Ahead of the 2021 Oscars, the academy made the decision to merge the Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories into one. The films vying for the second annual Best Sound prize are “Belfast,” “Dune,” “No Time to Die,” “The Power of the Dog,” and “West Side Story.” Our current odds indicate that “Dune” (31/10) will be victorious, followed in order of likelihood by “West Side Story” (39/10), “No Time to Die” (4/1), “The Power of the Dog” (9/2), and “Belfast” (9/2).
The craftspeople included in the current lineup have collectively amassed a staggering 86 previous nominations and 16 wins for their sound work in 57 films. Those responsible for the largest chunks are Andy Nelson and Gary Rydstrom, whose shared bid for “West Side Story” brings their respective individual totals to 22 and 19. Rydstrom has collected seven trophies over the years, including two each for “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” (1992), “Jurassic Park” (1994), and “Saving Private Ryan” (1999) and one for...

Updated March 21: “Dune” got two big boosts with Mpse and Cas wins, bolstering its Oscar chances on Sunday. The sci-fi epic took feature effects/foley at the virtual 69th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards on March 13, and then live-action sound mixing at the 58th annual Cinema Audio Society Awards at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.
Updated February 11: The sound Oscar nominees — “Belfast” (Focus Features), “Dune” (Warner Bros.), “No Time to Die” (MGM/UA), “West Side Story” (20th Century/Disney), and “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix) — provide a range of imaginative soundscapes that connect to the personal stories in fresh ways.
However, the sonic power and complexity of Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” is going to be hard to beat. Its great achievement is creating a grounded reality that is both innovative and believable. So, rather than relying on over-hyped sounds, the sound team conveyed an otherworldly palette that is hallucinatory yet gritty,...

Does the God account have roots in Sd-6?! We jest, but it might actually be the brainchild of an Alias alum, as seen in TVLine’s exclusive video from this Sunday’s God Friended Me (CBS, 8/7c).
In the above scene, Carl Lumbly, aka Sydney Bristow’s mentor Marcus Dixon, guest-stars as Alphonse, the man who owns the insurance company from which all of Miles’ friend suggestions are coming. Since Miles’ father saved Alphonse’s life in Vietnam, he’s in town for Arthur’s nuptials to Trish, giving Miles the perfect opportunity to question Al and prove that he...

Disney's live-action adaptation of the iconic Aladdin has a lot going for it, including an incredible cast and a magical soundtrack. With each new look at the film promising a plethora of delightful surprises, one thing we couldn't help but wonder is if those angelic vocals are really coming from Jasmine's actress, Naomi Scott.
The short answer - yes. The long answer - hell yes! Scott - who audiences may recognize from 2017's Power Rangers adaptation or even Disney Channel's underrated original movie Lemonade Mouth back in 2011 - does all of her own singing in the film, including a Jasmine-centric new song, "Speechless." The actress is actually an independent artist with two EPs under her belt, so she definitely knows a thing or two about singing.
And if that weren't impressive enough, Scott also revealed that she was actually singing live for certain segments of the film, while...

Sometimes, a season finale is so well done, it could hand itself to a series finale.
If I didn't know the series was renewed for a second season, I would have thought God Friended Me Season 1 Episode 20 was closing the book for us.
Or at least, closing the chapter of the God Account.
Though Miles, Cara and Rakesh always run into some troubles, everything always has a way of working itself out.
By the end of the hour, it truly felt like Miles' work with the God Account was done and Cara and Rakesh were starting their own journey independent of Miles.

That was a lot to take in.
Here's what we learned on God Friended Me Season 1 Episode 19: Simon Hayes isn't behind the God Account, Henry Chase is our number one suspect again, and Pria just deleted a project that could potentially help save the world from seismic catastrophes.
No big deal.
Oh, and Rakesh and Cara are both jobless.
As we inch towards the God Friended Me Season 1 finale, the stakes are getting higher.
Truthfully, I don't know why Rakesh, Miles and Cara were so adamant that Simon Hayes was behind the God Account.
Rakesh: Let me guess. During your interview with Simon Hayes, you decided to tell him things you couldn't possibly know unless you knew someone on the inside, someone who told you things in confidence and assumed that they'd never be repeated!
Cara: What happened?
Rakesh: What do you think happened? He accused me of being a spy and fired me!

God Friended Me is finally unmasking the elusive Henry Chase: Derek Luke (13 Reasons Why) will play the oft-mentioned but previously unseen reclusive hacking genius in the CBS drama’s Season 1 finale, TVLine has learned exclusively.
Henry is the former partner of Simon Hayes (guest star Adam Goldberg) and Pria Amar (guest star Parminder Nagra). “No one has seen or heard from him in 10 years,” showrunners Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt tell TVLine. “Along with Simon, he has been a lead suspect behind the God account. In our season finale, Miles, Cara and Rakesh finally come face-to-face with Henry in the most unexpected way.

