Samurai Warrior
Stars: Yuma Ishigaki, Suzunosuke | Directed by Kenichiro Nishiumi
During Japan’s Warring States Period many powerful feudal lords took it upon themselves to pillage neighbouring lands whenever the opportunity arose. As steps towards unifying the whole country began, battles unfolded and many men left the smaller villages to fight in the larger territories. Among those left behind to tend to the farmlands were groups of hoodlum youths, referred to as “Evil Little Devils”, who, dreaming of supplanting their superiors, spent much of their time brawling and “stealing” neighbouring villages.
In the small rural village of Kinugasa, three teenage farmhands, Ryu, Gon and Yonesuke, sought to break the monotony of their agricultural chores by training themselves in the Japanese martial arts, particularly swordsmanship, and employing their burgeoning skills in mock raids on the villages’ of their rivals. But their superiority in the relatively harmless arena of adolescent warfare becomes...

Director: Kenichiro Nishiumi. Review: Adam Wing. It’s that time of the month again. Don’t panic though; Seiji Chiba has nothing to do with this latest samurai offering, though perhaps on the surface, you’ll be forgiven for thinking he has. It’s the latest in a long line of action movies released by Mvm, known for mercilessly short running times and occasional moments of grandeur. Thankfully though, Samurai Warrior has a little more to offer than cave dwellings, tiresome exposition and low production values. Samurai Warrior is a coming of age drama, a love story and an action movie rolled into one – though that might be stretching it a little. It’s the latest release from maverick director Kenichiro Nishiumi - who has worked alongside the legend that is Takashi Miike - starring Yuma Ishigaki (13 Assassins) & Suzunosuke (Suicide Club). Three friends masquerade as Samurai warriors and hold the...

Read all about it! Seiji Chiba in ninja movie shocker! Before we start, I want to remind you of the last time I wrote about a Seiji Chiba movie. The film was called Rogue Ninja and the review went a little something like this. “For a film that clocks in at just over an hour, there’s a lot of exposition to wade through. The characters in Rogue Ninja sure like to talk, conspiring, deliberating, or just plain standing around putting the world to rights - you sometimes get the feeling that the world of Rogue Ninja is set inside a giant girl’s bathroom.” You wouldn’t believe how tempted I was to just copy and paste the review over. Then again, isn’t that kind of what I’m doing now? Wait, there’s more…The battle scenes are tightly choreographed - fast, fluid and energetic - but...

Two ninjas have been given the task of kidnapping women to be used for the pleasures of the lower ranks of their ninja clan. The idea of course is keep the army happy they will fight a good war. Writer-director Seiji Chiba sure loves ninjas, following his low budget epics “Rogue Ninja” and “Aliens vs. Ninja” with the imaginatively titled “Ninja Girl” (aka “The Kunoichi: Ninja Girl”). Certainly, it’s hard to fault the man for his dedication to the genre, and the film again sees him offering up his own skewed and slightly oddball take on the form, possibly taking another step along the road to producing the ultimate modern ninja opus. Working for once without his regular heroine Mika Hijii, Chiba teams with 19 year old real life karate sensation and the star of cult hits “Karate Girl” and “High-Kick Girl”, Rina Takeda, along with Kotono (“Mutant Girls Squad”), Mitsuki Koga (“Evil Ninja”) and Masanori Mimoto (“Aliens vs. Ninja”). The film is the latest of Chiba’s works to arrive on region 2 DVD, arriving in October via Mvm. As usual, the film is set back in 16th Century Japan,...

“Rogue Ninja” (aka “Fugitive Ninja”) is an earlier outing from “Aliens vs. Ninja” director Seiji Chiba, originally unleashed back in 2009 and now finding its way to DVD. Unsurprisingly, the film offers up very much the same brand of wild, low budget Japanese ninja mayhem, packing in as much martial arts action as possible into its short running time. The film also shares its protagonist with Chiba’s later effort in the formidable shape of actress Mika Hijii, who is fast emerging as one of the top Japanese genre heroines, with support from Izumi Masayuki (“Kamen Rider”) and idol Tatsumi Natsuko. Set in 16th Century Japan, the film takes place against a background of civil war, with the Iga ninja being ruled over by warlord Nobunaga Oda with an iron fist, keeping them in check with harsh laws and handing out executions at will. Mika Hijii plays Ukagami, the toughest female warrior of her clan,...

