Claire Foy has revealed how the director on her first major acting job made her feel bullied.
The Emmy-winning star of The Crown said the director of the BBC’s Being Human pilot was “unkind” to her during filming on the 2008 show.
Foy did not name the individual, but Declan O’Dwyer is credited as the director of the Being Human pilot episode. O’Dwyer’s agent has been contacted for comment.
Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Foy accused O’Dwyer of giving her the “worst note” she has ever received from a director.
Foy alleged that he told her to “start acting, darling” as she shot scenes as the character Julia. The revelation drew an audible gasp from Horowitz’s audience. “I didn’t know what I was doing and he shouted it at me,” Foy remembered.

I think it’s fair to say I don’t get on well with many of today’s historical movies and shows. I’m not a fan of Starz’s Spartacus series or the Game of Thrones TV adaptation; and the recent Viking flick Valhalla Rising bored me to tears… Pathfinder, Beowulf, The 13th Warrior, Centurion, The Eagle? No, no, no, no and hell no! So the prospect of watching viking flick Hammer of the Gods – to be honest – filled me with dread. Even more so given it’s a UK movie that, as far as I’m aware, doesn’t have an official UK release date as yet (bar it’s screening at Frightfest on August 24th) – a sign which usually doesn’t bode well for a British production.

It’s no secret that originality is dead in film. In fact, across all creative mediums the very nature of innovation is an illusion – how our minds are shaped is a reflection of everyone we’ve known and everything to which we’ve been exposed over our life. Every book, song, television show, conversation and meditation congeals in our mind and sometimes an idea springs forth. Barbara Grizzuti Harrison said that there are no original ideas, only original people, and that rings very true. Everything has been done before but it’s how we approach these things – these visions – and how we each adhere to a unique doctrine that can result in something wonderful.
Then there are unoriginal people, individuals who seem to revel in familiarity and cliché or are either completely, blissfully oblivious to all that has come before. If the former is the case then Hammer of the Gods...

Joe Utichi contributes to Deadline’s UK coverage. The current series of BBC Three hit Being Human, about a trio of supernatural roommates, will be its last. The characters will face the Devil himself in the program’s “apocalyptic end”, the BBC said. The show, which started airing its fifth series February 3, was created by Toby Whithouse and began life as a stand-alone pilot starring Andrea Riseborough, Russell Tovey and Guy Flanagan. Only Tovey carried over to the series, which has featured revolving main players like Lenora Crichlow, Aidan Turner and Sinead Keenan. Season 5′s cast of Michael Socha, Damien Molony, Kate Bracken and Steven Robertson will see the show out. A U.S. adaptation is currently airing an all-new third season on Syfy; the original has been a hit on BBC America since debuting in 2009.