If only all humans were as good as Miles.
Week by week, this series restores my faith in humanity.
Most of God Friended Me Season 1 Episode 17 focused on Miles' friend suggestion, Ben Evans, a homeless man whose run of bad luck was getting the best of him.
Every encounter Miles had with Ben and his son, Max, was more emotional than the next.
Since the creation of the God Account, Miles has helped a handful of people, but he was almost like a Guardian Angel to Max and Ben.

After a little nudge from Fliss and the Universe, Miles asked Cara out on a formal date.
The best part was that Miles had a redo of the first time he wanted to ask Cara out right before Eli showed up and rudely interrupted.

The God Account was working double duty on God Friended Me Season 1 Episode 14.
Miles' friend request Derrick, a pitcher gunning for the minors, reconnected him with a high school friend whom he had a falling out with.
It wasn't a coincidence that shortly after running into Cal he was sent over Derrick's name.
The God Account works in mysterious ways, but I believe we'll soon be finding out the method to the madness.
While every friend request teaches us a valuable lesson, I've found that requests that have a personal connection to Miles are often the strongest.
This lesson was about acceptance and more importantly, accepting decisions and moving forward.

God Friended Me still has several episodes to air — including a fresh installment tonight (CBS, 8/7c) — before it wraps up its freshman run. But given the show’s recent renewal, TVLine was already on the hunt for season finale scoop when we caught up with co-creator Steven Lilien.
Lucky for us, Lilien had some tantalizing teasers to share about Miles and Cara’s potential romance, as well as the God account mystery.

CBS and CBS All Access took their turns at the winter Television Critics Assn. press tour on Wednesday. Only two panels were devoted to new upcoming shows — including Super Bowl leadout competition show “World’s Best” and limited series “The Red Line” — while the rest featured returning series (including “Star Trek: Discovery”) teasing what’s yet to come.
Here are six things we learned from day 2 of TCA.
1. “The Red Line” Wants to Be “‘Parenthood’ Meets ‘The Wire'”
One of CBS’ upcoming new midseason shows is “The Red Line,” a limited series (named for Chicago’s red metro line) about the devastating aftermath of a police officer shooting an unarmed black doctor, produced in part by Ava Duvernay, Greg Berlanti, and Sarah Schechter. “I think by telling those incredibly emotional, human stories there is a very unique window through which we can examine larger institutions,” said executive producer Caitlin Parrish.

Adam Goldberg has been cast in recurring role as Simon Hayes, the techie billionaire Simon Hayes who may or may not be owner of the God Account on CBS series God Friended Me, Ep Bryan Wynbrandt announced Wednesday at TCA.
God Friended Me stars Brandon Micheal Hall as an outspoken atheist who receives a “friend” request on social media from “god” and, with “god’s” help gets involved in helping others around him.
Asked how long the show intended to tease the mystery behind God Account, Wynbrandt answered coyly that “Simon Hayes’s involvement in the God Account will be explained and end the season in a satisfactory manner.”
Asked whether the series will tackle abortion and gay marriage, Wynbrandt again deflected, saying “We’ll touch on” them as they “feel organic to storylines” but will not write “toward commentary.”

What started off as an overwhelming task for Miles and Cara on behalf of the God Account quickly became a lesson on the importance of a brother and sister's unbreakable bond.
And, as always, God Friended Me Season 1 Episode 13 placed a heavy emphasis on the importance of family and the sense of community.
There was thematic cohesion between Denise and William's relationship and Miles and Ali's.
Although Ali and Miles aren't at odds like Denise and Willam, Miles relied on his personal experiences to help them mend their relationship.
And when it came to his own sister, he needed a push from Cara to realize that something wasn't right.
Apartment fumigation is the go-to lie when you're running away from your problems and need a place to crash.
Ali: Speaking of Simon Hayes, have you heard from Pria?
Miles: No. And how do you know about her?
Ali: Because I listen to your podcast.

My head is spinning after trying to piece together who is running the God Account and why they chose Miles.
It's a good thing I don't have to go through any firewalls, mirrored phones, or invisible codes.
On the plus side, this show is really helping me brush up on my coding vocab.
As the mystery unravels, more questions are getting asked on God Friended Me Season 1 Episode 12.
Pria, you disappointed me.
I hoped she was going to be a genuine addition to the team and another source to help them locate Henry, but I was mistaken.
The moment Rakesh's computer crashed, I knew it wasn't a coincidence. Pria was acting shady, and she didn't seem surprised by the sudden black screen.
The trio seemed to trust her simply because she looked innocent, but I would imagine that someone that close to Henry would also be an expert hacker.

