Recalling the first time one of his films screened at the Cannes Film Festival, a young filmmaker remembered how the duration of the standing ovation the audience gave seemed to grow with every retelling in the media. In the room, he clocked about “a six-and-a-half-minute standing ovation, [but] by the time I had got back to L.A., it had grown to 20 minutes,” he said. “I said: ‘Wait a minute, I’m happy with six. I never even had a two-minute ovation.’ ”
That director was Steven Spielberg. The film was E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, which closed the 35th Cannes festival in 1982. Even back then, they were timing standing ovations — and arguing about just how long a festival audience stayed on its feet clapping. There’s a long a tradition of using that figure, preferably inflated, as a marketing hook in your movie’s rollout.

Irish director Lorcan Finnegan – already behind “Vivarium” – returns to Cannes with “The Surfer.” Starring Nicolas Cage, it follows a man who just wants to surf on a beach next to his old childhood home in Australia. But he is not a local anymore and he will have to fight for it – or lose his mind.
Nic’s character actually references “surfing as a metaphor for life.” Why did you want to explore – and maybe also mock – this philosophy?
I met Thomas Martin, who wrote the film, years ago. We wanted to do something together and then he mentioned “The Surfer.” It was about this one man, trying to deal with who he thinks he is and what he actually wants over the course of five days. It felt very contained, challenging and appealing to me as a filmmaker.

Nicolas Cage is all about his family. The actor puts his kids above everything else, even turning down massive roles in movies like The Lord of the Rings and The Matrix because they would have meant being away from home for too long. For Cage, that wasn’t worth it. He chose to stay close to his kids, preferring bedtime stories over Hollywood blockbusters.

Why Nicolas Cage Rejected The Matrix and The Lord of the Rings?
During a conversation with People surrounding The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Nicolas Cage felt compelled to make things clear. While he indeed portrays a version of himself in the film, he emphasizes that this character is far removed from his true persona.

Every time a movie buff hears the name of Marvel’s Ghost Rider, perhaps the first name to ring the bell must be Nicolas Cage’s, for he embodied the anti-hero the most immaculately in his own solo movie series on the character. In fact, his performance was so on-point as Johnny Blaze that many would argue that no one could embody him better than Cage.
Ghost Rider in the comics.
But Cage couldn’t have pulled off this incredible feat just like that. If anything, he went to great lengths and did whatever it required to channel his inner Blaze to give fans as remarkable a performance as he did. And these great lengths that he went to have made it more than evident that perhaps no other actor could play the anti-hero better than the 60-year-old legend.

For those who are unaware of Nicolas Cage’s Hollywood legacy, the actor once played himself in a 2022 movie – The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Although most actors play themselves when it comes to autobiographies or documentaries, Cage apparently played himself in a commercial film, alongside Pedro Pascal.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Dream Scenario, A24’s surreal dark comedy from Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli that plays off Nicolas Cage’s decades-long permeation of the imagination.
In the buzzy Toronto Film Festival title produced by Square Peg — the banner of Hereditary and Beau Is Afraid helmer Ari Aster — Cage stars as Paul Matthews, an ordinary biology professor whose life takes an unexpected turn when he starts appearing in the dreams of people worldwide. Nicolas Cage doesn’t really care if you know he’s related to Francis Ford Coppola.
The actor, best known for his lively performances in flicks such as Con Air and Face/Off, famously changed his name from Nicolas Coppola to Nicolas Cage at the start of his career. He told a boisterous audience this afternoon at the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, that he made the switch for two reasons.
The first appeared to be what Cage described as some early career on-set bullying.
“I did a little movie called Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” Cage said. “When I was on set, some of the other actors couldn’t believe I had talent because I was Coppola’s nephew. They would quote lines from Apocalypse Now and change lines to ‘I love the smell of Nicholas in the mornings instead of napalm in the morning.’”

Actor Nicholas Cage recently opened up about his cameo in ‘The Flash’, where he appears as an alternate version of Superman, much to the surprise of almost everyone. Talking about his cameo, Cage said that while he was happy to do it, he wished it was a longer one.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, speaking to USA Today, Cage said: “Well, I was glad I didn’t blink. For me, it was the feeling of being actualised. Even that look for that particular character, finally seeing it on screen, was satisfying. But as I said, it’s quick.”
The actor was meant to play the Man of Steel in Tim Burton’s cancelled project ‘Superman Lives’ in 1998, following the success of Burton’s Batman movies.
The movie was scrapped and left to rot in development hell for years, before Cage finally, if only briefly ever got his chance to play Superman.

