“Harley” director Jean-Cosme Delaloye has wrapped production on a documentary celebrating pioneering Detroit techno music producer Carl Craig.
“Desire: The Carl Craig Story” is structured as an intimate portrait of Craig and an ode to his beloved Detroit. With Detroit’s decline and recovery as a backdrop, the film follows the career of producer whose genre-defying techno has been performed to jazz enthusiasts at the Montreux Jazz Festival and in the premier classical auditoriums around the world, including Carnegie Hall. The film features artists including Gilles Peterson, Roni Size, Laurent Garnier, DJ Minx, Kenny Larkin, Moritz von Oswald and James Lavelle, who worked with Craig and played a major role in bringing techno and electronic music to the masses over the years.
The globe-hopping documentary moves from dance floor to dance floor with stops in Detroit, the Montreux Jazz Festival, London, Bristol, Chicago, New York and Ciudad Juarez among many other places.

Docu-tribute to club hero offers uncritical praise but also tells an intriguing history of electronic dance music since the 80s
In the teeming, highly diverse cinematic habitat of music documentaries, there are surprisingly few about the phylum of electronic dance music and its many sub-classes, orders and colourful creatures. There are some: films about scenes such as the late 80s/early 90s rave movement or specific clubs such as Sub Berlin: History of Tresor. There are others about specific superstar DJs such as the slick, very commercial Leave the World Behind, a tribute to Swedish House Mafia, or Villalobos, a mesmeric, arthouse portrait of Ricardo Villalobos. This docu-tribute to French-born DJ-composer Laurent Garnier lies tonally somewhere between the latter two. It offers fairly uncritical praise for Garnier’s artistry and is built around extensive interviews with the man himself, who is admittedly very articulate and informative; but there is also...

Returning after not one but two cancellations caused by the pandemic, Karlovy Vary Film Festival moves into its final days, with artistic director Karel Och already looking back on the 55th edition, pushed back to Aug. 20-28.
“It was a good decision to postpone,” he tells Variety, noting that the streamlined program, with 25 fewer titles than usual, helped satisfy the audience’s needs. “I think people appreciated the fact that even if they came just for one day, they could see what they wanted to see.”
The event has welcomed the likes of Ninja Thyberg, Alice Diop, Berlinale winner Radu Jude, French DJ Laurent Garnier and “Compartment No. 6” director Juho Kuosmanen, who interacted with the viewers during a slew of live Q&As and talks.
“We have this traditional sense of what the cinema experience should be, of bringing over filmmakers and enabling these encounters, but we can’t stop progress,...

An affectionate and considerate portrait of Laurent Garnier, "techno superstar", godfather of electro française, techno promoter and festival favourite, and, among the film's many surprises, former waiter.
Not just anywhere, however, in the French Embassy in London, in the same febrile late 80s that fostered the Rebel Dykes. In a documentary whose camera prowls with zoom and track through city streets underneath electronic beats we range more widely than that, more quickly than feet will carry us.
London, New York, Paris, Tblisi, what everyone's talking about isn't easy. There's a demonstration of a Roland Tr-909 that takes that programmable percussion and makes music with it. In and among dozens of numbers, those 303s, 808s, the 707s that made international travel cheap enough to move sounds from city to city to city. Moving important too as one of the elements we see is Garnier's record collection, so large it is described in linear.

London-based financier and producer Anton, which already fully finances a slate of its own feature films and short-form content, as well as co-financing big-budget TV shows like HBO/BBC’s “His Dark Materials,” is moving into the development and production of its own scripted series, Anton founder Sebastien Raybaud tells Variety.
The 8-year-old company, named after Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, established its reputation with a film co-production pact — now concluded — with Studiocanal, encompassing titles like the “Paddington” franchise, “Non-Stop” and “Shaun the Sheep.”
In 2017 Anton entered a co-production partnership with the BBC, with an initial investment of £150 million ($193 million), to greenlight premium British drama with international appeal, such as “McMafia,” “Les Misérables” and “His Dark Materials,” which launched this week to stellar numbers.
Last year, Anton signed a sales, financing and production pact on the $40 million animated movie “Fireheart,” from Main Journey’s production team Laurent Zeitoun and Yann Zenou (“The Intouchables”), producers of “Ballerina.

