With Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ruling the world, thanks to a huge $194 million box office weekend, the MonsterVerse has never been so mighty. As speculation for a third Godzilla-versus-Kong movie is underway, it is time to talk about the best parts of the kaiju-centered universe: the monster battles.
While Kong had a share of bare-knuckle brawls, Godzilla faced numerous foes, with most of them nearly outmatching the fearsome lizard. It only begs the question: if they can beat Godzilla, can they also beat Kong? Here are five of Godzilla’s enemies that can defeat Kong in a battle:
1. King Ghidorah

Is there any movie opinion more wrong-headed than saying that Godzilla isn’t my Godzilla? Sure, you might prefer the serious allegorical Godzilla from the 1954 movie or, more recently, Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One. Or you might like the goofier Godzilla from Godzilla vs. Gigan and the newest film, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Heck, it is absolutely okay if the American Iguana monster Zilla is your jam.
The only thing that’s unacceptable, that’s absolutely dumb and worthless, is saying that a particular movie doesn’t understand Godzilla. A movie may botch everything else around the giant lizard monster, as happens often in the United States, but the lizard always works. Not only would every movie be improved by the inclusion of a giant fire-breathing monster, but the King of the Monsters fits in a wide range of movies, making him (or her!) pop culture’s most versatile star.

Adam Wingard's new film "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" has, tonally speaking, strayed far from Gareth Edwards' 2014 MonsterVerse kickoff film "Godzilla." Edwards' film was somber and sad, featuring very little "fun" monster destruction. As the MonserVerse series has progressed, however, it has crept inexorably toward a sillier tone before striking it rich with Wingard's 2021 entry "Godzilla vs. Kong." That film featured a battle between the titular titans, but also a cameo from Mechagodzilla, a monstrous robot extrapolated from the skull of the dead King Ghidorah. "GvK" also featured a fleet of human-built UFOs and a magical portal that led into the Hollow Earth, an unusual underground realm ruled by monsters.
The Hollow Earth idea is straight out of Jules Verne, but the mayhem-forward approach to a Godzilla movie comes from several of Toho's films released in the 1970s. Indeed, many critics and pundits have been comparing "GxK" to the series' Shōwa era,...

It takes a lot of skill, physical endurance, and a certain je-ne-sais-quoi to play Godzilla. The late great Haruo Nakajima — who played Godzilla in 12 of the Showa-era films from the original "Godzilla" through "Godzilla vs. Gigan" in 1974 — revealed in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter in 2017 that he modeled his movements on bears. He seemingly wanted Godzilla to look like he weighed a lot and lumbered appropriately. Nakajima was no doubt aided by the fact that the Godzilla suit weighed quite a lot and was difficult to move in. It was Nakajima who developed the signature "put up your dukes" movement for Godzilla, a gesture that gave the giant radioactive gorilla-whale a lot of personality.
When Nakajima retired from playing Godzilla, a few different actors took turns in the role until the making of 1984's "Return of Godzilla" (released as "Godzilla 1985" in the United States). In that film Kenpachiro Satsuma took over the role,...

We're in the midst of a Godzilla renaissance. The big guy stole the show in 2023 with the critically acclaimed "Godzilla: Minus One," then appeared on the Apple+ TV series "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," and battles King Kong once more on the big screen in Adam Wingard's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." We haven't even mentioned Netflix's "Godzilla" animated series or the slew of unique takes on the character released over the last decade, including the terrifying "Shin Godzilla." It's a great time to be a Gojira fan!
Of course, Godzilla enjoys the moniker "King of the Monsters" and with good reason: he's hard to stop. Since his debut in 1954, our hulking, spiky-tailed, nuclear pal has bought the farm only four times and typically wins his epic confrontations with other Kaiju. That's not to say he doesn't lose a fight, but more often than not, Godzilla runs slowly walks home with the trophy,...

As an interconnected franchise, Legendary’s MonsterVerse is going to complete a decade in the pop culture landscape by next year, with a humble collection of five movies and two series, and the major connecting thread in its world-building, obviously aside from the primeval Titans, is the organization ‘Monarch’ itself. Despite being the central overseer of all Titan-related affairs, the role of the organization was largely undermined, and without a definitive direction, it was reduced to a generic plot device. Things took a better turn after Monarch: Legacy of Monsters added a strong foundation to the origin and gradual transformation of the titular organization, rooted in the human-monster relationship, which acts as a brilliant contemporary political commentary at the same time.

Since it first terrorized Tokyo in Ishirō Honda’s 1954 film, Godzilla has faced off against nearly every single kaiju known to man—Mothra, Ghidorah, Megalon, Gigan, Biollante, etc.—like a champion boxer defending their belts. Its last bout was with King Kong in 2021, and its next will be a rematch against the same opponent in the 2024 Hollywood production Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. But before all that, director Takashi Yamazaki plans to take the monster back to its city-squashing roots with his highly anticipated Japanese production Godzilla Minus One.
Earlier this year, Yamazaki had this to say about what will be the thirty-seventh installment in the Godzilla franchise: “Postwar Japan has lost everything. The film depicts an existence that gives unprecedented despair. The title Godzilla Minus One was created with this in mind. In order to depict this, the staff and I have worked together to create a setting...

Take cover because the monster of mass destruction, Godzilla, is coming to Pluto TV next month, with a channel devoted to the kaiju legend — and a few other iconic monsters. Hey, come to think of it, Godzilla Goes to Pluto would be a great movie!
In an official statement, Pluto hyped their Godzilla channel with the following: “The King of the Monsters has made landfall on Pluto TV! Emerging in 1954, Godzilla has become a global icon and symbol that has transcended time and pop culture. After debuting as a terror that descended upon Tokyo, Godzilla has fought numerous foes and gained new allies over several distinct eras. While each film stands alone in its own moment in time, the evolution of Godzilla followed advancements and film and technology along with cultural trends, yet always staying rooted in the origins from 1954. Between October 6, 1997 and September 30, 1998, 256 episodes of Godzilla Island, a TV series spin-off from the Godzilla film franchise, aired on TV Tokyo in Japan. Twenty-five years later, Godzilla Island is finally getting an official international release, complete with English subtitles… and it’s being released through YouTube! An episode of Godzilla Island will be released on the Godzilla Official by Toho YouTube channel every Tuesday and Thursday.
If you’re a Godzilla fan who hasn’t heard much, if anything, about Godzilla Island, it’s understandable. Each episode of the show is only 3 minutes long, and the kaiju featured on the show weren’t brought to life through “suitmation” like in the Toho movies. Instead, the monsters are portrayed with toys created by Bandai. The first episode of Godzilla Island can be seen in the embed at the bottom of this article, to give you an idea of what the show is like.
