktails included: Lee Yong Kwan (former chair of the Busan film festival), Tom Yoda, Udine festival heads Sabrina Baracetti and Thomas Bertacche, Anthony Chen, Stanley Kwan, Rina Damayanti, Hong Kong distributor Winnie Tsang,...

Exclusive: Chudor House Productions and Artist International Group are teaming on a series adaptation of Truth is a Flightless Bird, the internationally bestselling crime novel from Akbar Hussain.
Banshee‘s Adam Targum will serve as showrunner for the drama, with Odiri Iwuji at Chudor House and Aleksey Ageyev at Artist International Group producing. NneNne Iwuji (African Queens: Njinga) is set to co-write alongside Targum and will serve as an executive producer.
Set between Kenya and the U.S., Truth is a Flightless Bird is a brutal love letter to the frontier town that is present-day Nairobi: a studied observation of the failure of bare-knuckled capitalism, the inequality machines our cities have become, and — ultimately — the profoundly irrational human capacity to hope, to risk everything in order to have something in which to believe.

“Tiger Stripes”, the opening film of this year’s Singapore International Film Festival (Sgiff), was “kind of a joke that became something very, very close to me and ended up being this film,” Malaysian filmmaker, Amanda Nell Eu, said during Thursday night’s opening ceremony.
Speaking to a packed theatre before the screening, Eu said her inspiration had been puberty mixed with her sense of humor.
“I love playing with horror. I love playing with comedy and I was like, I want to make a film about a girl who literally turns into a monster because I felt like a monster as a kid,” she said. “ ‘Tiger Stripes’ is really a story that fights for the people who feel like they don’t fit in society.”
Opening the festival, Singapore filmmaker and Sgiff chairperson, Boo Junfeng, talked about the event’s “sense of community” and a “collective sense of purpose.

Local crime thriller Across the Furious Sea, directed and co-written by Cao Baoping, dominated China’s box office over the weekend with a $24.7 million two-day opening kicking off Saturday. The film’s strong start continues a recent market trend of Chinese moviegoers favoring well-told local crime stories.
But it was another weekend of struggle for Hollywood filmmaking in China. Disney Animation’s Wish opened in fifth place with only $3.5 million in ticket revenue, according to data from Artisan Gateway. Lionsgate’s prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, meanwhile, plummeted in its second frame, earning a little under $1 million. Disney’s The Marvels likewise continued its decline, slipping off of China’s top 10 list for the weekend (the film’s total sits at $16 million and it is unlikely to earn much more — making for an all-time low for an MCU tentpole).

The 34th edition of the Singapore International Film Festival (Sgiff) today announced the return of two of its awards, the Cinema Icon Award and the International Federation of Film Critics (Fipresci) Award, which were last part of the Silver Screen Awards in 2019 and 2006 respectively.
This year, the festival is celebrating the largest number of awards in over a decade. The reintroduction of two prestigious awards, in addition to the Outstanding Contribution to Southeast Asian Cinema Award, highlights Sgiff's pivotal role as a platform that harnesses the vibrancy of the film industry.
“For many, an award is a stamp of recognition or a form of approval by fellow industry players but it does much more. “I hope we can communicate and reconcile again,” said Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon on the opening night of the South Korean city’s film festival.
With so much of the dialogue in opening drama “Because I Hate Korea” discussing Korean societal rigidities, group loyalties, long working hours and poor pay (which cause the protagonist to emigrate to laid-back New Zealand), it is easy to forget that many of these characteristics are what may have saved this year’s Busan International FIlm Festival from going off the rails.
Mid-year, the festival’s aging senior management had a self-inflicted meltdown (a senior moment?) when chairman and co-founder Lee Yong-kwan set off a chain of events that caused multiple resignations, highlighting the old city-versus-festival political divide and alienating local sponsors and industry guilds.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Korea’s Busan International Film Festival (Biff) has been through a fair amount of drama this year.
The turmoil started in May when Biff chairman Lee Yong-kwan appointed a close associate, Cho Jongkook, as managing director alongside artistic director Huh Moonyung, a decision that proved highly unpopular with some sectors of the local Korean film industry.
Huh resigned, and in an apparently unrelated development, was accused of sexual harassment by a festival employee around the same time. Lee also resigned, Cho was dismissed by the Biff board, and Oh Seok-geun, director of Busan’s Asian Contents & Film Market (Acfm), who had supported Lee’s decision to hire Cho, also stepped down. By early July, four of the festival’s top management were out of the door.

A predictably spectacular sunset spreads streaks of pink and orange across a northern Spanish late September sky, heralding the end of another packed edition of the San Sebastian Film Festival, where at the closing gala, “The Rye Horn” the second feature from Spanish director Jaione Camborda has just been handed the Golden Shell, the festival’s top award.
It is perhaps a surprising win, but does now mark the fourth consecutive year that the festival’s most prestigious prize has gone to a female director. Javier Bardem, winner of a San Sebastian 2023 Donostia Award for career achievement, is putting back his on-stage acceptance of the distinction until the 2024 San Sebastian Film Festival.
The postponement is due to the “limits imposed under the strike called by the U.S. Actors Union (SAG-AFTRA),” the San Sebastian Festival announced Friday.
It deprives this year’s Festival of its biggest on-stage major star moment this year.
The fest will, however, enjoy its customary bullish presence of world-class auteurs, led this year by Claire Denis, main competition jury chair, and Victor Erice, will accept his Donostia Award on Sept. 29. San Sebastian announced Friday that Hayao Miyazaki will also accept a Donostia Award online.
Gabriel Byrne, François Cluzet, Emmanuelle Devos, Griffin Dunne, Aidan Gillen, Mads Mikkelsen, James Norton and Dominic West have confirmed their attendance, Byrne and Gillen for one of the festival’s biggest tickets, James Marsh’s official selection closing film “Dance First.

Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea International Film Festival has cancelled its swanky Women in Cinema gala event at the upcoming Venice Film Festival in response to the ongoing actors’ strike.
Red Sea CEO Mohammed Al Turki announced the move on his Instagram account on Monday.
“Due to the actors’ strike and in solidarity with the actors. We are unable to proceed with the Women in Cinema event,” he wrote.
Venice, running from August 30 to September 9, is one of the first big film events to feel the heat of the actors’ strike, with original opening film Challengers pulled after its announcement due to the fact its key cast, topped by Zendaya, would be unlikely to attend.
Festival head Alberto Barbera has pulled together an impressive line-up nonetheless but it remains to be seen how much talent will be swilling around the Lido with little end in sight for the actors’ strike which began mid-July.

Fifth-generation Chinese filmmaker Chen Kaige’s “Farewell My Concubine” wowed the Cannes jury under president Louis Malle in 1993 — all the way to a Palme d’Or win. But by the time the three-hour epic set in the world of the Peking Opera reached U.S. theaters that year, Miramax’s Harvey Weinstein had cut 20 minutes from the movie that left even Malle puzzled. According to Peter Biskind‘s influential “Down and Dirty Pictures,” Malle said the new version seemed “longer because it doesn’t make any sense. It was better before those guys made cuts.”
At last, “Farewell My Concubine,” the only Chinese-language film ever to win the Palme, is now being returned to theaters in its full 171-minute glory, courtesy of Film Movement Classics. IndieWire exclusively announces that the distributor will release a newly restored 4K version in North American theaters beginning September 22 at Film Forum in New York City.

This article contains spoilers for "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse."
Spider-Man has faced many foes on the big screen, but none of them have been quite so confusing to fight as The Spot. Voiced by Jason Schwartzman, this villain's big-screen debut in "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" sees him clumsily trying to use his new powers to rob an Atm (because the job market is unfairly hostile to candidates who have a void where their face should be).
We've seen characters that have the power to create portals before. In "X-Men: Days of Future Past," Blink (Fan Bingbing) used them to buy time during a doomed battle against the Sentinels. More recently, "Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" staged a daring heist that hinged on a portal spell. But animation might be the best medium for exploring the infinite possibilities of portals -- as seen in the portal doors of "Monsters, Inc.

At Tuesday’s press conference in Cannes featuring this year’s competition jury, Oscar winner Brie Larson was asked to recall her reaction upon receiving the call to serve. “I care so much about this medium and so to be in the company of these people I admire so much is a huge honor,” she answered.
Larson channeled that into what looked like exhilaration hours later as she hit the Palais red carpet for the first time in making her Cannes debut, wearing a Chanel gown accessorized with the luxury fashion house’s high jewelry. After exiting the car, Larson was all smiles, expressive faces and the pièce de résistance — a dance break at the top of the iconic stairs — before entering the venue for the night’s opening ceremony and a screening of Maïwenn’s Johnny Depp-starrer Jeanne du Barry.

Jewelry fans surely were satisfied by the abundance of statement necklaces, gemstone earrings, cocktail rings and brooches worn by the stars at the 2023 Oscars. Tiffany Haddish, Emma Watson, Melanie Lynskey, Noah Schnapp and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez were among the thousand guests who joined Sir Elton John and David Furnish for their annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party in West Hollywood Park on Sunday night.

First held in 1992, the event is one of Hollywood’s longest-running Oscar parties, besting even the vaunted Vanity Fair party by one year. The star told reporters why he thought his party had maintained such staying power and relevance over the decades.
“We’ve grown immensely. The first party we held, we raised $350,000 and thought that we were kings of the world,” John remembered. “And it just evolved, and it had a lively vibe, and we started to have live music,...

Stars such as Michelle Yeoh and Halle Berry wore white to match a champagne carpet but not every star got the memo on its change of colour
Oscars 2023: Everything Everywhere All at Once triumphs with major sweepStars celebrate at the 2023 Oscars afterparties – in pictures
If the Oscars is seen as the peak of red carpet dressing, the Academy changed things up for 2023 – with a champagne-coloured carpet. While the change was not known about when stylists were finalising their client’s outfits, there was a noticeable matchiness between carpet and clothing. White, beige and oyster dresses dominated, bringing a slightly bridal feel.
The stars of winning film Everything Everywhere All at Once were on board. Jamie Lee Curtis wore a long crystal gown the colour of champagne, while Michelle Yeoh wore a tiered white strappy gown by Christian Dior. Others wearing white included Halle Berry, Michelle Williams and the singer Tems.
