This week, the British Prime Minister welcomed the stars of this year’s Soccer Aid for Unicef, including former Olympic athletes Usain Bolt and Soccer Aid co-founder Robbie Williams to a reception at 10 Downing Street.
The event celebrated the commitment by the UK government to match every £1 donated by the public through its UK Aid Match scheme, doubling the difference for children in danger around the world.
Soccer Aid for Unicef star players including Sir Mo Farah and Olly Murs joined the Prime Minister to celebrate change made possible by the generous donations of the British public, who have previously raised more than £24 million for Soccer Aid for Unicef since the first match in 2006.
The reception also welcomed young reporter Kendra, aged 14, who travelled to see how donations to Soccer Aid for Unicef can help children in Lesotho, school children and Unicef UK Children’s Champions – members of the public...

Three of Holland’s most decorated players have announced they will take part in Soccer Aid for Unicef this summer.
Patrick Kluivert will make his debut for the Soccer Aid World XI, with Jaap Stam returning at the heart of the defence in front of goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar who has also starred previously.
The Dutch triumvirate – two of which, Stam and van der Sar, enjoyed successful club careers with Manchester United at Old Trafford – will team up with compatriot Clarence Seedorf who has already announced that he too will play for the Soccer Aid World XI.
An imposing central defender, Jaap Stam won a range of trophies with some of Europe’s top clubs across a 15-year career. Included in this was a three-year stay at Manchester United, where he is remembered fondly as part of the ’99 treble-winning side.
Edwin van der Sar was one of the finest goalkeepers of his generation.

It’s not often that I write a list where it’s harder to condense ideas rather than devise them but creating a feature involving unsuccessful players at Newcastle United is as simple as getting Brendan Rodgers to talk about himself.
The sorting process is relatively simple. You just have to ask three questions. Did the player play during Kevin Keegan’s 1995-96 or Bobby Robson’s 2001-04? Is the player Alan Shearer? Were they part of Alan Pardew’s remarkable fifth place finish in 2011-12? Right, now if the answer is no for each then they were probably a Tyneside failure.
Obviously there are a few exceptions (Antoine Sibierski for starters): a handful of players have escaped the shame of being placed on this list as my warm heart believes they were either poorly managed or not really expected to be any good in the first place.

Vurnon Anita believes there’s always been a “connection between Dutch people and Newcastle United” – and that part of the reason behind that is because Tyneside is “close to Holland”.
The 26-year-old’s geography may be questionable – although it’s likely he is referring to the fact it is easy to travel between Newcastle and Holland via ferry or plane – but his assertion that the Dutch have a strong connection with the Toon is an important one given the composition of Steve McClaren’s current squad.
Alongside Anita, Newcastle have four other Dutchmen on their playing staff – and the midfielder believes another reason behind the bond between Holland and Tyneside is due to the array of Oranje stars to have represented the Magpies down the years.

There are few clubs that polarise opinion like Manchester United. Love them or loathe them, you can never ignore them. United have been one of the biggest clubs in the world for decades and are one of the best supported clubs in the world.
Naturally, a club of United’s stature are nearly always linked with players from all over the world.
For a club that has always looked to its youth ranks for talent, United have never been shy of bringing in star players. Even back in the 1960’s George Best and Bobby Charlton, graduates from the youth team were joined by Denis Law, whose transfer from Torino was a British record.
Fast-forward to the Alex Ferguson era, and the like of Giggs, Beckham, Scholes, the Nevilles and Nicky Butt found themselves rubbing shoulders with Eric Cantona, Juan Sebastian Veron and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew was given permission to speak to Crystal Palace yesterday about their vacant manager’s position after the two clubs agreed on a £2 million compensation package.
Pardew’s trusty leftenant, John Carver, has been installed as caretaker manager until The Magpies’ owner Mike Ashley finds a suitable replacement. The Toon are in safe hands if Carver’s record in the role is anything to go by.
The 49-year-old is one of the few managers in the history of football with a 100% win record following his previous tenure as Nufc’s babysitter-in-chief. Albeit, this incredible win percentage came from just one game after the late, great Sir Bobby Robson was inexplicably sacked in September 2004.
The former England manager, who was also assisted by Geordie John, guided Newcastle to three top five finishes, the Champions League second group phase, a UEFA Cup semi-final and...

