The Captain (Hoa Xuande) is our guide through both Viet Thanh Nguyen’s novel and the HBO limited series version of “The Sympathizer,” but he is also a mystery — most especially to himself. A communist spy who is pulled irresistibly towards the height of Western decadence (Los Angeles in the late ’70s) and depravity (a film set in the late ’70s), the goal of the show is to mirror Nguyen’s prose and give the viewer a visceral sense of The Captain’s alienation.
While the flashiest choice “The Sympathizer” makes is Robert Downey Jr. playing all the significant Western figures who attempt to influence The Captain, there are also smaller, subtler tortures within the show’s imagery itself. The cinematography (by “Decision To Leave” maestro Kim Ji-yong and “The Hurt Locker” veteran Barry Ackroyd) continually puts pressure on The Captain through a sense of heat, sickly light, and eyes just beyond the frame.

Gone are the days when K-dramas almost exclusively meant love stories, period pieces and family dramas. Today, South Korea produces some of the most chilling and outrageously violent TV shows you’ll ever see—while also continuing to release the more traditional, wholesome fare that longtime K-drama fans fell in love with years ago.
The diversification of genres in recent years can largely be attributed to the rise of global streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+. In the past, most K-dramas were aired on broadcast TV, which comes with certain guidelines around what can and cannot be shown. By contrast, streamers aren’t bound by such rules around content.
The result? More extreme and graphic K-dramas, with Korean original series on Ott services like Netflix, often featuring plenty of gore and violence, and sometimes some sex and nudity as well. This year saw a host of Korean thrillers and horror series,...

With Nam Joo-Hyuk enlisted in the military, we were under the impression that we’d have to wait two whole years to see him again, but here we have a new TV show with the actor as the leading man. The actor is known for his slice-of-life roles that are both adorable and emotional, and he does a fantastic job of balancing pain and humor that really makes you root for him, whatever the role may demand. The actor’s last show was Twenty-Five Twenty-One, which was widely beloved, even though the ending received a lot of backlash for being too realistic. Vigilante will see the mostly romantic actor in a completely new light, and we’re excited to see him try something new. The show is based on a webtoon of the same name and follows a very “Batman” tale, where a young man sets out to take revenge...

Director Kim Ki-yeol (Song Kang-ho) only needs two more days of reshoots to craft a new ending to his latest film, and it will no longer be the trashy potboiler everyone thought he was making. It will be, he declares frequently “A masterpiece!” Director Kim Jee-woon does not seem to harbor similar aspirations for his meta-movie “Cobweb” – his loosest, least substantial and most slapdash film in quite some time – though safe to say that the gulf between it and masterpiece status is a little wider than a two-day reshoot could possibly bridge. A film containing another film; a filmmaker referring to the trials of a filmmaker: it’s a movie of many layers, all of them garish and goofy, none of them great.
That’s an assessment that would no doubt cut Ki-yeol to the quick, because, as played with typically raffish charm by “Parasite”‘s Song Kang-ho, he certainly dreams of greatness,...

Today's Oscar nominations announcement brought an end to months of speculation among film fans and, of course, the start of an even more contentious period leading up to the actual ceremony itself. Naturally, that's all part of the fun surrounding this time of year, but one can't completely deny the reality that the Oscars truly mean something important ... even if its origins point toward a much different conclusion. Smaller movies that otherwise might've flown under the radar suddenly enjoy a much brighter spotlight. In a refreshing break from gatekeeping norms, casual audiences are invited to join in on the kinds of debates and celebrations that the average /Film reader seeks out on a daily basis. Look no further than the box office success that followed "Parasite" after winning Best Picture in 2020. And yet, just one glaring omission is enough to put a damper on things.

“Tár” was named Best Picture, its titular lead Cate Blanchett was honored as Best Actress and Colin Farrell was voted Best Actor this weekend by the National Society of Film Critics at its 57th annual awards. The wins for “Tár” and Blanchett gave the film and its star a rare trifecta as both earned wins late last year from the New York Film Critics Circle and Los Angeles Film Critics Association in addition to the Nsfc. Also earning a clean sweep of the three prestigious critics honors was Ke Huy Kwan, who pulled off the hat trick as Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Farrell, meanwhile, won Best Actor for his star turns in both “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “After Yang.” Farrell’s “Banshees” co-star Kerry Condon took home the prize for Best Supporting Actress.

The National Society of Film Critics convened in New York and Los Angeles on Saturday to vote on their annual film awards, with some of the top prizes going to “TÁR” and “The Banshees of Inisherin.” Todd Field’s classical music saga won Best Picture, Best Actress for Cate Blanchett, and Best Screenplay for Field himself. “Banshees” took home Best Actor for Colin Farrell while Kerry Condon won Best Supporting Actress. Both films were already expected to be Oscar frontrunners, but today’s vote certainly helped their cause.
Another film to notch a major win, albeit a more unexpected one, was “Aftersun,” as Charlotte Wells won Best Director for her debut feature.
Per usual, voting was being conducted via a weighted ballot system. In each category, critics submitted ballots containing their top three picks. Their first choice received three points, their second received two, and their third choice received a single point.

Park Chan-wook sees himself first and foremost as a storyteller, and as such his films masterfully marry striking visuals with twisty narratives that befuddle audience expectations. But, understanding character at the center of all he does, he admits a preference for the influence of detective and spy novels over certain genres that he feels might place too much of an emphasis on plot machinations.
With Decision to Leave, Park leaves behind the ultra-violence interwoven into his Vengeance trilogy along with the sex that accompanied 2016’s The Handmaiden. Instead, Park offers up an intoxicating romance between Detective Hae-jun (Park Hae-il) and widow Seo-rae (Tang Wei). Key to their dynamic is Hae-jun’s incessant surveillance of Seo-rae, which continues even after she’s been cleared as an official suspect in the death of her husband. There is no greater time to kick this article into life for 2013 than with the release of the year’s first English language debut from a Korean director. That director is Kim Jee Woon and that film in question is the Last Stand, his English language debut and even more inexplicably Arnie’s return to action cinema (ignore the inert expendables 2). As part of our look at Kim Jee Woon, we shall be breaking his catalogue into three parts. This is the first part in which I will be covering his two breakout films, action thriller a bittersweet life, and the vastly superior (to its genre kin) a tale of two sisters. After that, it’s the stabby violence of I saw a devil and the western cool of the good, the bad and the weird. After which we close out with the quiet family (later ‘remade’ by Takashi Miike...