Director: Seiji Chiba. Review: Adam Wing. Limited locations, a blink and you’ll miss it screenplay, ninja assassins and mediocre action choreography – looks like Seiji Chiba’s back in town. With the exception of Alien Vs Ninja, which benefited from a ridiculous concept and hilarious rubber costumes, Seiji Chiba has done very little to suggest any kind of future in the world of filmmaking. His films rarely make it past the hour mark, and that’s one of the few positives to emerge from his sorry CV, but still he continues to churn out the same movie time and time again. Ninja Girl is the latest ‘film’ from writer/director Seiji Chiba, and it has but one trick up its well-worn sleeve. That would be 19-year-old karate sensation-turned-actress Rina Takeda (Karate Girl; High-Kick Girl), an ass-kicking ninja on hand to deliver a blast of lukewarm martial arts action. As the...

Director: Seiji Chiba. Review: Adam Wing. Seiji Chiba sure loves his ninja movies. The Kunoichi: Ninja Girl, Alien vs. Ninja, Evil Ninja - its safe to assume that he’s comfortable within the action genre. Fans on these shores are likely to be familiar with Alien vs. Ninja, an action spoof that was little more than a sixty-minute fight sequence. There was enough mutilation and mayhem to keep you from reaching for the remote control though, even if it lacked the invention of some of its siblings. Rogue Ninja lacks anything approaching comedy aliens, with Chiba instead choosing to take his latest foray incredibly seriously. It's the 16th Century, a period of civil war in Japan, and stuck right in the middle are the Iga ninja. Rather than stand firm against the Nobunaga Oda and the Koga ninja that have joined forces, the Iga turn on themselves, dispensing with...

The Film:
Seriously.
That’s the tag line. Simple, effective, true. If you’re still shaking your head, don’t worry, I was too. But don’t be so quick to dismiss it, especially if you love loud, silly, campy late night films, because if you vibe with this sucker in those terms, watch out! – AvN (Alien vs. Ninja) is a big, bloody, rubbery, blast. Showing no signs of pretentiousness like most modern attempts at making a “bad” movie, AvN is a lovable Mystery Science Theater 3000 movie if there ever was one.
I would have loved to be in on the pitch to the producers for this one. “Can we have some money for this project I have?” inquires director Seiji Chiba. The curious producers chime in: “What’s the movie about?” In an outgoing spurt Chiba says: “an alien falls to Earth during a blood feud between two rival ninja clans.

When it comes to Japanese girls spanking the living crap out of their cinematic enemies, nobody does it quite as effortlessly as Rina Takeda. In addition to the follow-up to her breakout film “High Kick Girl”, Takeda also has another action film ready to dazzle your senses. Seiji Chiba’s upcoming martial arts flick “Kunoichi” looks pretty swift, thanks in part to the assistance of action choreographer Kensuke Sonomura, who also hellped “Gantz” and “The Machine Girl” achieve a high level of on-screen madness. The trailer situated below is definitely promising, so expect yours truly to be all over it as soon as humanly possible. After all, I do have a weakness for such things. But first, a quick synopsis for enlightenment: It is the war-torn era where the Iga Ninja and Koga Ninja are in constant rivalry. Behind this, women have always suffered from oppression. Aspiring screenwriters, take note. To sell a spec script in Hollywood nowadays, you need only follow this simple three-step formula: 1. Base the story on an existing comic book 2. Come up with a catchy and/or ironic title 3. Add zombies It really is that simple. Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes production company is currently setting up a project called Zombies vs. Robots, based on an Idw comic by Ashley Wood and Chris Ryall. It may sound like it could be a sequel to Jon Favreau's upcoming Cowboys vs. Aliens, but the two are apparently unrelated. Sony Pictures has picked up the distribution rights after a bidding war with multiple studios. Hey, at least it's not another board game movie, right? The plot revolves around a young girl who is the last survivor on earth. A group of robots must protect her from roving zombies that are "intelligent and evolved." What remains...

