Exclusive: The Gotham Group has launched an Nft-focused Emerging Technologies department, with the Hollywood management and production company tapping longtime manager Matt Shichtman to run it, while elevating him to partner.
The division already has a first project, with production underway on the adult animated series Alien to Me. It will be fully Web3 with only those that purchase NFTs getting access to the series, which hails from Shichtman-repped comedian and digital artist Connor Kerrigan and Melbourne-based animation studio Pixel’s Andrew Goldsmith and Monique Mulcahy.
“While studios have had considerable success over the past decade consolidating market power, Web3 has moved swiftly in the opposite direction, decentralizing networks, building grassroots communities, increasing transaction speeds, decreasing fees, and pushing towards carbon neutrality, a goal many blockchains have now achieved,” Shichtman said. “With over $25 billion in Nft sales in 2021, we couldn’t be more excited to leverage the power this new...

No stranger to controversy, Sarah Silverman loves to ask the tough questions, but this time she may have gone too far. In her new animated adult comedy, Silverman plays an elf who longs to become the next Santa Claus, begging the question: Could the world ever accept a female Santa? Silverman stars opposite Seth Rogen as the portly Saint Nicholas, and the zippy new trailer offers a glimpse of this dynamic duo in action, as well as plenty of other comedy favorites in quippy voice roles.
Beginning with the logline “out with the old, in with the elf — it’s time for the North Pole boys’ club to get a little more inclusive,” the new HBO Max series launched a trailer today just in time for some provocative holiday discussion ahead of the series’ release next week. Silverman plays a purple elf named Candy Smalls, “the highest-ranking female elf in the North Pole.

Amazon Prime Video announced the upcoming series “As We See It” will premiere all eight episodes on Jan. 21, 2022 and released a trailer for it.
The series follows 20-something roommates — Jack (Rick Glassman), Harrison (Albert Rutecki) and Violet (Sue Ann Pien), who are on the autism spectrum — as they strive to get jobs, make friends and fall in love. The trailer features each of the roommates tackling their goals, with the help of family and friends along the way. “I think you are such a beautiful person that you shouldn’t have to hide who you are,” says their aide Mandy (Sosie Bacon) to Jack. “That makes me want to throw up,” he responds.
The series also stars Chris Pang as Violet’s brother Van and Joe Mantegna as Jack’s father Lou. Writer Jason Katim executive produces with Jeni Mulein, Danna Stern, Dana Idisis, Yuval Shafferman and Udi Segal. Jesse Peretz...

Distributor Neon has scooped up North American rights to a new movie from “Anomalisa” director Duke Johnson. Titled “The Actor,” the film is being billed as a noir and will star Ryan Gosling. It’s based on the bestselling novel “Memory” by Donald E. Westlake, and Charlie Kaufman (who co-directed “Anomalisa” with Johnson) is also on board as an executive producer. According to Deadline, the buy was in the seven-figure range.
Here’s the synopsis from Neon: “Stranded in 1950s Ohio after a brutal attack, actor Paul Cole (Gosling), suffering from severe memory loss, struggles to find his way back to his life in New York and reclaim what he has lost. ‘The Actor’ follows a thrilling journey we must all make, to find home, to find love and ultimately to find ourselves.”

After producing Charlie Kaufman’s stop-motion “Anomalisa” feature, Rosa Tran couldn’t resist overseeing the brief, hand-drawn excursions for his surreal road trip movie, “I’m Thinking of Ending Things.” They consisted of the creepy black-and-white Tulsey Town ice cream commercial and the painterly-looking, glowing pig (voiced by Oliver Platt) that follows a naked high school janitor (Guy Boyd) during a live-action sequence.
Good thing Tran had plenty of context and reference material to draw on: she didn’t have time to read Kaufman’s mind-bending script (freely adapted from Iain Reid’s provocative 2016 novel). Tran was glad she had a baseline for how to work with Kaufman. “He talked about this naked janitor and what he was going through as he was hallucinating,” said Tran, who is currently working on Season 3 of the 2D-animated “Final Space” series for TBS and prepping Seth Rogen’s stop-motion “Santa Inc.” for HBO Max.

The emergence of festivals as a launching pad for television is relatively new, but Scad aTVfest, an annual celebration of the small screen, has its place as an early pioneer. The students of Scad, the art and design university founded in Savannah, Georgia, are helping shape a festival that draws its success not from just its featured programming, but from the people who actually attend the festival.
Founded six years ago, the three-day event has become a launching pad for acclaimed series like Fox’s “Empire” and ABC’s “American Crime.” This year brought the creators of shows like “The Chi,” “Mozart in the Jungle,” “Black Lightning,” and more to Atlanta.

One of movie fans favorite events of Oscar Week was held Thursday evening at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre, as the Academy held the eighth annual event celebrating the nominees for Best Animated Feature Film.
The evening featured clips from each film, followed by an onstage discussion with each group of nominated filmmakers.
This year’s eclectic mix – Anomalisa, Boy and the World, Inside Out, Shaun the Sheep Movie and When Marnie Was There – are as international as they are distinct.
Employing a stunning variety of animation techniques, the nominees explored a wide range of topics, including existential despair, devastation of natural resources, learning to handle emotion, the value of friendship and surviving the difficulties of adolescence.
This year, members were able to stream the movies and voting came from all over the world.
The evening’s hosts were Don Hall, Chris Williams, Roy Conli, last year’s Oscar winning team from Big Hero 6.