Newcastle United supporters are known for getting whipped in a frenzy at the prospect of a new signing, falling over themselves with excitement at the club’s latest purchase. Turning out in their droves for the unveilings of Alan Shearer, Michael Owen and even Patrick Kluivert, it certainly doesn’t take much for St. James’ Park to resemble that of the Santiago Bernabeu on ‘Galactico Day’.
With that being said, however, it must take a certain type of player with an extraordinary average reputation to not only fail to excite the Geordie nation, but to actively demoralise them. The likes of Shefki Kuqi, Steven Ireland and Cacapa have not only quenched Toon hopes, but have fuelled a burning anger within the Toon Army, as they lament Mike Ashley’s penny-pinching policy. Ultimately, in all three cases, and many of similar ilk, they left the club having...

After a disastrous season for the club, incoming manager Louis van Gaal has promised to make us great again next season.
The Netherlands boss is expected to be announced as United’s new manager this week on a £7 million-a-season deal and has already identified taking the club back to the top of English football as one of his most pressing priorities.
Van Gaal is also confident the players will buy into his attacking philosophy and confirmed he will be utilizing a 4-3-3 formation at Old Trafford next season.
The Daily Star quoted him as saying: “I think it’s my philosophy because it binds players with my training.
“In my career, I have had a lot of players who are fascinated by that philosophy. They find it nice to take part in it because it’s attacking, technical and tactical.
They can show their qualities more than ever.

Once upon a time Newcastle United weren’t afraid to spend money. Austerity didn’t really exist at St James’ Park before Mike Ashley dropped into town while financial planning was a mystery concept to ex-chairman Freddy Shepherd and chief note burners Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Ruud Gullit.
It was a strategy that proved more miss than hit over the years as the club would often fork out a kings ransom for a throughly average player and lumber itself with a financial burden on a lucrative five-year contract. Our roll call of extravagantly priced flops is so bad it’s impressive.
But among the masses of damp squibs that Toon supporters have had to grin and bear in the Premier League era there are 10 useless individuals that stand out from the crowd as our most costly transfer mistakes.

The drama has started before a dance step has even been pranced on this week's Strictly Come Dancing as Bruce Forsyth, at the grand old age of 85, has been forced to pull out of filming with flu.
Get well soon Brucie! Nice to sneeze you, to sneeze you... not nice.
Cometh the hour, cometh the Winkleman. Claudia will make her Strictly debut slightly earlier this year, pairing up with Tess tonight and on Sunday's results show.
Aside from the hosting merry-go-round, we'll get to see every single celebrity dance for the second time tonight. Can Abbey Clancy be as sexy in Latin as she was elegant in ballroom? Alan Pardew will lead his Newcastle United team into their fourth pre-season friendly tonight, as part of their second training camp – this time in the Algarve, Portugal – against Greek Super League champions Olympiakos, when the teams face off at 8.45pm, live on Espn.
The match is hosted at the 30,000 capacity Estadio Algarve as part of the Xii Trofeo Guadiana tournament, which began last night when Olympiakos faced Portuguese side Sc Braga (including former Newcastle midfielder Hugo Viana). The sides drew 1-1 after 90 minutes, and then played a short penalty shoot-out which ended 4-4, bizarrely with only five kicks allowed each.
The last time Newcastle faced the Greek champions was back in 2005 in the UEFA Cup, which saw home and away victores for the Magpies, thanks to goals from Alan Shearer, Laurent Robert and Patrick Kluivert in Greece to win 1-3 and another brace from Shearer, plus one each from former...

This evening’s televised meeting of the two clubs currently occupying 6th and 7th place in the Premiership will reunite players and management staff currently on the books at Liverpool with their former club, as the North East’s current top team arrive at Anfield on the back of a by-the-books victory over Bolton on Boxing Day. Kenny Dalglish, Steve Clarke, Andy Carroll, Jose Enrique and Craig Bellamy will all know exactly what to expect from Newcastle’s vociferous travelling fanbase with 2,000 Geordies set to arrive on Merseyside ahead of the 7.45pm kick-off.