While there aren't any horror releases by major studios this week, there is, however, one notable film that should make up for the drought we are having. It is a film that should be re-subtitled "Shock and Awe" as that was how our @Foywonder felt after viewing Birdemic: Shock and Terror.
Anyway, this avian midnight movie sensation is directed by James Nguyen and stars Alan Bagh, Whitney Moore, Janae Caster, Colton Osborne, and Adam Sessa plus five seconds of stock footage of Tippi Hedren from a previous film.
This week also brings us Psych: 9 from Ghost House Underground. This film is directed by Andrew Shortell and produced by Gareth Jones; it stars Sara Foster, Cary Elwes, Michael Biehn, and Gabriel Man. Rounding out the list are a wacky concept that has warrior creatures battling it out for our amusement and a fusion ghost story.

Director: Seiji Chiba. Review: Adam Wing. Some storylines are complicated affairs, but when it comes to the work of Sushi Typhoon, you’re pretty safe in thinking not so much. When a strange fireball crashes near their village, a mighty ninja clan goes to investigate and winds up in serious danger. Flanked by lightning-quick alien creatures, the ninjas struggle to find their enemies' weakness before they're all killed in gruesome fashion. That’s pretty much the entire plot of Seiji Chiba’s quirky Japanese offering, Alien vs. Predator gets a bloodthirsty makeover then – Japanese style. You already know if this is your kind of movie, it is called Alien vs. Ninja after all. The Sushi Typhoon isn’t exactly known for its big budget affairs, but you’re safe to expect an inventive, bloodthirsty, camp and comical night in. The film opens with a well-choreographed fight sequence between two ninja clans,...

Writer director Seiji Chiba gives fans of Asian exploitation cinema what they want with “Aliens vs. Ninja”, a film which pretty much delivers exactly as its title suggests, pitting monstrous extraterrestrials against ninjas back in feudal Japan. Having also been responsible for “Evil Ninja”, Chiba certainly knows his stuff, and the film has a fine pedigree, boasting action choreography by Yuji Shimomura (known for “Versus”, “Shinobi” and “Death Trance”) and Kensuke Sonomura (“The Machine Girl”, “Hard Revenge Milly: Bloody Battle”). Raising their swords against the ugly invaders are Masanori Mimoto, (“Evil Ninja”), Mika Hijii (also in recent Western martial arts outing “Ninja”), Shuuji Kashiwabara, (“The World Sinks Except Japan”), and Donpei Tsuchihira (“Memories of Matsuko”. Having whipped up a fair amount of fanboy furore on the festival circuit, including a highly successful screening at FrightFest in London, the film now arrives in a bare bones edition on region 2 DVD via Revolver Entertainment.

Alien vs. Ninja is that latest low-budget straight to DVD production from those purveyors of Ott filth Sushi Typhoon. Packed with the type of action, gore and frankly ridiculous ideas we’ve come to expect from the company, the film tells the story of a group of ninjas who witness a blazing fireball roaring across the sky before crashing to earth in the distant forest. Rushing to the scene to investigate, they are caught completely off guard when they discover and are besieged by a pack of brutal and extremely ravenous extra-terrestrials and their slimy offspring – unwelcome visitors who most definitely have not come in peace. Quickly realising their swords, knives and throwing stars are ineffective against these intergalactic predators, the fearless ninja find themselves facing their greatest challenge ever in a mammoth fight for survival.

