The David di Donatello Awards were held in Rome on Tuesday evening, the first time Italy’s equivalent to the Oscar has had a fully in-person ceremony in the pandemic era. Taking top honors was Paolo Sorrentino’s The Hand Of God which scooped Best Film and Director as well as Best Supporting Actress for Teresa Saponangelo and a tie for Best Cinematography. In the latter category, The Hand Of God shared the win with Freaks Out, a fantasy drama that likewise debuted in Venice.
Sorrentino’s autobiographical drama launched on the Lido last September where it won the Grand Jury Prize. A Netflix title, it went on to myriad festival and critics prizes and was also nominated for an Oscar as Best International Feature.
Freaks Out, directed by Gabriele Mainetti, also picked up prizes for Producer, Production Design, Hair and Makeup. Other titles to figure in the David di...

Shock rocker Iggy Pop has lent his voice to a new documentary on Ancient Egyptian child king Tutankhamun.
“Tutankhamun: The Last Exhibition” simultaneously charts the history of the tomb’s discovery in 1922 and the preparation of the record-breaking touring Tutankhamun exhibition, which launched in Los Angeles in 2019.
The doc was produced in Italy by acclaimed antiquities photographer Sandro Vannini’s Laboratoriorosso Srl in partnership with Nexo Digital. Vannini also appears in the doc and serves as a producer and director of photography.
The Italian version is narrated by musician Manuel Agnelli and the producers decided to go with a musician rather than an actor for the international version too. “We were looking for somebody that could give a different appeal to the narration of the movie,” said Nexus’s Rosella Gioffré. “And we thought of [Pop] and he accepted.”

The Italian version of Simon Cowell’s singing contest The X Factor has scrapped gender and age categories for performers for the first time in the show’s 17-year history.
When the Fremantle and Syco show returns to Comcast-owned Sky Italia in September, contestants will be divided into “heterogeneous” teams and will be mentored by one of the four judges: Emma, Hell Raton, Manuel Agnelli, and Mika. Each judge must have at least one soloist and one band on their team.
Antonella d’Errico, executive vice president of programming at Sky Italia, said: “By removing the historical division by categories, X Factor welcomes change and wants to become a torchbearer and, in a world that no longer needs to make distinctions of gender or age, talent is for us a neutral noun. We will ask all the contestants of this year’s edition to bring the only thing they really need: their personal,...

Fremantle and Sky Italia are changing the “X Factor” format for the talent show’s upcoming Italian edition. The show will find four teams of performers formed without making any distinctions around gender, age or even whether they are an individual artist or a band.
The next edition of the globally distributed show — which in Italy plays on the Comcast-owned Sky Italia paybox — will mark the first “X Factor” in the world that is “changing a historic element of its format that has always characterized the show,” Fremantle Italy CEO Gabriele Immirzi said in a statement.
He added that “today, in 2021, in agreement with Syco Entertainment, we feel this element of the format is far removed from everyday reality, especially for the generations that participate at ‘X Factor.”
“We want to see the growth of musical talents without labels or distinctions that aren’t the value and artistic quality of the projects,...

“X-Factor Italy” has found a new fourth judge after giving Asia Argento the axe back in August.
Lodo Guenzi, an indie musician and actor, has been tapped to step in for Argento beginning with the show’s live episodes on Thursday, Oct. 25. He will join current judges Fedez, Mara Maionchi and Manuel Agnelli.
Argento was fired from the singing competition after she was accused of having sexually abused a former child actor who once played her son in a movie. In a statement shortly after the allegations were made public by the New York Times, producers Sky Italia and Fremantle said they “would have no choice but to … put an end to the collaboration with Asia Argento” if the accusations were “confirmed.”