The horror comedy Renfield gives the Dracula story gets a modern twist by re-imagining the vampire’s servant Renfield, played by Nicholas Hoult, as in a co-dependent relationship with his demanding boss/ master Dracula, played with scenery-chewing glee and comic menace by Nicolas Cage. A big part of the real fun of this very bloody horror comedy is in it fabulous recreations of Tod Browning’s classic 1931 Dracula with Bela Lugosi. Hoult does an impressive Dwight Frye as Renfield impression, including that crazy laugh, in these sequences (and occasionally throughout the movie). Nicolas Cage mimics the elegant Bela Lugosi in the recreations of Tod Browning’s classic but otherwise Cage’s Dracula is his own mix of monsters, drawing on more on Christopher Lee and others than Lugosi.

Chris McKay is a director that’s well-loved here at JoBlo. While we loved his work on Robot Chicken at the Lego Batman Movie, many of us here at the site we major fans of The Tomorrow War, Prime Video’s big-budget Chris Pratt sci-fi epic that surprised a lot of us when it came out in the summer of 2021. Now, McKay is back with another ambitious live-action flick, Universal’s Renfield, which re-imagines the Dracula mythos through the eyes of his hapless manservant, played by Nicholas Hoult. And, with Nicolas Cage himself playing the Prince of Darkness, you can bet this will be a blast of fun.

The Universal horror-comedy Renfield reimagines classic horror characters in modern-day New Orleans, with Dracula’s beleaguered henchman realizing he’s been trapped in a toxic relationship for roughly a century.
Bloody Disgusting spent a day on set, getting acquainted with Nicholas Hoult’s new take on Renfield, the bug-eating righthand to Dracula, and learning more about the expansive supernatural world within director Chris McKay’s horror-comedy.
In part one of our set visit, we observed an early scene where Nicholas Hoult’s Renfield arrived late to a battle between Dracula (Nicolas Cage) and a group of vampire hunters. Later in the day, the lucky handful of journalists invited to set witnessed Cage in feral Dracula mode, ruthlessly dispatching his enemies with sharp teeth and claws.

So, all savvy filmgoers know that the season for big, noisy action blockbusters is the Summertime (when the livin’ is easy), but with Spring break looming, well, why wait for some popcorn escapism? After all, we’re right in the middle of two big superhero franchise entries (from the competing studios), and a few days away from a thriller in a horror series, not to mention a sports sequel that opens on the same day. It may just be the perfect time for a spy spectacular since Bond is in flux, Bourne is in limbo, and Mr. Cruise is about to trade in his flight suit for a tux full of nifty gadgets. I’m sure this new movie hopes to begin a “tentpole”, as it mixes in some satire and some “caper” elements. Plus there’s a fan-favorite director behind Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre.

It’s been a memorable few years for Nicolas Cage, or at least it looks that way to his sizable fan base.
A noted period of extremely prolific yet mostly uncelebrated work in the low-budget world of filmmaking was punctured by a ferocious performance in Panos Cosmatos’ wild action horror Mandy in 2018, while his uncharacteristically quiet — but equally intense — turn in last year’s Pig would bring him the sort of critical acclaim not seen since he won an Oscar for 1995’s Leaving Las Vegas.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High’s ascension to comedy classic was a slow process.
Amy Heckerling, who had only directed student work to that point, was set to helm an MGM project when it was scrapped amid an actors strike. During the hiatus, producer Art Linson introduced her to Cameron Crowe’s 1981 book, Fast Times at Ridgemont High: A True Story, which the young journalist wrote after spending a year undercover as a high school student.
Linson asked Heckerling to direct Crowe’s screenplay, a fictionalization of real students that focused on Stacy Hamilton (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a sophomore navigating social dynamics and early sexual experiences. The comedy launched the careers of future Oscar winners Sean Penn, as lovable stoner Jeff Spicoli, and Forest Whitaker, playing jock Charles Jefferson — not to mention a teenage Nicolas Cage, credited as Nicolas Coppola in a small role for his first film.

I admit I didn’t really notice Nicolas Cage (then billed as Nicola Coppola) in his debut, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, but I quickly became a fan after seeing him in 1984’s underrated Racing with the Moon. Since then, he has made dozens of movies, across the genres, going from romantic lead to tortured lead to action lead and back again.
Despite making all of these films, earning numerous nominations and earning an Academy Award, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, and numerous local critics’ awards, Cage has never quite gotten the respect his work deserves. Some of that is because of questionable career choices as well as an outsized public life that has garnered embarrassing headlines and unwanted notoriety.