19-year-old karate idol and actress Rina Takeda will be starring in Seiji Chiba’s upcoming action film Kunoichi, playing a female ninja who rescues kidnapped women. This marks her third starring film role since making her debut in 2009.
Takeda took up karate at age 10 and went on to win several championships in the following years. She first caught the eye of filmmaker Fuyuhiko Nishi while he was producing the 2008 film “Shaolin Girl”, starring Kou Shibasaki. In June of that year, he contacted her via her blog and soon began training her for theatrical combat. In 2009, she starred in Nishi’s film “High Kick Girl!” In 2010, she co-starred with fellow karate expert Hina Tobimatsu in “Kg: Karate Girl”.

If It Bleeds... Ninjas Can Kill It! What could be a better Christmas present for Brit fans of Japanese trash, gore horror than news that Seiji Chiba’s exploitation bloodbath Alien Vs. Ninja has just been given a UK release date, and it drops onto DVD there, near a full month before the U.S gets to see it. A Vs N promises non-stop martial arts mayhem, meets monster mash-up, with a liberal splattering of gore, furious fights and great stunt work. Does it deliver? Tick, tick, tick and…tick. Alien Vs. Ninja is released by Revolver Entertainment on Feb 7th in the UK, and by Funimation in the U.S on Feb 22nd.

Grimmupnorth 2010 is coming to Manchester for a second time this Halloween! Readers may remember last year’s coverage from the first Grimmfest last October ‘09. Well, we’re going back for more this year too. Festival director Simeon Halligan and his crew have spent all year finding some amazing new titles to screen at Manchester’s biggest horror film festival, including Evil: In The Time Of Heroes, which I missed at Eiff so am well up for seeing. There’s also the inventively named Canadian shocker, Dead Hooker In A Trunk, the Japanese genre mash-up Alien Vs Ninja, Thai thriller Slice, Zombie mock-u-mentary Reel Zombies and a horror doc featuring all kinds of industry insiders, The Splat Pack. There’s also a ton of activities and seminars for festival goers to participate in too. Personally I’m looking forward to the special screening for my favourite Argento film, Deep Red.

It’s always hard to review a film like Alien vs. Ninja (also known as AvN). Released by Nikkatsu as part of their Sushi Typhoon label and directed by Seiji Chiba, AvN is a high concept low brow genre film that pits Aliens against Ninjas (yes the plural is more appropriate). The film has aliens, the film has ninjas, they fight… It’s Alien vs. Ninja.
To be honest there really isn’t actually a lot more to the film than that and perhaps that’s okay, there doesn’t really need to be as long as it delivers on the premise in an entertaining and enjoyable way and luckily, it does that in spades.
The two heroic ninjas that are central to the group battling the aliens are Yamata (Masanori Mimoto) and Rin (Mika Hijii) who have something approaching chemistry but never really getting that close to it. Undoubtedly...

[With Seiji Chiba's Alien Versus Ninja screening as part of Toronto After Dark tonight, now seems a good time to revisit my earlier review from Fantasia. This film is a big bucket of fun, people. Don't miss it.]
Though the festival is still young and there are literally scores of films remaining to screen at the 2010 edition of Montreal's Fantasia Festival, if this morning's reaction to Seiji Chiba's Alien Versus Ninja is anything to judge by the festival may have already found its Audience Award winner. Know this: Any film that has a prayer of unseating AvN has a literal mountain of hooting, hollering, laughter, spontaneous waves of cheering and applause and other related expressions of joy to overcome. A party broke out in the Hall today and Alien Versus Ninja was the pretty girl everybody wanted to take home.
Considering that the entire plot is summed up in the three world title I will leave any description of story or character entirely out of what follows. Instead, I present here a list of things that make Alien Versus Ninja such a resounding success.

