John Oliver discussed the Equifax security breach on Sunday's Last Week Tonight, outlining how the credit reporting agency could have prevented the cybersecurity disaster.
In September, Equifax announced that cyber thieves hacked into the company and lifted sensitive information – including names, birth dates, social security numbers, driver's license info and addresses – for roughly 145 million Americans. And as Oliver emphasized to his millennial viewers: it's a huge deal.

Nick Berardini couldn’t center on a more prescient subject for his debut documentary, Killing Them Safely. The subject of police brutality has become a boiling pot over the last few years with the innumerable incidents of police brutality, but along with polarizing conversations about the necessity of body cameras and structural changes to the way police interact with the public, there’s an attendant conversation about what tools police officers should be using, or even need. Berardini’s documentary addresses that conversation directly by focusing on the ethical blurriness of the use of tasers.
Berardini’s film finds a gateway into the issue through the death of Stanley Harlan, a 23-year-old Missouri young man who was hit with a taser for 31 consecutive seconds in front of his home after getting out of his car to protest being stopped for speeding by a police officer. Berardini said the movie began...

Democrats are “expensive and a little outdated” while Republicans “have new ideas that won't break your budget,” according to a new digital ad parodying TLC's “Say Yes to the Dress” created by The College Republican National Committee. In a bid to sway young voters in Florida's tight gubernatorial race, the ad portrays incumbent governor Rick Smith as a dress designer who's fresh and full of new ideas on a budget, while democratic opponent Charlie Crist is a frumpy dress that's “outdated” and “comes with additional costs.” See video: Jon Stewart Slams ‘Elementary School’ Education of Republicans Denying Climate Change After trying on both.

This morning news broke of the death of Rick Smith, the famed makeup artist behind The Exorcist, Little Big Man, The Godfather, Taxi Driver, and Amadeus. We spoke to director Guillermo del Toro, a close friend and colleague of Smith's, and condensed and edited his comments into this as-told-to piece. Without Dick Smith, I would not be making movies. He was my mentor. The first time I came into contact with him was as a child. When The Exorcist came out, I bought his makeup kit (below) in a toy store. It came with gelatin and molds and colors, and I did my own makeup effects at a very young age. It wasn’t until later that I actually wrote to Dick, explaining to him how much I needed to take his makeup-effects course because no one in Mexico was going to help me do effects for my first feature,...

They may have a "silly, sweary name", but they headlined the Park stage at Glastonbury, featured in Danny Boyle's Olympic ceremony, and have just released their third album
In June, Benjamin Power attended his first-ever Glastonbury. He sat around, enjoyed the good weather, wandered over to the Healing Fields, "had a bit of nitrous oxide, just because I felt like I probably should". As the sun went down and Mick Jagger wound up his pre-gig pilates, Power headed over to the Park Stage. There he met his musical partner Andrew Hung, and together Fuck Buttons set about headlining Glastonbury.
Asking a band like – or, indeed, named – Fuck Buttons to play against the Rolling Stones might have seemed like a stunt booking on the part of the Eavises. Who, exactly, would turn down watching Mick and Keef do Brown Sugar in favour of a group the Radio Times carefully asterisked,...

Underworld's frontman Karl Hyde has teased a minute of a new song. The musician posted the audio of a track called 'Cut Clouds' on YouTube yesterday (January 14). "A new year, and a fans-only sneak preview of a new track from Karl - we hope you like it," the description read. "Stay tuned for more exciting news to come. Happy New Year." Credited to Hyde alone but posted on the band's YouTube channel, it is unclear if the track will end up as an Underworld release or Hyde solo song. Speaking to Digital Spy in December 2010, Hyde admitted that he and Rick Smith had many fallings out over the years as people do but "just decided not to split up". "A long time ago we said that even if we're not friends it shouldn't stop us making music," he said. "You don't have to be friends to (more)...

The recently unveiled trailer for Danny Boyle's hotly anticipated Fox Searchlight thriller "Trance" hints at a film that aims to put you in the state described in the title. Propelled by a score from Underworld's Rick Smith, lensed just as playfully as "Slumdog Millionaire" and fueled by a story full of twists and turns, "Trance" looks like quite the ride. James McAvoy heads the cast alongside Rosario Dawson and a menacing Vincent Cassel. The film opens in the UK on March 27. Fox Searchlight has yet to announce a U.S. release date. Watch the trailer below: <a href="http://movies.uk.msn.com/exclusives/video.aspx?videoid=db7c65d8-95a8-4dd5-b9f5-fba4fa0ab4a5&src=v5:embed:syndication:&from=shareembed-syndication" _cke_saved_href="http://movies.uk.msn.com/exclusives/video.aspx?videoid=db7c65d8-95a8-4dd5-b9f5-fba4fa0ab...

Tonight, during the closing credits of Film 2013 on BBC1, the first trailer for Danny Boyle's thriller "Trance" was unveiled. And, a few hours later, the full thing has made its way online via MSN. Starring James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson and Vincent Cassel, the film tells the story of an assistant at an auction house (McAvoy) who masterminds a heist and teams up with a gang of thieves led by Cassel, only to suffer a blow to the head and wake up with amnesia. The assistant is then subjected to analysis from a hypnotist as the gang begin to suspect duplicity in their ranks. Powered by a score from Underworld's Rick Smith, this looks like another inventively lensed effort from Boyle, wrapped up in a high-wire, pulpy thriller. There is a frenetic and somewhat disorienting pace about the whole thing, that is nonetheless compelling and needless to say, the whole shebang should impress.