Sebastien Raybaud’s production, finance and sales house Anton has picked up worldwide sales rights to music documentary “Laurent Garnier: Off the Record,” and is presenting the project to buyers at the American Film Market.
The documentary looks at the life of one of the godfathers of house music, the pioneering DJ Laurent Garnier, from his emergence on the music scene in the 1980s to the present day, and follows him on his 2018-2019 global tour.
The film, currently in post-production, is directed by Gabin Rivoire (“Violence With Benefits”), with whom Garnier collaborates on the Yeah! Festival. Featuristic Films’ Julien Loeffler produced the project with associate producers James Kermack and Fabrice Smadja.
Anton’s Charlotte van Weede and Juliette Fourniez will handle U.S. and international sales.
Raybaud said: “The impact that electronic music has had on millions of people throughout the world is remarkable. Laurent Garnier has been one of its biggest ambassadors.

With mainstream Edm under fire in recent months, Arno Cost might be strategically positioning himself to capitalize on electronic music fans’ increasingly refined tastes. While the Coming Alive Ep that he just released on Nicky Romero’s Protocol Recordings imprint was equal parts melodic and progressive house, he intends for his upcoming releases to lean more towards the former category.
When we met up with Arno in Miami last month for Miami Music Week, he made it clear that he would like to revisit his musical origins in 2016 – origins that are rooted in the French touch movement of the ‘90s.
The genre was a largely instrumental iteration of house music championed by artists like Laurent Garnier and Guillaume la Tortue that would lay the foundation for artists like Daft Punk to make waves in the years to follow.
In addition, Cost also discussed being signed to Protocol and gave us...

With how rapidly David Guetta was becoming the butt of every joke in the world of Edm, he had to do something to re-establish his credibility. This past weekend, he did just that, by delivering an “Influences” Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1 that’s chock full of the ’80s house and techno that inspired him to become a DJ in the first place.
We’ve briefly mentioned Guetta’s illustrious musical history recently, and it looks like the proper house bug has bit him again as the mix features some amazing classics. DJ Sneak and Laurent Garnier grace the many seminal names on the track list, all of whom contribute to the retro wonkiness of the mix as a whole. If Guetta feels it necessary to go to these kinds of measures to appeal to an increasingly discerning world of music fans, we’re not complaining.

Electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk were refused visas by China. The band was set to perform at next month's Strawberry Festival in Beijing, but the Afp reports that those plans were foiled by something Kraftwerk did 15 years ago.
The Chinese music company that applied for the visas told the Afp the government denied them on account of a Tibetan Freedom concert at which Kraftwerk was scheduled to perform. The 1998 concert in Washington D.C. didn't even actually feature the German outfit -- bad weather caused them to scrap their show. (Sidebar: The ill-fated event was described by Rolling Stone as "ultimately disappointing" and multiple audience members were injured by lightning storms.)
China's government has as history of denying visas to performers who have supported Tibetan independences, sources told the Afp. State-run media outlets reported that Kraftwerk would no longer perform, but only cited "political reasons" to explain the change of plans.

David Guetta was greeted by applause from more than 2,000 fans as he launched the worldwide premiere of his new film Nothing But the Beat at the iconic Le Grand Rex theatre in Paris.
The Grammy Award-winning artist, producer and DJ, who attended Saturday's event with his wife Cathy, said: "All my life I wanted this music to be as respected as hip-hop, rock and pop but until this moment, it wasn't.
"It's not only about me; it's about the culture and the position of the DJ."
Nothing But the Beat is a full-length documentary-style film chronicling Guetta's life, career and meteoric rise from underground house DJ to global superstar.
The movie - a collaboration between Guetta and Coca-Cola's energy drink Burn - chronicles how David fused house and electronic beats with hip-hop and R&B to create a sound that has topped charts worldwide.
