‘Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.’
The box office results for the Australian films and feature docs released in cinemas this year underline yet again the deep polarisation in the indie film market between the higher earners and the also-rans.
The top five titles – Wayne Blair’s Top End Wedding, Shawn Seet’s Storm Boy, Anthony Marais’ Hotel Mumbai, Damon Gameau’s 2040 and Richard Lowenstein’s Mystify: Michael Hutchence – accounted for $15.8 million or 93 per cent of the Oz releases’ takings.
The Aussie films plus holdovers racked up nearly $17 million through the end of July, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.
That’s a long way below the $40.6 million generated in the same period last year, led by Peter Rabbit’s $26.6 million, Breath’s $4.4 million (finishing with $4.6 million) and Sweet Country’s $2 million.

Writer-director Imogen Thomas’ debut feature “Emu Runner” has and probably will play in designated family-themed strands of film festivals, and given its story of a 9-year-old Aboriginal girl who deals with grief in the wake of her mother’s death by bonding with a lone female representative of Australia’s largest native bird species, this programming strategy is to be expected. Yet adult audiences who bypass this serene and finely-detailed coming-of-age tale do so at their own risk, as Thomas has made a deep, rich meditation on family, community, country and racial tensions that strides well beyond its girl-meets-bird logline. Flightless the Dromaius novaehollandiae may be, but “Emu Runner” soars.

Australians are making more films than ever before. So why is it so hard to find them?
In the Sydney writer and director Imogen Thomas’s feature film Emu Runner, audiences see the world through the eyes of an Indigenous girl, Gem Daniels. The nine-year-old Ngemba girl idolises her mother, who knows all about country: the animals, the trees, the stars. When her mum unexpectedly dies, Gem bonds with her totem animal, a wild emu.
The film has achieved much with materially little, built on an “ultra-low budget”, says Thomas, including two crowdfunding campaigns and “the goodwill of many people”. Featuring the debut performance of Rhae-Kye Waites, who was 11 at the time the film was made, alongside the well-known actor Wayne Blair as her father, Emu Runner was shot on location at Brewarrina in north-western New South Wales.

Ryan Giggs's affair scandal has reportedly cost him an estimated £1.5m. The High Court yesterday threw out a damages claim brought by the Manchester United midfielder against The Sun newspaper for printing the story. The ruling leaves Giggs facing a huge legal bill following ten months of attempting to keep details of his love life private. "It's (more)...

Giggs has admitted for the first time that he sought an injunction last April against The Sun newspaper over an alleged affair, believed to be with former Big Brother contestant Imogen Thomas. His lawyer Hugh Tomlinson QC has told the High Court that Giggs has allowed the lifting of the anonymity of his name as part of the injunction.
Meanwhile Giggs is seeking damages against The Sun for the distress caused by the article, alleging a breach of privacy by their actions for the repeated publications of his name in regards to the alleged affair after his name was leaked in other newspapers and on the internet. A new survey suggests that two of the people the Celebrity Big Brother house this year are Imogen Thomas and Katie Price.
Imogen shot to fame on the 2003 normal Big Brother series on Channel 4 and hit the headlines again this year, when she was revealed to be having an affair with married football player Ryan Giggs.
Katie Price is no stranger to reality TV either, having her own fly on the wall series on Sky Living and having previously starred in I’m A Celebrity…..Get Me Out Of Here, twice.
A poll conducted by MyVoucherCodes shows that some people (some deluded people we like to think!) think both women would spice up the new series of the show, when it launches on Channel 5 this month, along with other stars including Ryan Giggs, Pippa Middleton and Ashley Cole.
Towie star Lauren Goodger is also named in the top ten...

This week has seen yet another watershed moment in the often unhappy relationship between fame and social networking, as Newcastle United footballer Joey Barton supposedly tweeted his way to the effective cancellation of his contract at the club (though he will continue, he is available on a free transfer). And given the role that Barton’s tweeting – along with club-fellow Jose Enrique, who was last week fined £100k (two weeks wages) for comments he made on the site – had in his new-found employment freedom, I thought it appropriate to have a look at other scandals that have hit the social networking site since it’s grand opening in July 2006.
