Vampire Weekend are officially back with the announcement of their new album, Only God Was Above Us, out April 5th via Columbia Records.
Marking Vampire Weekend’s first full-length in five years, Only God Was Above Us clocks in at 10 tracks. Inspired by 20th-century New York City, the album was recorded in Manhattan, Los Angeles, London, and Tokyo, with vocalist/guitarist Ezra Koenig sharing production duties with longtime collaborator Ariel Rechtshaid. It was mixed by Dave Fridmann and mastered by Emily Lazar.
Koenig penned the majority of the lyrics to Only God Was Above Us in 2019-2020, and spent the next five years with bandmates Chris Baio and Chris Tomson fleshing out the lyrical and melodic structures. The album is described in a press release as “direct yet complex, showing the band at once at its grittiest, and also at its most beautiful and melodic.”

Mgmt have shared the video for their new song “Nothing to Declare,” the latest single off the duo’s upcoming album Loss of Life.
The Joey Frank-directed visual stars Inga Petry, a college student born with upper limb aplasia who uses social media to spread awareness for the disabled community. In the video, Petry travels to Paris, documenting an adventure that culminates with her witnessing the Venus de Milo in person.
“When I was first approached by Joey to do this project, it was the parallelism in his vision that first drew me in.

Mgmt have finally confirmed their next album. Titled Loss of Life, the band’s fifth full-length arrives on February 23rd via Mom + Pop. In anticipation, the first single, “Mother Nature,” is out now.
Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser co-produced Loss of Life along with Patrick Wimberly, while their longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann handled mixing. Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never), Brian Burton (Danger Mouse), and James Richardson provide additional production on “Dancing in Babylon” — which includes the first-ever feature on an Mgmt record, thanks to Christine and the Queens. Finally, Miles A. Robinson served as associate producer and engineer on the LP.
With acoustic guitar and relaxed vocals, “Mother Nature” feels a lot more grounded than the psychedelic singles that made Mgmt famous over a decade ago. In a statement, the duo said the song “outlines the archetypical Mgmt mythology of one hero attempting to get the other hero to come...

Deer Tick have announced their new album, Emotional Contracts, out June 16th as their debut on Ato Records. They’ve also expanded their 2023 tour (grab tickets here) and shared the lead single, “Forgiving Ties,” alongside album track “The Real Thing.”
Emotional Contracts was produced by Dave Fridmann, who is best known for his work with The Flaming Lips, Spoon, and Sleater-Kinney. The 10-track LP includes a feature from Steve Berlin of Los Lobos and background vocals from Courtney Marie Andrews, Vanessa Carlton, Kam Franklin, Angela Miller, and Sheree Smith.
In a statement, vocalist/guitarist John McCauley described letting loose during the recording process. “This time we wanted to see what it would feel like to let go a bit,” he said. “We figured that the songs were strong enough to stand on their own two feet, so whatever we put them through would just make them stronger and take us in some new direction.

Spoon have released a new song, “My Babe,” from their upcoming album, Lucifer on the Sofa, set to arrive Feb. 11 via Matador Records.
“My Babe” begins as a practically wistful ballad, but the song follows its plucky lead acoustic riff to a far punchier place that feels perfect for either an arena or a garage: “Oh, I would get locked up/Hold my breath, sing my heart out/Beat my chest for my babe,” wails Britt Daniel. “Let our hearts beat in time/Let the love go on and on now/My babe.

Scottish instrumental post-rockers Mogwai have announced their new album As the Love Continues by dropping the video for the LP’s first single “Dry Fantasy.”
For the album, the quartet reunited with long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann — their producer on 1999’s Come on Die Young, 2001’s Rock Action, and 2017 LP Every Country’s Sun — earlier this year. However, due to the pandemic, Mogwai recorded in Worcestershire, U.K., with Fridmann producing the sessions “separated by an ocean but appearing like an Orwellian oppressor over the sessions,” the band said.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions have sometimes meant big reunions with long-lost band members (see R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Eagles, Heart, et al) — and other times, no big reunion at all (Kiss, Guns N’ Roses). With this year marking the 25th anniversary of their debut (which we’re celebrating with our just-published feature on their origin story and more to come), Weezer will be eligible for the next class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In their 2000s heyday, Interpol came off as opaque and uncrackable, from their image (hip, handsome, glowering dudes in black suits, plus whatever Carlos D was doing) to the icy gloss of their music to their indifferent vibe in interviews. Another year, another move further away from caring about pop. Whether that's pop's fault or mine, I'm not sure. But there was still plenty of great new music released in 2015, and here, according to my idiosyncratic tastes, are the best albums, or at least my favorites.
1. Wire: Wire (Pink Flag)
This is said to be the first time that Bruce Gilbert's replacement, guitarist Matthew Simms, was heavily involved in the creation of a Wire album, and the result is...the closest Wire has ever come to sounding like a Colin Newman album. I exaggerate for effect, but only slightly: most everything thrums along smoothly and motorik-ly, he takes all the lead vocals (though Graham Lewis supposedly wrote many of the lyrics), and there are none of the post-punkier outbursts of the group's previous two reunion albums, though near the end of Wire, the one-two punch of "Split Your Ends" and "Octopus" come close.

Back when The Lord of the Rings movies were, like, the biggest things ever, we were treated to end credits music by both Enya, Annie Lennox and what I presume was a small boy with an extremely high voice. For The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, director Peter Jackson has gone with Neil Finn of Crowded House fame. So what did they come up with? “The Song Of The Lonely Mountain”, and you can listen to the track over at Rolling Stone.
Here’s what Finn had to say on the origins of the song:
“The Song Of The Lonely Mountain was developed from a dark and mysterious theme which the dwarves sing early in the movie. After some days of mining underground (actually, in Peter’s office) I emerged with the song, then set about recording it with my sons Elroy and Liam. Dave Fridmann came in at the end with a bold mix.