The VFX team on “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” is no stranger to the intensive process of de-aging a known figure such as Nicolas Cage. For the film, the team was tasked to make Cage, who is 58 years old, appear about 20-25 years younger for the character of Nicky Cage. Nicky, Cage’s imagined younger self in the film, aims to keep the character of Nick Cage (with a K) on the road of being an uber-popular celebrity. The film’s visual effects team, headed by VFX supervisor Christopher Lance for the scenes shot in America, teamed up with CoSa VFX to bring Nicky to the big screen.
“Tom [Gormican] and Nic came up with the idea of Nicky from a specific persona that Nic created for an interview that he did on the Wogan show,” Lance told Variety. “But we were actually going for the look of his face,...

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is being deemed as Nicholas Cage’s ultimate comeback, but is the latest action-comedy feature truly a memorable Cage film that’s bound to be in the memories of viewers for years to come? The film stars Nicholas Cage as…well Nick Cage! The veteran is down on his luck, stuck in a financial crisis, and is striking out when it comes to his daughter and ex-wife. However, once a movie deal falls through, Cage must accept a 1 million offer to attend the birthday of a superfan. Unbeknownst to Mr. Cage, Javi Gutierrez is currently under

Lily Sheen has taken some of her personal experiences to the big screen. In an interview with Los Angeles Magazine published April 26, Lily, 23, touched on her latest project, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and how playing the daughter of a Hollywood star is a role she knows well—difficult moments and all. The movie stars Nicolas Cage as Nick Cage, a fictional version of himself who is recruited by a CIA operative for a high-stakes mission. Lily—who is herself the daughter of actors Kate Beckinsale and Michael Sheen—plays his daughter Addy. "I was lucky enough to not have this exact upbringing," she told the publication, "but having a dad that is Nick Cage,...

Getting a major Hollywood star to be in your movie is never an easy task, but it’s doubly difficult when a role was specifically written for one actor. That was certainly the case with “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” which stars Nicolas Cage as a fictionalized version of himself.
The film was written by Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten, who wrote the script before they ever met Nicolas Cage. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the two men shed light on the difficult process of shopping a script that only one actor could star in.
“We were told that Nick has done these projects before and he’s not wild about Nick as Nick,” Etten said. “And we weren’t two guys who had a huge body of work that you could point to and be like, ‘No, trust us.'”

Much ado has been made about Nicolas Cage’s larger-than-life movies and acting panache. The Oscar winner— whose cinematic presence has endured throughout four decades — has headlined countless genres, including B movies-turned-cult classics (“Vampire’s Kiss”), action blockbusters (“Face/Off”), romantic comedies (“Moonstruck”), weighty dramas (“Leaving Las Vegas”), independent projects (“Pig”) and trippy indies (“Adaptation.”). It’s this versatility of character portrayals, varying degrees of flamboyant line delivery and an extraordinary off-screen persona that have transformed Cage into an unwitting walking, talking (and sometimes yelling) meme.
The memeification of Cage has in and of itself spurred a Cage-ification of pop culture, and that’s the foundation for Lionsgate’s “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” which stars Cage as his greatest character yet — himself. Rather, a fictionalized, off-the-wall and sometimes CGI-produced young version of himself.

The streaming service Netflix pulled the plug on the sequel to Will Smith’s Bright following the controversy at The Oscars.
“It appears that Netflix will not be moving forward with a sequel to Bright. While Bright 2 was confirmed in 2018 with an orc audition, Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw revealed that Netflix has ‘abandoned plans to make a sequel to Bright,’ but disclosed that it was not related to the recent slap incident at the Oscars.”

Speaking of Netflix, The first-quarter reports are in, and it isn’t looking too hot a fourth of the way into 2022.
“In the first quarter of 2022 (January 1 to March 31), Netflix lost a net 200,000 subscribers, making it the first time in over a decade that the streaming service didn’t grow in subscriptions. If this weren’t bad enough, the loss was on the backdrop of Netflix projecting a 2,500,000 subscriber gain.

Nicolas Cage And Pedro Pascal Took A 'No Acting' Approach To The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent
"The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent" is finally in theaters, which means audiences can experience one of the weirdest, most bizarre movies of the year ... and one of the most wholesome. The film stars Nicolas Cage as Nick Cage, an incredibly neurotic fictional version of himself who is going through a bad batch of financial troubles. After losing out on the movie of his dreams, Cage (the fake one) takes a job appearing at the birthday party of an eccentric billionaire named Javi (Pedro Pascal).
The initial trailers focused on the weirdness of seeing Nic Cage play himself (and...