The secret's out - the Olympic opening ceremony was a pyrotechnic act of confession and as its writer, I was elated by the magic we created
It's the morning after the opening ceremony. For two years I've felt constipated with secrets, but last night was a pyrotechnic act of confession, and I feel elated. At last I don't have to talk about "Betty" any more. Betty was the code name for Thomas Heatherwick's beautiful, delicate Olympic cauldron. She was named after the executive producer's dog. And so we were liable to get strange messages about "going to visit Betty" and "what to do if Betty malfunctions" and even "burning Betty". For the last two years I've been going round bragging about being the writer on Danny Boyle's opening ceremony. The usual response is: "Wow!" followed by: "Errrm, what do you mean?" Which is what I asked Danny when he first asked me.

Alex Trimble, lead singer of Two Door Cinema Club, has spoken of his pride of his role in the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony. Trimble sang 'Caliban's Dream', a song written by Underworld's Rick Smith, which accompanied the Olympic Flame as it entered the stadium last night (July 27). The singer was personally chosen by ceremony director Danny Boyle for the key role in the show. Recalling the events that led to his appointment, Trimble said: "I remember getting a call from my manager one morning while I was on tour in America. It woke me up and I was half asleep and hungover - he told me that Danny wanted me to come and perform a song at the Olympics. "I listened and then went back to sleep. Olympics ceremony titled Isles of Wonder will involve NHS nurses and hundreds of children, says its creator Danny Boyle
"Be not afeared. The isle is full of noises." As a welcome to London for athletes and spectators arriving for the 2012 Olympics, opening ceremony director Danny Boyle has decided Caliban's line from Shakespeare's The Tempest is particularly apposite.
So much so that the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire director has chosen it as the inspiration for a £27m four-hour spectacular that will feature a tribute to the NHS, Europe's largest bell, a torch lighting sequence and a cast and crew of 12,000 – all shot through with "British humour" and set to the music of Underworld.
Unveiling a handful of details of his vision for the first time with exactly six months to go until the ceremony, Boyle said it would not match the jaw-dropping scale and expense of Beijing in 2008 but would aim to...

Underworld singer Karl Hyde has admitted that he and Rick Smith have not always been the best of friends. The musicians have been working together for over 30 years, initially forming as The Screen Gemz, before founding Freur. In September, they released Barking, their eighth studio album as Underworld. Asked for the secret behind the length of their musical partnership, Hyde quipped: "We've had loads of fallings out - We just decided not to split up! It really was as simple as that. A long time ago we said that even if we're not friends it shouldn't stop us making music. "You don't have to be friends to make music. Underworld singer Karl Hyde has said that he and Rick Smith were inspired by remixes of their work when recording their latest album Barking. The duo's current record features input from Dubfire, Mark Knight & D. Ramirez, Appleblim & Al Tourettes and Paul van Dyk Asked about the guest collaborators, Hyde told Digital Spy: "It was a very conscious decision - it's been borne out of years of having our music remixed and really enjoying the remixes. "It's very frustrating that albums are done and dusted and the remixes come after the album. We just said, 'Wouldn't it be great to get into the studio with some of these people and find out what happens before the tracks are even finished?'. We love jamming, we really love jamming." Underworld spent the ’90s selling techno that was bulked up by rock-serious signifiers, particularly Karl Hyde’s stream-of-consciousness vocal rants and banks of synthesizers that didn’t hearken back to disco so much as to bloated mid-’80s new wave of the Simple Minds variety. But over time, Hyde and partner Rick Smith have gravitated toward more obvious vocal hooks, as well as a sprightlier musical style, although the results have been just as uneven. Despite its title, Barking is, in some ways, the most tuneful Underworld album yet, which isn’t saying a lot—Hyde isn’t much of ...

"Underworld" star Karl Hyde is to debut 70 new artworks as part of the What's Going on in Your Head as You're Dancing exhibition at the Laforet Museum in Harajuku, Japan. It will be the "Born Slippy" hitmaker's first solo art show, and his first since he presented pieces in New York with "Underworld" partner Rick Smith and artist John Warwicker in 2008.
Hyde tells Spinner, "It started off by making series of marks while I was doing interviews, marks that were inspired by walking through the streets of cities."
"That started to develop into seeing the same shapes I see in my head while I'm onstage with 'Underworld'. I see physical 3-D shapes in my head while I'm onstage of the potential moves I might make when I'm thinking about moving across stage or interpreting the sound."...

One of the reasons why Avatar has been such a success (besides the mind-numbingly beautiful scenery) is that it has a simple story. The David versus Goliath plot can--and has already been--applied to situations around the world by activist groups eager to hitch their wagon to the blockbuster film. But the latest campaign by environmental groups including the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, and Earthworks might be the most effective. The organizations have teamed up to purchase a full-page ad in the Oscar edition of Variety comparing the battle between Pandorans and the Sky People to the destruction of the Boreal forest to make way for oil extraction in the Canadian Tar Sands.
Sierra Club Canada elaborated on the ad in a press release:
