Welcome back to another episode of The Playlist Podcast. On this episode, I’m joined by Bingeworthy host Kimber Myers and Adjust Your Tracking co-host Joe von Appen to discuss “The Fast and the Furious” franchise.
“The Fate of the Furious” — the eighth entry into the 16-year-old series — had the biggest worldwide box office opening this past weekend, but we start our discussion with the series’ humble beginnings as a B-movie “Point Break” knockoff before it turned into blue-collar “Mission: Impossible.” We discuss the series as a whole, give our thoughts on the latest entry, and speculate on where the series should (or shouldn’t) go from here.

After a much-needed breather from podcasting after a crazy last few months, Joe von Appen and I have gotten back on mic to continue with Adjust Your Tracking. We talk about our absence and looking for meaning again in cinema. A few new titles out there come up, most notably Jordan Peele‘s wonderful box-office hit “Get Out,” and Macon Blair‘s Sundance-winning, already-streaming-on-Netflix, and perfectly titled, “I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore.” Also, why “The Lobster” is the film of our time.

Adjust Your Tracking is back to talk about cult movies and the often tepid results from attempting to catch lightning in a bottle again. While the box-office and critical reception for “Blair Witch” was underwhelming, to say the least, we still find other aspects around the film and the franchise to dig into. All of which nicely ties into the latest edition of our special segment Hold Up: “Donnie Darko.”

My co-host Joe von Appen and myself have often championed the work of director Adam Wingard and screenwriter/producer Simon Barrett (we’re big fans of “The Guest” and “You’re Next“).

After some recent episodes of Ayt, in which me and my co-host Joe von Appen have bemoaned the rather weak state of movies for most this year (though all this recent festival coverage has us excited for the coming months of big releases), we’ve turned a corner and on this episode highlight two smaller releases well worth seeking out.

Our main review is about “Kicks,” the debut from director Justin Tipping (a director we’ll certainly be following closely now) that’s a blast of cinematic verve and entertaining to boot.

Podcast: Adjust Your Tracking Looks At Recent Detroit-Set Horror Films ‘Don’t Breathe’ & ‘Antibirth’
Adjust Your Tracking is back and ready to put the nail in the coffin of 2016 summer movies. With that in mind, I’m joined as usual by co-host Joe von Appen to discuss two recent additions to the ever-growing subgenre of horror titles that specifically use Detroit as a setting: newly minted box office hit “Don’t Breathe” and already obscure VOD title “Antibirth.” We also find potential parallels from the terrible recent events in that city to that of Hollywood’s recent output.

“The Neon Demon” opened last weekend and performed rather poorly at the box office, but there’s still a lot to discuss about the film and its director, Nicolas Winding Refn. That’s where Joe von Appen and myself step in on this latest episode of Adjust Your Tracking. Most of the podcast is spent discussing Refn’s latest […]

On this latest episode of Adjust Your Tracking, my co-host, Joe von Appen, and myself bring down the shades, look through our telescopes and stare endlessly at the lurid, surreal and dreamy filmic universe of Brian De Palma. Of course, this is in honor of the theatrical release for “De Palma,” the new documentary by the filmmaker’s […]

On this latest episode of Adjust Your Tracking, my co-host Joe von Appen, who’s something of a Shane Black scholar, gets to impart his vast knowledge of the “The Nice Guys” writer/director’s oeuvre. Before we dive into his career and our review of his latest film, which came out last week and sadly underperformed at […]

This episode of Adjust Your Tracking is made up of two reviews, opens with Joe von Appen and myself briefly reminiscing about the podcast’s origins and then quickly spinning off into the films at hand. We split over Ben Wheatley‘s new apocalyptic class war picture “High-Rise” but nothing can stop us both from gushing over Yorgos Lanthimos‘ […]

