Mark Lanegan and Earth’s Dylan Carlson released their contribution to the ongoing Galaxie 500 tribute series with a cover of the dream-pop outfit’s 1990 song, “Summertime.”
The pair recorded the cover in a charmingly cluttered studio space; Carlson set a slightly quicker tempo than the original as he conjured the kind of hypnotic, fuzz-blasted guitar tone requisite for any proper Galaxie 500 cover. Accompanied by tambourines, Lanegan delivered the song with some sweet, no-frills vocals, letting the song’s story of young love settle in softly before hitting the little twist...

Lucinda Williams adds a touch of her native Louisiana grit to the Southern Gothic of Bobbie Gentry’s “Ode to Billie Joe,” in a version of the quintessentially mysterious tune that supplements Mercury Rev’s adventurous track-by-track re-imagining of Gentry’s largely forgotten 1968 sophomore album, The Delta Sweete.
Set within darkly atmospheric production elements, Williams’ vocal is tinged with pain and echoes with hints of anger and regret throughout, deepening the classic tune’s enigmatic nature. The song — and its phenomenal success on the pop chart at a time when...

Reclusive “Ode to Billie Joe” and “Fancy” songwriter Bobbie Gentry continues to inspire a new generation of artists including indie rockers Mercury Rev, who have debuted their uniquely psychedelic jazz rendition of the Mississippi legend’s swampy “Okolona River Bottom Band,” with vocal assistance from Norah Jones.
“Okolona” is the opening track on Mercury Rev’s forthcoming LP, The Delta Sweete Revisited, the Buffalo, New York band’s track-by-track recreation of Gentry’s sophomore LP, released 50 years ago next month. Coming on the heels of the singer-songwriter’s groundbreaking debut,...

A new song from Greensky Bluegrass, the title track of Kacey Musgraves’ Cma award-winning Golden Hour and a dancehall-ready entry from Mike and the Moonpies make up the songs you must hear this week.
Greensky Bluegrass, “All for Money”
The title track from Greensky Bluegrass’ upcoming seventh album, All for Money, kicks up some string-band dust for two spirited minutes, then dissolves into woozy, wobbly psychedelia. Co-produced by Jack White’s longtime bassist, this is the sound of a band firmly embracing its own weirdness.

Frances Bean Cobain stepped out for a rare public appearance on Sunday night to toast TV's finest! The daughter of Courtney Love and the late Kurt Cobain was snapped at HBO's 2015 Emmy After-Party in Los Angeles, sporting a black tank, matching trousers and a sheer lace jacket. She paired her monochromatic look with a cross necklace and a killer red lip. The 23-year-old star has been spotted at a few red carpet events in the last few months, while she was promoting her documentary, "Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck," which chronicled her famous father's rise and fall. Frances recently opened up about what she really thinks of Nirvana's music -- even confessing that she's not a fan of the dad's work. "I don't really like Nirvana that much [grins]," she told Rolling Stone in April. "Sorry, promotional people, Universal. I'm more into Mercury Rev, Oasis, Brian Jonestown Massacre [laughs]. The...

Musical taste trumps DNA for Frances Bean Cobain, because it turns out she doesn't like Nirvana -- and her feelings about her father aren't much better. Cobain told Rolling Stone she's just not much of a fan of Kurt Cobain's old band, instead preferring the likes of Mercury Rev, Oasis, and Brian Jonestown Massacre. Frances Bean (who only referred to her father by his first name) did single out the song "Dumb" ... describing it...

Frances Bean Cobain's getting extremely candid about her father, Kurt Cobain's death. In an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the Nirvana frontman's daughter chats with the mag about the new documentary she executive produced, "Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck," and shares some of her personal opinions about the iconic singer's struggles. Cobain -- who used to intern for the music mag when she was a teenager -- discusses what she thinks pushed her father over the line. "Kurt got to the point where he eventually had to sacrifice every bit of who he was to his art, because the world demanded it of him," Frances tells the mag. "I think that was one of the main triggers as to why he felt he didn't want to be here and everyone would be happier without him." The 27-year-old star was found dead at his home in Seattle, Washington...

Frances Bean Cobain, daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, doesn't give many interviews — and this is probably why. For many who grew up during their heyday, speaking negatively about Nirvana is considered blasphemous. But when you're the daughter of a grunge legend and pretty much rock royalty, you can say whatever you want and get away with it. In a new interview with Rolling Stone (where she once interned) to promote an upcoming HBO documentary about her dad — which she executive-produced — Frances Bean is doing just that: speaking openly about Nirvana, how it feels to be compared to Kurt, and her rocky relationship with her mother. No surprise, she won't fess up to being a fan of her dad's band: "I don't really like Nirvana that much [grins]. Sorry, promotional people, Universal. I'm more into Mercury Rev, Oasis, Brian Jonestown Massacre [laughs]. The grunge scene is not...