When The Irishman innovated de-aging effects in 2019, few could have foreseen its use to resurrect the batshit, snake skinned Nicolas Cage of 1990’s Wild at Heart. Fewer still would have expected this iteration of Nicolas Cage to appear on screen next to… Nicolas Cage.Seeing the Nick Cage of 2022 argue, fight and even make out with his 26-year-old self are the most outrageous meta moments of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Tom Gormican’s smartly realised buddy film.
Now, Cage has long been one of Hollywood’s leading idiosyncrasies, building a lengthy filmography that ranges from the bargain bin to the Academy Awards. Yet this filmwould not have worked 10 years ago, even though it draws on his ‘90s blockbusters such as The Rock and Face/Off.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent! Starring Nicolas Cage as Nick Cage!
I went into this movie knowing nothing more about it than that. And I was vindicated in my advance presumption that pretty much everything you need to know about it is encapsulated in that summation. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Much of your own personal assessment of that will depend, I suspect, upon what you think of Nicolas Cage as an actor and entertainer. And what you think of the current rather sorry state of American movies.
Our reactions to movies, of course, are never not about all the baggage we bring with us into the cinema (or however you watch a film), but that is amplified here. I am a big fan of Cage’s work when he is allowed to be honest and sincere; his performance in last year’s anti-revenge drama Pig may be his finest,...

When Nicolas Cage was first approached about playing a slightly-psychotic version of himself in the movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, he was more than a little hesitant about signing on for it. His fears only grew when he learned that the “Nicolas Cage” character in the movie would be near broke, living in a hotel, quasi-estranged from his wife and teenage daughter, and reduced to making a personal appearance at a birthday party for a wealthy fan in order to pay off his debt. There’s even a recurring bit where a manic,...

Nicolas Cage has transcended pop culture. The legendary actor has won an Oscar, starred in both blockbusters and indie titles, inspired internet memes and stolen the Declaration of Independence. Now, he’s being honored in the most Cage way possible, by starring as a version of himself, called Nick Cage, in the new Lionsgate movie “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.”
However, when Cage first got the pitch for the meta-comedy-drama-action film, his first response was “absolute horror.”
“There was no muscle in my body that told me I should play a character named Nick Cage, it was absolute horror,” he told Variety at the New York premiere on Sunday. “However, the director wrote me a very intelligent, sensitive letter, and in that letter I knew he was a true film enthusiast that likes some of the earlier work. He wanted to make a movie that was about people, not about caricatures or cartoons.

This month’s release of “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” a buddy comedy that stars Nicolas Cage as himself, has led to a renewed interest in the actor’s eclectic filmography. While films like “Face/Off” and “Leaving Las Vegas” have always been beloved, many cinephiles are using Cage’s moment in the spotlight to discover the excellent work he has done in small films like “Mandy” and “Color Out of Space.”
While Cage devotees have praised the actor’s recent work for years, his critically lauded performance in “Pig” reminded much of the world of Cage’s acting ability. With more of the film industry paying attention to the actor’s massive talent, many fans are understandably excited about the projects Cage will choose to work on next.

This past weekend, the 2022 SXSW Film Festival hosted the world premiere of the meta genre-bending comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which was directed by Tom Gormican and co-written by Gormican and Kevin Etten. The story is set around the iconic cinematic phenom known as Nicolas Cage, who is down on his luck and decides to take a gig where he’s paid to show up at a superfan’s (played by Pedro Pascal) birthday party and ends up getting mixed up in some governmental espionage where things get just a little too “real” for Cage and his new best pal.
While in Austin, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with both Gormican and Etten following the premiere of Massive Talent about the unusual project and whether or not they ever thought about what would happen if Cage had turned down playing a version of himself for the film.

Nicolas Cage’s sometimes over-the-top performances, complete with meme-worthy lifted brows and bulging eyeballs, are getting their own showcase. “People think I’m not in on the joke,” the headline of his 2013 Guardian profile reads. Lest there be any doubt, he’s now acted in and produced a feature-length film to prove his point.
Channeling the meta-ness of “Adaptation,” Cage stars in “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” as a debt-ridden, washed-up actor named Nick Cage and as Nicky, his alter ego and a bad angel of sorts who appears to be 1980s-vintage Cage, here to facilitate internal dialogue. Per the film’s concocted biographical details, he has an ex-wife named Olivia (Sharon Horgan), a makeup artist he met on the set of “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin,” and a teenage daughter named Addy (Lily Mo Sheen), who thinks Humphrey Bogart was an adult film performer.

Hello, dear readers! On Friday, March 11th, the 2022 SXSW Film Festival will be kicking off, and Daily Dead will be on the ground in Austin to check out all of this year’s genre projects.