After his sweeping victory with “There Will Be Blood” in 2007, many thought Daniel Day-Lewis had reached his zenith. What could top that performance?
In 2012 he was given the title role in Steven Spielberg’s epic “Lincoln.” Once again he immersed himself in the role, spending an entire year on research of Abraham Lincoln alone. For this performance as America’s greatest statesmen, Day-Lewis became the first and only winner of three Best Actor Academy Awards, ranking behind only Katharine Hepburn for the most acting Oscar wins in a lead category (she has four).

Nominations have been announced for the 51st annual Cinema Audio Society Awards, and as ever with this group lately, there are a few surprises. For instance, "Unbroken" made the cut despite being mostly ignored by the guilds and industry groups so far, and Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" showed up as well. The biggest jaw-dropper might just be that after months of being the poster child for sound complaints, somehow, some way, "Interstellar" ended up in the mix (no pun intended). There are always one or two that drop out, however. Last year, for example, another Marvel movie — "Iron Man 3" — was chalked up here. But it fell out in favor of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" with the Academy. I find myself wondering if "The Battle of the Five Armies" could make the cut this year as it's even more of an action/sound film than the last.

The soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy set a record this year by becoming the first to top the charts without any new songs on it, and the album – Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 – has since been certified gold. Now director James Gunn, who selected the record's songs and even wrote them into the script, has shared a playlist for a new mixtape, Awesome Mix Volume Zero, which features music by more contemporary artists, like Andrew W.K., the Old 97's and Lyrics Born, than the Seventies-centric artists of its predecessor.

If you just can’t get enough of the Awesome Mixes from Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn has a special treat for you today – a new tape featuring fresh tracks that he used to keep extras hyped up between takes. Awesome Mix Volume 0 was played during the filming of the "Boot of Jemiah" sequence. Gunn explains the whole thing below: “On lighter days, our master soundman Simon Hayes would also play music on set between takes to keep people’s energy up. He did this while shooting the credit sequence in the Temple of Morag, and he also did it for the Boot of Jemiah, so we could keep the extras hyped and alive and feeling like they were in a bar atmosphere. Normally, by mid-November, we have a pretty good idea of many of the likely nominees in most of the crafts categories. But in this year's race for Best Sound Mixing, I see things as extremely open — there's not a single film that strikes me as assured of a spot and more than a dozen appear to have very good chances. That makes for an exciting race. This category awards the overall mix of dialogue, music, effects and "everything else" into a film's soundtrack. This is different than sound editing, which recognizes the creation and editing of artificial sound effects. Being a leading Best Picture contender can certainly help a film's chances in mixing (seen in "The Social Network," "The King's Speech" and "Moneyball" in recent years), as can being a war film, a musical or a respected (or even not-so-respected) blockbuster. There are also certain mixers who score very regularly indeed.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed its 276-member-strong class of 2013.
The list, published by The Hollywood Reporter, includes actors, cinematographers, designers, directors, documentarians, executives, film editors, makeup artists and hairstylists, "members-at-large," musicians, producers, PR folks, short filmmakers and animators, sound technicians, visual effects artists, and writers.
Jason Bateman, Rosario Dawson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Milla Jovovich, Lucy Liu, Jennifer Lopez, Emily Mortimer, Sandra Oh, Jason Schwartzman, and Michael Peña are among the roster of actors, while "The Heat" and "Bridesmaids" helmer Paul Feig made the directors' cut.
"We did not change our criteria at all," says Academy president Hawk Koch of this year's larger-than-usual class. "Yes, this year there is a tremendous amount of women, a tremendous amount of people of color, people from all walks of life. This year, we asked the branches to look at everybody who wasn't in the Academy but who deserved to be.

This is a double-milestone year for Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, heads of UK studio Working Title Films. Not only is it 30 years since the company.s inception, 2013 marks 21 years since Fellner joined original cofounder Bevan at the helm.
Surely that would be cause for a celebration. In truth the two affable producers haven.t given it much thought. .We were thinking about having dinner with you,. jokes Fellner. A beat, then: .Yeah we probably should do something to celebrate..
.It.s not only us either,. adds Bevan. .There is a core group of people who have worked together for a long time. It is very unusual in the film industry..
He believes the reasons for this longevity are largely geographical. .One is that we.re based in the UK, and there aren.t many other games in town. The other is, we.re based in the UK! If you...