Despite sharing their name with the term celebrity journalists apply to anyone who's ever been in television or film, the band Stars has carved out a large following. Anyone familiar with the Canadian band's blend of soothing melodies and haunting lyrics knows why: There are simply very few acts with male and female vocalists as well-matched as Amy Millan and Torquil Campbell.
The music that Stars has been making over the past decade is spare and nimble, intimate yet incredibly tense. In interviews with The Huffington Post, Campbell and Millan described their sound and looked back over 10 years full of albums and tours.
"I think we're interested in space in music," Campbell said. "We're trying to make something that simultaneously feels cold and distant and intimate or secretive, like some secret you happen upon."

The Silent League's amorphous nature and malleable identity makes a record of covers and remixes by collaborators and admirers entirely fitting. Formed in Brooklyn in 2004 by then Mercury Rev keyboardist, Justin Russo, the band has included members of Arcade Fire, Beirut, Stars Like Fleas, and Bishop Allen among others.
Their latest release, "We Go Forward" is largely inspired by remixes from their 3rd album, "But You've Always Been The Caretaker" featuring newly remixed efforts of friends and allies like Neon Indian and Memory Tapes. There's also a couple covers -- The Chameleons' 80's classic, "Tears" and a superior variety of Broken Social Scene's "Texico Bitches."

"Not that I think the old way was boring, but to spend another two years with the same 13 songs, it's just like fuck," Flaming Lips frontman, Wayne Coyne told Rolling Stone. The band is looking for a different way to record their music in the new year and aim to release one new song each month, starting in late January -- though Coyne admits they may not have the first one ready by month's end.
"With this new thing, we're going to spend a lot of time recording at our houses or wherever we are at. We'll try to release a song a month and document the song in the making, whether it takes us three or five days or a week," he added. The band will be collecting in their original Oklahoma stomping grounds, working with founding member of Mercury Rev and longtime Lips producer, Dave Fridmann.

Sibling rivalry doesn't seem to be a phrase that exists between Damon Albarn and his sister, Jessica Albarn. The latter, an accomplished visual artist, recently released the children's book "The Boy In The Oak" to solid reviews, and it's already making the leap to a film adaptation with some pretty strong talent behind it. Jude Law has stepped up to narrate the forthcoming short film that will be directed by commercial helmer Luke Losey, who has also directed videos for Orbital and Mercury Rev. But the biggest coup? Jessica's brother Damon Albarn, who plays around in a couple of groups…...

If you should bump into Ok Go frontman Damian Kulash today (and if you're somewhere between Boulder, Colorado and Northfield, Minnesota, there's a distinct possibility that you might), give the dude a high five (though he'll probably appreciate it more if you do some sort of super-choreographed salute, as he's into that sort of thing). Why? Because the dude turns 35 years old today.
He'll be celebrating his birthday on the road with his band (they just kicked off a fresh tour) and basking in the glow of his group's tremendous year. Back in January, the band dropped their latest (and best) album Of the Blue Colour of the Sky, which was produced by David Fridmann (most notoriously the producer of the last few Flaming Lips albums but also the guy behind the boards for Mercury Rev and Sleater-Kinney's The Woods) and contains a giant batch of super-catchy, ultra-funky, delightfully psychedelic...

Hello from Seattle! So the last few days have been tiring and busy, a lot of driving. We played four nights ago in Paris at a beautiful Theatre called Marigny. Paris is a beautiful city; we got to walk around a bit. We saw the Eiffel Tower up close, which was amazing. The show went very well. The next morning we drove four hours to Dijon for our second to last show in Europe with Mercury Rev. Great show as well, though Dijon was a somewhat strange town.

Having long ago shaken most of the Flaming Lips comparisons, Mercury Rev's back-to-back salvo of Deserter's Songs (1998) and All Is Dream (2001) remains an impeccable A-side/B-side demonstration of how to turn a grandiose studio vision into something beautiful, then slightly harrowing. But 2005's The Secret Migration lost the grandeur amid weightless burbling, and the new Snowflake Midnight integrates all kinds of gimmickry good for press releases: Random-note generators and avant-garde patches punctuate the songs. The best is "People Are So Unpredictable," in which Jonathan Donahue's faux-naïve worldview is given grit by fierce backing: As he sings the title, pummeling drums accentuate it. That sense of drama is missing from the rest of the disc, which indulges in fussed-over backgrounds full of glitchy adornments, similarly admirable in their complex arrangements, but absolutely weightless. (An ill-advised spoken-word segment on "Runaway Raindrop" doesn't help, either.) At its best, Mercury Rev...
