As James Moran takes his story of a scary shed to Horror Channel FrighFest, he tells us how it came about...
After a lot of blood, sweat and tears (mostly blood) our new short film, Blood Shed, is unleashed on an unsuspecting Horror Channel FrightFest audience this month. The story of one man’s love for his shed, which eats people, it’s a horror comedy inspired by Creepshow, starring Shaun Dooley and Sally Phillips.
People have asked how we brought this unique monster tale to life, and the answer is... slowly, with guts, and lots of planning (and blood, don't forget the blood). Ahead of its world premiere this weekend, here's how we brought our evil shed to life.

As the first episode of the tenth series of Doctor Who hits our screens, we sent our Doctor Who expert Reuben Roper to the first official press screening in Soho, London. Obviously, we will be issuing a Massive Spoiler Warning for this review as it contains a fair few spoilers for the upcoming episode and series.
The episode started in The Doctor’s study in Cardiff University. Many ‘kisses to the past’ were featured in this scene: a mug full of The Doctor’s previous models of sonic screwdrivers, and framed pictures of River Song and Susan Foreman (The Doctor’s Granddaughter). There was also a sign hung on The Tardis saying ‘out of order’, which could be a reference to the scene in the William Hartnell story The War Machines. We were off to a great start.

I'm so glad that Barry Jenkins' "Moonlight" is getting lots of love from the Independent Spirit Awards. It is raw, honest, pure! One of my favorite films of the year! I also enjoyed "Jackie" but largely due to Natalie Portman's wonderful performance. Oh, I'm also loving "Manchester by the Sea!" I interviewed the cast at the Toronto International Film Festival, check it out here. Affleck and Hedges received nominations from the film among its many accomplishments. And I love Ruth Negga from "Loving!" She's nominated for Best Female Lead. Check out my interview with the actress where I told her we'll all remember her name by year's end!

With the hopeful success of Michael Fassbender jumping off buildings, Ubisoft is gearing up for an adaptation of another one of their video games titled The Division, which already stars Jake Gyllenhaal. Now, THR reports Jessica Chastain may join the Nightcrawler star in the dystopian action thriller set in New York City after a smallpox outbreak leaves the world torn. Hollywood has long-since tried to bring video games to the big screen, usually with muddled results. Star caliber of this rate is a good starting point, but who is set to helm and pen the film will be the next test to see how serious Ubisoft is to make this work. Chastain was most recently seen in The Huntsman: Winter’s War, and she’s slated for six films over the next year. Gyllenhaal is also producing the film with Gerard Guillemot of Ubisoft.

Marion Cotillard 'Psycho' scream. Marion Cotillard in 'Psycho' A few years ago – more exactly, in Feb./March 2008 – Vanity Fair published a series of images honoring Alfred Hitchcock movies made in Hollywood. (His British oeuvre was completely ignored.) The images weren't from the movies themselves; instead, they were somewhat faithful recreations featuring early 21st century stars, including several of that year's Oscar nominees. And that's why you get to see above – and further below – Marion Cotillard recreating the iconic Psycho shower scene. Cotillard took home the Best Actress Oscar at the 2008 ceremony for her performance as Edith Piaf in Olivier Dahan's La Vie en Rose / La môme. Janet Leigh, the original star of Hitchcock's Psycho, was shortlisted for the 1960 Best Supporting Actress Oscar, but lost to another good-girl-gone-bad, Shirley Jones as a sex worker in Richard Brooks' Elmer Gantry. More nudity, less horror Looking at the Marion Cotillard Psycho images,...

Rooney Mara, who won Best Actress at Cannes last month for her role in Carol, will star opposite Ben Mendelsohn (Starred Up) in the relationship drama.
Based on playwright David Harrower’s Olivier Award-winning play of the same name, it tells the story of Ray (Mendelsohn) who is confronted with his past when Una (Mara) arrives unannounced at his office.
Fifteen years earlier, the two had an illicit affair, for which Ray was arrested and imprisoned. He has since built a new life for himself; she is looking for answers.

As someone who was in college around the time of the rise of author Jt LeRoy, I’m really surprised that I didn’t know this story. Whether you were a fan of the books, or have never heard his name before… this is one documentary that you don’t want to miss.
The Cult Of Jt Leroy starts out by following a young homeless kid who had suffered a tremendous amount of abuse, and ends up addicted to heroin while prostituting on the streets of San Francisco. His psychologist, who he called into regularly, encouraged him to start writing his stories down, and soon, the world took notice.
Jt’s stories told personal accounts of gender confusion, abuse, drug use, sexual exploration and other incredibly intimate topics. After being passed around to various authors, Jt’s stories were soon published, and took off with great success. Soon after, Jt...

The Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular is a must-see tribute to the show's tremendous musical repertoire...
Doctor Who has been around for over half a century, and a decade on from its triumphant return to TV, it's fair to say that it's never been more popular around the world. Events like the 2013 simulcast and special cinema screenings of The Day Of The Doctor will attest to this and it never seems like we're far off from another reminder of its regenerated global fandom.
Following successful runs in Australia and New Zeleand, the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular arena show reiterated that case on its first UK tour last week, drawing crowds across the nation. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales and members of the National Chorus of Wales went from Wembley to Glasgow over the course of seven dates, in celebration of composer Murray Gold's spellbinding musical score for the series.

"It's been over a decade - and if you had asked me then if I'd be writing music in 10 years' time for Doctor Who, I'd probably have said no - but it keeps replenishing itself, and you never feel like you've done it right, you just want to do it better every time."
Murray Gold's unyielding passion for scoring Doctor Who is plain to hear when one listens to his decade's worth of work on the series - there's a determination and drive behind these pieces, a refusal to be staid or to rely on a standard bag of tricks.
Gold's remarkable music is - no surprise - the biggest draw of the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular, a nationwide tour which comes to the UK following a stint in Australia and will travel to New York later in the year.

And now our semi-weekly check in with actresses we love. Where / What / Who are they up to?
Brie
Brie Larson has accepted an offer to star in the psychological horror drama as "Ma", about a woman who's trapped in her father's basement for years with her son. It's based on the novel by Emma Donoghue who also did the screenplay but the novel is narrated by the 5 year old child who's only ever known this one room so that one's going to be tricky to make breathe as a film. This seems a better fit for her dramatic gifts than that dumb Terminator reboot she lost out on. The actress is in demand now post Short Term 12 as well she should be. She's also got The Gambler remake and the comedy Trainwreck coming out. Room is not the only novel adaptation she's attached to. She'll probably co-star in The...

Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2013—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2013 to create a unique double feature.
All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2013 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch in that perfect world we know doesn't exist but can keep dreaming of every time we go to the movies.

Premier League strugglers West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion played on an enthralling rollercoaster 3-3 draw at Upton Park that left neutrals satisified, but neither side any better off.
Joe Cole opened the scoring for the hosts inside five minutes before a late first half brace from Nicolas Anelka put the Baggies ahead. Modibo Maiga and Hammers captain Kevin Nolan struck in quick succession to complete the turnaround after the break.
Saido Berahino rescued a point for West Brom, however, and it could have been more but for the goal frame. His late free kick rattled the woodwork, so both sides shared the spoils.

West Ham United host West Bromwich Albion protecting a record of a decade unbeaten in home meetings. Brian Deane scored three times – twice at the right end and then in his own net – in November 2003 as the Baggies edged a seven-goal thriller 4-3.
The Hammers last entertained Albion in March and ran out 3-1 winners, but they will still be without Andy Carroll – the difference between the sides that day. Sam Allardyce has further intensified the pressure on himself by describing Saturday’s lunchtime encounter with West Brom as “a must win” as West Ham have slipped into the Premier League’s bottom three.
Heavyweights Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool have all given the Hammers hidings in recent outings with only an extended run in the Capital One Cup affordng fans crumbs of Christmas comfort.

In what is fast becoming a regular fixture in the BBC’s schedule of events (well, every couple of years at least), the Royal Albert Hall was filled with fezes, Sonic Screwdrivers, and more aliens than you could shake a stick at for the third Doctor Who Prom, which was recorded in early July and broadcast yesterday on BBC1.
Like the two previous Doctor Who Proms, this is a very Murray Gold-centric concert given that he has been Doctor Who’s composer since 2005 with a specific focus on the Eleventh Doctor and music from Series 7 episodes including I Am The Doctor, The Impossible Girl, and a beautiful rendition of the climactic song from recent episode The Rings Of Akhaten performed by child actress Kerry Ingram and tenor Allan Clayton. But, as this year’s Prom is also celebrating Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary, it...

Doctor Who celebrated its 50th anniversary at the BBC Proms 2013 on Saturday (July 13).
The concert at the Royal Albert Hall was hosted by the most recent Doctor Matt Smith and co-star Jenna Coleman, who plays companion Clara.
"One of the great joys of playing this extraordinary, legendary Time Lord is the support and knowledge and love and brilliance of the fans - you really make the show what it is," Smith told the audience.
The fifth Doctor Peter Davison and Carole Ann Ford, who played the first companion Susan in 1963, also appeared at the event, which featured music from Doctor Who.
The BBC National Orchestra of Wales and London Philharmonic Choir, conducted by Ben Foster, provided the music.
A second Doctor Who Prom will take place later today, with both concerts being filmed for 50th anniversary specials to be shown in November.