Hey Gang! You've got to watch this incredibly awesome trailer for the Japanese film Alien Vs. Ninja! That's right, director Seiji Chiba has combined two of our favorite things and pitted them against each other in a battle of bloody death and carnage. The trailer for the film has got plenty of fun bloody visuals that is sure to get you excited to to see this movie.
Synopsis:
In medieval Japan, no one can hear you scream. And no one can prepare you for the arrival of a great big honking rubber alien who wants to party in space-invader style--meaning tearing off heads and ripping out intestines. This sick extraterrestrial freak even wants to impregnate our species with its hideous jelloid babies. It's unstoppable. It's unkillable. It's unbeatable! Almost--it's not ninja-proof.
Unfortunately the movie doesn't have a U.S. distributor yet, and it most likely never will. This is one...

Thanks to DVD and Blu-ray, Japanese cult cinema is bigger than ever here in America. Venerable Japanese studio Nikkatsu announced they were getting in on the action last November, when they unveiled their new Sushi Typhoon imprint. Designed to produce low-budget cult cinema for distribution in Japan and America (think movies like Tokyo Gore Police or Robo-Geisha and you're on the right track), the company has finally unveiled the official trailer for their first offering: Alien vs. Ninja.
The film follows a group of ninja warriors who encounter an enemy unlike any they've ever faced when an alien ship crash-lands in the nearby forest. The aliens (guys in slimy rubber suits ... ) decimate the clan -- who then vow to avenge their fallen comrades, even though their weapons are ineffective against the extra-terrestrials. What a conundrum.

Soon to have it's World Premiere as part of the New York Asian Film Festival - 6pm, July 3rd, at the Japan Society for those who want to be there - directors Seiji Chiba and Yuji Shimomura bring on the man-in-suit splatter with Alien Versus Ninja.
For the uninitiated, Chiba is a veteran director of numerous ninja films - most much more straight faced than this - while Shimomura was the action director on cult hit Versus and the director of Death Trance and the two combined their talents on what was the inaugural production of Nikkatsu's fledgling Sushi Typhoon cult film label. I had the chance to see this a couple nights ago and while I'll hold the review until the festival rolls around, it's big bags of fun featuring some very solid action choreography, loads of splatter effects and a whole lot of ninjas involved in hand to...

A trailer for Seiji Chiba‘s Evil Ninja recently popped up on YouTube. Like Chiba’s “Iga no Ran” series, the film stars Masashi Goda of the long-running TBS historical drama “Mito Komon” and Shuji Kashiwabara as members of the Iga ninja clan around the time of Oda Nobunaga’s final assault against them in 1581.
In this alternate version of history, the leader of the Iga ninja decides to employ an early form of bioterrorism by using a group of low-ranking ninja infected with a deadly disease against Oda’s Koga ninja allies.
Chiba recently directed the sci-fi/chanbara mashup AvN: Alien vs. Ninja for Nikkatsu’s Sushi Typhoon label, but it looks as though this one will be coming out first. It will begin screening at Shibuya Theater Tsutaya on June 19, 2010.

What does the world need in these troubled times? More movies about ninjas. Ninjas fighting aliens. Lucky for us, Japan is here to fill that need.
Seiji Chiba and Yuji Shimomura's Alien Versus Ninja is the first product of Nikkatsu's cult Sushi Typhoon label. All wrapped up now, it'll probably wait until after anthology project Mutant Girls Squad to be released in Japan but there's just no stopping the trailer love.

Nikkatsu’s new “extreme” film and DVD label Sushi Typhoon now has an official Facebook page with updates on their upcoming releases. First up, an English-subtitled trailer for Seiji Chiba‘s Alien vs. Ninja.
In the film, the Iga Ninja, led by Yamata, witness a giant ball of flame crash off in the distance. When they investigate the crash site, they’re attacked by vicious alien creatures with fangs and claws. Yamata and the few remaining survivors swear revenge on their mysterious attackers, but none of their traditional ninja weapons seem to have any effect.
Instead of trying to wedge directors into projects they’re not comfortable with, Sushi Typhoon seems to be letting them go with their strengths. Chiba has already directed a series of historical action movies involving the Iga Ninja including Tensho Iga no Ran (2005), Iga no Ran: Kosoku (2007), and Sengoku: Iga no Ran (2009).