“Charlie Kaufman told us if we could get the money we could do it,” says Rosa Tran, producer of the Oscar-nominated animation Anomalisa. The project, which adapted Kaufman’s 2005 stage play into a stop-motion animated feature about a customer service speaker who falls into a eerie routine where everyone looks and sounds the same until he meets a woman that changes him, had humble beginnings and was almost a short film. Tran has helped usher the project from the very start when it was just co-director Duke Johnson and herself working to make a Kickstarter project video using a rented studio and old puppets.
“We were working together at Starburns Industries and wondering, ‘what’s the next project?’” recalled Tran. “Duke got a hold of [Kaufman’s] script from Dino [Stamatopoulos] and immediately wanted to make it.” When they initially pitched the project at various studios they were either rejected or told to...

When it comes to this year’s Academy Awards, no word is more buzzworthy than “diversity”. For the second year in a row the Oscars have nominated only white actors in their four main acting categories, sparking backlash and, as a result, inciting the Academy to announce new changes to tackle its “diversity problem”.
Amidst another year of #OscarsSoWhite trending on Twitter, however, the fact that 2015 has been an exceptionally strong year for women has been largely overlooked. Three of this year’s best picture nominees (Brooklyn, Room, Mad Max: Fury Road) are female-centric and feature strong female protagonists in the center of the action. In fact, even outside of those films and their performances, a number of women are nominated for best picture as producers, as well. Kristie Macosko Krieger is nominated for Bridge of Spies, Blye Pagon Faust is nominated for Spotlight, Dede Gardner...

Folks, we have a new frontrunner in Best Picture. Over the weekend, the 27th annual Producers Guild Awards were given out and The Big Short pulled the upset, taking the illustrious Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures. The Producers Guild of America (or PGA) are the best guild when it comes to forecasting Oscar, so the odds now favor the Academy Awards citing The Big Short in Picture, as opposed to Spotlight, the previous frontrunner. It’s a bit of a surprise, but perhaps one we should have seen coming, frankly. The more you think about it, the more sense it makes. Basically, if you go by PGA history, the winner here is what wins with Oscar. You can make the case even that not only has The Big Short now locked this up, but Amy has done the same in Best Documentary Feature and...

The Producers Guild of America announced on Tuesday its slate of nominees for the best films of 2015, and once again, this awards season is proving divisive, based on the eclectic mix of movies recognized by the guild -- and those that were surprisingly snubbed.
Unexpected honorees included "Ex Machina" and "Sicario," two films released earlier this year to critical acclaim, but which have been absent from most awards season chatter until now. Other populist fare represented on the PGA's nomination slate included the hit "Straight Outta Compton," as well as apocalyptic flick "Mad Max: Fury Road," which is proving itself a strong contender to muscle its way into a Best Picture Oscar nomination as it continues to snatch statuettes and nominations.
As with most awards, there were bound to be some glaring omissions, but the biggest one of all may be "Carol," which failed to earn one of the PGA's 10 Best Film slots,...

Denis Villeneuve’s cartel thriller Sicario received timely awards attention in The Producers Guild Of America’s (PGA) theatrical motion picture nominations on Tuesday while Carol and Star Wars: The Force Awakens failed to make the cut.
The PGA’s motion picture selections are a strong harbinger of the likely spread of best picture Oscar nominations announced on January 14 and as expected the likes of Spotlight, The Revenant and The Martian are in the mix.
However the omission of two largely fancied films will dampen spirits among their campaign teams and casts serious doubt on their Academy Awards prospects given the significant constituency of Academy voters who are producers.
In the last decade, eight winners of the PGA’s Darryl F Zanuck Award have gone on to claim the best picture Oscar including Birdman last year. While films that miss out on PGA nods can earn Academy Award nominations, historically their chances of winning the Oscar are very...

Mild-mannered Charlie Kaufman has written some of the loopiest screenplays of the past 20 years, including Being John Malkovich (1999), Adaptation (2002), and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004): films about mind control, writing, and erased memories that also hammer out fundamental truths about love and human identity. But Kaufman hasn't released a movie since his divisive 2009 directorial debut, Synecdoche, New York. His potential followup film, Frank or Francis — a musical that he says is about the Academy Awards, a robotic screenwriting head, and "this unbridled and anonymous anger on the Internet...

Todd Haynes is in the running for best director and both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are in contention for best female lead alongside Room’s Brie Larson as Carol earned six 2016 Film Independent Spirit Award nominations in Los Angeles on Tuesday.Scroll down for full list of nominations
Close behind were Spotlight and Beasts Of No Nation on five apiece, followed by indie darling Tangerine and Anomalisa on four each.
Not even a glitch that saw the list of nominees temporarily appear on the Film Independent website prior to the official announcement could spoil what turned out by and large to be a recognition of independent film in its myriad forms.
Besides the more predictable contenders like Carol, Spotlight and Room, there was plenty of love for Tangerine, shot on an iPhone, and Beasts Of No Nation from Netflix, whose day-and-date release (and what that portends) infuriated large swathes of the exhibition sector but has clearly...

It's a film that blends a surprising realism with a surreal sense of reality falling apart, one herky-jerky movement at a time. Its hero — if you could call the fucked-up pop-psychology author at its center a "hero" — is a middle-aged man with a sagging body who drinks too much, booty-calls up old flames and wears his neuroses on his tattered blazer's sleeve. There's explicit sex, profound sadness, jokes about the Cincinnati Zoo and hotel-door keycards, heartbreak, hilarity, and a half-naked Japanese automaton that both sings and spits out bodily fluids.