Peter Jackson has always ended his Middle Earth films with a great song that plays during the end credits. The song for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey comes from singer/songwriter Neil Finn of the New Zealand band Crowded House, and it's called "Song of the Lonely Mountain". I think the song turned out great! There's a lot of cool layers to it, it really captures the feel of Middle Earth, and the story of The Hobbit.

If there was one thing missing from last week's 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, it was the presence of Ok Go, who made arguably the most talked-about video of the past year with "This Too Shall Pass." Fully committed to the video form (and still with an exceptional album to promote), the band just unveiled their latest clip (which premiered on Monday's episode of "Ellen"). It's called "White Knuckles," and much like the rest of their videos, it totally rules.
In keeping with Ok Go tradition, the clip is shot entirely in one shot (or at least gives the illusion of a single shot). Unlike the "This Too Shall Pass" clip, the camera stays completely still while the band floats in and out of frame with the help of some furry friends. Yes, the band is accompanied by a team of dogs who run around, jump, pull off tricks and do complicated synchronized movements.

Here's what you need to know about the Flaming Lips' performance on Monday night (July 26) at Rumsey Playfield in New York City's Central Park: When the time came for the show to start, the members of the band not named Wayne Coyne emerged from behind a video screen on which was projected a kinetic technicolor nightmare of a woman laying back and spreading her legs, giving the illusion that the rest of the band was crawling out of her birth canal. It was a nod to the Lips' amazing 2009 album Embryonic, but it also offered up a fine introduction to a night of eye-popping visuals, brain-stretching jams and enough confetti to celebrate a Super Bowl victory.
"This night is f---ing perfect," Coyne announced at the top of the show following his now-customary climb over the audience in a giant inflatable hamster ball. He wasn't necessarily talking about the music but rather about the weather,...

HollywoodNews.com: Incubus’ frontman Brandon Boyd has accomplished a handful of awards with his band, but now the singer is going out on a solo effort. He is happy to announce the release of his first solo album, “The Wild Trapeze,” which hits shelves today.
“This group of songs was born of a very different process than the many my band and I have been employing for our almost two decades at work now. The Wild Trapeze began as pot induced meanderings on my dusty acoustic guitar while Incubus was off of the road, and has slowly been morphing into things that I originally could never have imagined,” says Brandon Boyd. “So much of my identity, both personally and creatively has been attached to and related to Incubus. For better or worse! And I do believe that every person in every corner of the world asks themselves at some point on their ride,...

Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd is leaving the rest of the guys behind as he releases his first solo album, "The Wild Trapeze." After nearly two decades with the multi-platinum band, Boyd's solo debut is now available exclusively online.
Boyd teamed up with producer Dave Fridmann, who's worked with Mgmt and The Flaming Lips among others, for the album's ten tracks, which are as uniquely melodic as Incubus' best, but refreshingly not quite as polished sounding.
Boyd penned every track and reportedly played nearly every instrument heard on the record. He also designed the album's artwork and co-directed the music video for the track "Runaway Train." (Not a Soul Asylum cover, but just as good.)

This morning, MTV News' James Montgomery produced his annual list of the best albums of the first half of the year. It's a largely excellent list that shouts out some incredible albums, including the National's dark and brooding High Violet, Against Me!'s loud, rugged White Crosses and Titus Andronicus' raucous (and underrated) concept album The Monitor. Obviously, there are a number of albums that could have made their way onto the list (there are certainly cases to be made for Eminem's chart-topping Recovery, Drake's revolutionary Thank Me Later and Eels' quietly brilliant End Times), but the biggest oversight happens to be what is (in my opinion at least) the best album of the year: Ok Go's Of the Blue Colour of the Sky.
Released back in January (and then confusingly re-released in April), Ok Go's third album is an amazing construction. Produced by Dave Fridmann (the man...

The independent music world lost one of its true visionaries, as Rolling Stone is reporting that Mark Linkous, the singer-songwriter and genius behind Sparklehorse (and a number of other genre-pushing projects), took his own life on Saturday (March 6). "It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear friend and family member, Mark Linkous, took his own life today," Linkous' family said in a statement. "We are thankful for his time with us and will hold him forever in our hearts. May his journey be peaceful, happy and free. There's a heaven and there's a star for you."
Originally from Virginia, Linkous set up a small independent music empire in North Carolina, crafting his own psychedelic takes on folk and indie rock both with Sparklehorse and for other artists. His first album as Sparklehorse, Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot, was released in 1995 and received great acclaim from the college radio scene...

As you've probably heard by now, there's a fairly good chance that, come March, we'll have a new Britney Spears single on our airwaves. Not much is known about the song, except that it's apparently produced by current "It" guy David Guetta (perhaps you've heard "I Gotta Feeling," the ultra-ubiquitous song he did for the Black Eyed Peas).
There's reportedly also an album due this summer, featuring work by Darkchild and 21-year-old producer/musician Jon Asher, who recently told the New York Post that it will be "Epic … music that has meaning. Something that truly moves you."
Sounds epic indeed. So while Spears' label, Jive Records, told MTV News that they "cannot confirm" anything, we here in the Newsroom figured that it's never too early to begin rampant speculation about Brit Brit's new project. Which is why we've complied a wish list of artists and producers we can only dream she'd collaborate with.
