The main character from Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball series, Goku, has been voiced by Masako Nozawa since the series began in 1989. To this day, she has been portraying the role of the Saiyan protagonist, and not only that, but she has also played the role of all the children of Goku and even his father, Bardock.

While it might seem like Ghost Stories was only acting on the emerging J-Horror trend, this 2000 anime was in fact another adaptation of Tōru Tsunemitsu’s popular series of children’s books. After four live-action films based on the teacher-turned-author’s books, animation was the obvious next step. The anime — technically the second after a standalone ’96 Ova — has since gone on to become a favorite among Western audiences, although not for reasons the Japanese showrunners could have expected. No, this series is best remembered for its off-the-wall English adaptation that many fans liken to South Park.
Admittedly, Ghost Stories didn’t leave a big mark upon and after its initial release (other than a controversy regarding the ultimately unaired Kuchisake-onna episode). In its defense, though, many anime back then had a hard time standing out or living up to new expectations. As a reminder, that previous decade gave rise to...

The German folklore of Dr. Faust has inspired a number of classic tales, notably legendary playwright Christopher Marlowe’s tragedy “Doctor Faustus”. The literary piece was a modernized morality play in essence, which played an instrumental role in popularizing the thematic significance of the story—the binary of good and evil instincts and the complexities of human nature showcased through supernatural elements of occultism. Shigeru Mizuki’s iconic manga Akuma Kun revolves around the themes explored in Marlowe’s play and additionally incorporates a narrative that includes elements of the diverse world mythology as well. The anime adaptation of its first volume, which was released in the late 1980s, garnered a massive fan following among children, and a continuation of the series as a part of the 100th birth anniversary celebration of the mangaka has recently been released on Netflix.

Akuma Kun is an anime series directed by Junichi Sato, and Fumitoshi Oizaki. The series is set to be released on November 9 on Netflix. It’s based on the manga by Shigeru Mizuki.
If you’re in the mood for a enjoyable Japanese animated series with a “retro” vibe, then you’re in luck because here comes Akuma Kun. He’s not the friendliest or funniest guy, but that’s why he’s quite amusing.
He has come to Earth to confront demons through pentagrams, curses, and more, but neither the demons nor society will make it easy for him or his assistant, Mephistopheles, who complains all day long.
This is a very entertaining series featuring the star Yuki Kaji, a true gem in Japanese voice acting who once again showcases his talent and versatility.

We all have expectations for certain kinds of stories – a romance will have two characters fall in love and get together by the end, a mystery will have at least one murder to be solved, an epic fantasy will have un’usual apo’strophes in the middle of words.
The first expectation is that they will be stories, formed into a narrative with beginning and end, and preferably a middle as well. But that is not always true.
Tono Monogatari is a collection of folktales, in the first instance. An amateur folklorist collected them, a hundred-plus years ago, mostly from one tale-teller in one Japanese region, gathering all the bits of lore that one guy could tell him about the yokai and kami of the area.
And a lot of of them are not stories. There’s some “oh, yeah, one time this guy saw something!” or “and he was walking,...

Thanks to the internet and the growth of gaming as a general cultural phenomenon, audiences are now more familiar with the concept of localisation: the process of altering a videogame for a specific marketplace. Sometimes, these changes can be as subtle as altering lines of dialogue so they make sense in a given country - an everyday phrase in Japan would likely mean nothing to UK gamers if translated literally, for example - to fairly drastic changes to a game’s graphics.

The battle between the yokai and the new supernatural group of Emi, Nikaido, Shirai, Ayane and Rori is just heating up. The young group is still reeling from the battle that took place in the last volume of Wayward and starts to go in a very big direction by the end of this issue. From the looks of it, the conflict between the yokai and the newer generation of supernatural individuals has only just begun and is about to blow into an all out war.
The really great thing about what the creative team of Wayward continues to do is the level of respect and detail that is taken into account when setting a title like this in Japan.