Adjust Your Tracking is back to talk about director Jeremy Saulnier's latest film, "Green Room," an intensely entertaining and violent horror action film — his followup to "Blue Ruin" — about a punk band stuck in a life or death fight against a group of neo-nazis after a show goes wrong. My co-host Joe von Appen and I are big fans of Saulnier's particular brand of genre filmmaking, which often finds regular, frightened and even bumbling people put into extreme situations. He's definitely a filmmaker on the rise and will no doubt move onto something bigger and hopefully even better soon (check out my Playlist Podcast interview with him and "Green Room" co-star Anton Yelchin for even more on this). Read More: Cannes Review: Jeremy Saulnier's 'Green Room' Beyond praising that film, though, we also look at it in conjunction with another recent genre release, "Hardcore Henry," an over-the-top.

On the previous episode of Adjust Your Tracking, myself and co-host Joe von Appen gushed about Jeff Nichols' "Midnight Special," and we open this latest episode of the podcast with a followup on its scary box office possibilities (or lack thereof). But the main section of the show is dedicated to Richard Linklater's latest film, "Everybody Wants Some!!," and beyond our review, we dive into a deeper discussion about the film's specific, mostly-white male perspective and what that means in an era of #OscarSoWhite movie culture. The final segment of the podcast is our latest edition of Hold Up, in which we discuss Mathieu Kassovitz' brilliant 1995 film "La Haine," which is possibly even more relevant today than during its initial release. Earlier this week, we dropped the latest Playlist Podcast where I talked with Kevin Jagernauth and Rodrigo Perez about "Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice." And on this latest episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe von Appen and myself can't help but open with our ranty feelings on the movie. It turns out to be good context for the meat of this episode, discussing the power of Jeff Nichols' latest film, "Midnight Special." The film rolled out to more theaters this weekend and will expand from there. Now that it's playing in wider release, we hope you're able to track it down. Listen to the podcast to hear why we love it so. On our recent The Playlist Podcast, we recently published an interview with "Embrace Of The Serpent" director Ciro Guerra. With this latest edition, I have the honor to announce an exciting new stage in our podcasting ventures at this site. Please welcome film podcast Adjust Your Tracking, the latest addition to what will become a podcast network here at The Playlist. In brief, Ayt (along with co-host Joe von Appen) has been going strong for more than four years now, and has been brought in to be one of the pillars of this new network of shows. I'll be adding more new shows to The Playlist Podcast iTunes feed as we move along, so stay tuned and make sure to subscribe if you haven't yet. Yeah, yeah, we know. "Avengers: Age Of Ultron" sequel took its expected gigantic chomp out of this weekend's box office. But we're not here to talk about that. Instead, on our latest podcast, we discuss a film that is quietly becoming a sleeper sensation: "Ex Machina." But no matter, because there's so much to discuss with Alex Garland's directorial debut, and, with its modestly successful expansion onto more than 1200 screens across the Us last week, we thought it was well worth our time (and yours, dear reader) to dive into the film and discuss it in depth, as well as Garland's career so far. Ever since Oli Lyttelton's rave A grade review back in January (when it opened in the UK), where he called it the "first great film of 2015," we've been singing the praises for "Ex Machina." On this episode, I'm joined by Joe Von Appen, my co-host on another film podcast,...

Even though "Chappie" was number one at the box office this weekend, a $13 million bow is hardly impressive, and Neill Blomkamp has been taking his hits from a lot of critics. We reviewed the film already with a B grade (one of the most positive and fair/evenhanded reviews out there, actually), but here on our latest podcast we examine the potential consequences of all this vitriol on a young director's career, and also the unrealistic expectations that have come in the wake of Blomkamp's massive debut success with "District 9." On this episode, I'm joined by Joe von Appen, my co-host on another film podcast, Adjust Your Tracking. Though a lot of the noise surrounding "Chappie" has been hyperbolic and a tad mind-boggling (even with its very clear flaws), we hope you appreciate our attempts at providing a more balanced perspective.