Greetings fellow Whovians! As the Doctor Who Editor in these parts, I’m here to introduce you all to a new feature in this little blue corner of What Culture: The Doctor Who Digest. Every week, myself or one of the other awesome Doctor Who writers on this fine site will be bringing you up to snuff with some news items that have been reported in the week before publication. Every Friday, you’ll get a fix of news involving everyone’s favorite Madman With A Box, and if we’re lucky an awesome photo to start things off. (Which will be a Lot easier to come by when the show comes back from its break.)
To start us off, a remembrance. Raymond Cusick, 84, passed away on February 21st of this year. On staff with Who from 1965 to 1966, Cusick created the original design of the Daleks, and was supposedly only paid £100 for his creations.

It’s been eight long years since Idina Menzel hung up her broomstick and left the original New York production of Wicked, the musical that helped her win her first Tony — but next spring, one of Broadway’s most beloved belters is coming home.
Menzel is set to star as Elizabeth in If/Then, a new musical by composer Tom Kitt, lyricist/book writer Brian Yorkey, and director Michael Greif — the team behind the Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning Next to Normal. (Greif also directed the original off-Broadway and Broadway productions of Rent, which featured Menzel as performance artist Maureen.) Here...

Fruitvale became the first Sundance film to win the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. Dramatic film since Precious in 2009. First-time director Ryan Coogler was inspired to write the film after 22-year-old Oscar Grant was shot in the back and killed by Oakland transit police on New Year’s Day morning 2009. Fruitvale tells the story of Grant’s last 24 hours alive, as he attempts to become a better father, a better boyfriend, and a better son and friend. “It’s about human beings and how we treat each other,” said Coogler, “how we treat people that...

Stars: Joe Cole, English Frank, Kimberley Nixon, Shaun Dooley, Tyson Oba | Written by Paul Van Carter | Directed by Ron Scalpello
Offender would lay claim to be the first film set against the ‘burning backdrop’ of the London riots. That would a slightly tenuous claim to be made, however, as the riots are ultimately rather incidental to the film’s narrative. Our ‘hero’ is Tommy, played by Joe Cole (no, not that Joe Cole – though hopefully he’ll one day star in a film alongside Ben Foster (this one, not that one) and Tom Cruise (this one, not that one) in a film about English nearly men). Tommy is a builder who goes out with probation officer Elsie (Fresh Meat’s Kimberley Nixon) and is going to have a little baby with her. Unfortunately, Elsie runs foul of some unpleasant young men who have been a robbin’ and a murderin’ during the riots.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that 20th Century Fox now has official plans for a follow-up film to Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror film, Prometheus. Actors Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace are already signed up to return for a sequel but it’s still unclear if Ridley would return to helm the film. “Ridley is incredibly excited about the movie, but we have to get it right. We can’t rush it,” says Fox President of Production Emma Watts.

2012′s Toronto International Film Festival is set to officially announce its initial line-up later today, but Variety let the cat out of the bag, at least partially; and it’s quite astounding. Most of our most-anticipated films of the year will be premiering at the Canadian festival, notably Terrence Malick‘s To the Wonder, Wachowskis & Tom Tykwer‘s epic-sounding Cloud Atlas, Rian Johnson‘s Looper (which will open the fest), Ben Affleck‘s Argo, Dereck Cianfrance‘s The Place Beyond the Pines and much, more more.
Coming from Sundance, the only mentioned film was Ben Lewis‘ John Hawkes-starring The Sessions, while Cannes premieres include Matteo Garrone‘s Reality, Thomas Vinterberg‘s The Hunt, Pablo Larrain‘s No and Jacques Audiard‘s Rust and Bone. One of the biggest surprises is a new film from Noah Baumbach, starring Greta Gerwing titled Frances Ha. There’s also The Avengers director Joss Whedon...

Another couple of days, another couple of actors added. So it goes with Olympus Has Fallen, the Antoine Fuqua-helmed thrill ride that has, this time around, contracted the great Robert Forster (most recently seen in The Descendants) and Ashley Judd to take supporting parts. THR provides a rundown of their roles that will probably be equal to the film’s onscreen characterization: The seasoned veteran is playing a general who goes toe-to-toe with “nuke-loving [North Korean] terrorists” who’ve taken over the White House, while his new co-star is the First Lady to Aaron Eckhart‘s Commander-in-chief.
Gerard Butler will try to rescue them everyone else held hostage by Rick Yune‘s character, a “sociopathic monster” posing as a South Korean aide. Melissa Leo, Dylan McDermott, Angela Bassett, Radha Mitchell, and Cole Hauser also star in Olympus Has Fallen, which starts shooting sometime during the next week.

So, yeah. Everyone knows that today the planet Venus passed between the Earth and the Sun. Especially Fox, which has Ridley Scott's Prometheus (review) hitting theatres this weekend. Can you think of a better rare celestial event to capitalize on? Dig it!
Star gazers (and perhaps legions of movie fans) will have their eyes on the sky today to catch a glimpse of The Transit of Venus, a rare celestial event that occurs when the planet passes directly between Earth and the Sun. Such transits help us to identify the capacity for life on other worlds as they move across the face of their home star.