Now this is a piece of news that brings a tear to an eye (and not ironically, sarcastically or in any bad way speaking) – the Japanese government announced anime director Hayao Miyazaki as one of this year’s 15 winners of the Person of Cultural Merit honor on Tuesday.
Hayao Miyazaki is best known for his animated films produced under Studio Ghibli, such as Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Ponyo. He is now deep in production of his latest work, an anime “with lots of airplanes” and a projected 2013 release date.
The Japanese government awards the cultural honor every November to people who contributed to Japanese culture for many years (something similar to an Award for lifetime achievement). The winners of The Order of Cultural Merit, highest order, are decorated by the Emperor himself in the Imperial Palace on November 3 — a national holiday called Cultural Day. This year’s...

Pretty much the comic book Oscars, the 2012 nominations for the Eisner awards have been announced. There is quite are large showing from Marvel in the superhero department, not so much from DC. Surprising, considering the company’s high profile New 52 relaunch. Save for Jeff Lemire’s nomination for Best Writer, most of DC’s nomination are pre-relaunch, or from their Vertigo imprint which has been left untouched by the New 52. The nominations are usually as controversial as the Oscars, with books and whole companies being left out, much to fans, sometimes, anger and confusion.
A full list of the nominations are below, courtesy of Bleeding Cool, and the award will take place at this years San Diego Comic Con.
Best Short Story “A Brief History of the Art Form Known as Hortisculpture,” by Adrian Tomine, in Optic Nerve #12 (Drawn & Quarterly) “Harvest of Fear,” by Jim Woodring, in The Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horror #17 (Bongo) “The Phototaker,...

I’ve been looking for an excuse to feature this poster for some time but since I still haven’t found one, here it is anyway. The poster is for the 1968 Japanese horror film Yôkai hyaku monogatari, a.k.a. 100 Monsters, which was directed by Kimiyoshi Yasuda (1911-1983) as part of a trilogy that includes Spook Warfare (1968) and Along with Ghosts (1969) (equally outlandish posters for which can be seen below). I’ve never seen the film, but I’ve long been fascinated by Japanese ghost stories and especially by the rich invention and variety of the demons and spirits of Japanese folklore known as Yôkai.
Like the shape-shifting demons themselves, the representation of yôkai in popular Japanese culture has morphed constantly over the years. In the 18th century the ukiyo-e artist Toriyama Sekien catalogued the myriad species of yôkai from oral legend and even invented some of his own. In...

A trailer for Takuji Suzuki‘s adaptation of Gegege no Nyobo has been uploaded to the film’s official YouTube channel. The film is based on an autobiographical novel by Nunoe Mura, wife of “Gegege no Kitaro” creator Shigeru Mizuki, and comes on the heels of a TV drama based on the same work which is currently in the middle of its run on Nhk.
Like the drama, it covers the couple’s relationship as Mizuki, whose real name is Shigeru Mura, toiled in obscurity before finally becoming a famous manga writer after years of hard work. Back in June it was revealed that Kazue Fukiishi will play Nunoe and actor/playwright Kankuro Kudo will play Shigeru, taking over the roles played by Nao Matsushita and Osamu Mukai in the TV drama.
The film premiered at the Pia Film Festival on July 21, 2010 and will be publicly released by Phantom Film...

In mid-April, it was announced that an autobiographical novel by Nunoe Mura, wife of “Gegege no Kitaro” creator Shigeru Mizuki, would be released as a film shortly after a TV drama based on the same work aired on Nhk.
The film was directed by Takuji Suzuki. Like the drama, it covers the couple’s relationship as Mizuki, whose real name is Shigeru Mura, toiled in obscurity before finally becoming a famous manga writer after years of hard work. Fukiishi recently revealed on her blog that a private preview screening was held back on the 27th of last month with Mizuki and Mura in attendance. After the screening, Mura grabbed hold of her hand and thanked her for her portrayal.

TOKYO -- Japanese movie house Shochiku is teaming up with Hong Kong special effects experts Centro Digital Pictures to bring a classic animated ghost tale to life. Gegege no Kitaro was created by Shigeru Mizuki in 1954, with Kitaro -- a young specter who lost both parents at birth -- existing in both manga and animated form. "Live-action movie versions of comic book characters have proven to be very popular in Japan and around the world and Kitaro is also a classic which has a huge fan base spanning all ages and demographics," said Teruki Matsumoto, managing director of Shochiku's theatrical distribution unit.
