Host Ken Jennings said this year’s Tournament of Champions games “promise some of the best Jeopardy! ever played,” and Friday’s quarterfinals opener lived up to that lofty expectation. When it came time for the Final Jeopardy! round, Season 39 six-time champ Suresh Krishnan had a score of $0 and was eliminated from the competition, Season 39 four-time champ Matthew Marcus had a score of $7,400, and Season 37 three-time champ Emily Sands had a runaway score of $21,800. No matter what Matthew wagered, he couldn’t catch up to Emily, who had earned her spot in the ToC with her Champions Wildcard win last year. Earlier in Friday’s game, Emily bet big during a Daily Double, adding $7,000 to her score by identifying the Capuchins as the order of friars with 3,500 skulls housed in a Roman church. Suresh, on the other hand, missed two all-or-nothing Daily Double attempts — one involving a “witty city ditty...

When the actors in the SAG-AFTRA guild joined their writing counterparts in the WGA in going on strike, nearly all production in Hollywood came to a grinding halt. That result certainly made sense as most of the entertainment we consume employs the services of actors and writers.
But what about game shows? Surely, those won’t be affected by AMPTP’s refusal to negotiate with writers and actors in good faith! Well, as Jeopardy!‘s producers already know and as fans will soon find out, the trivia show’s clue writers are in the WGA too … and they would also like to be properly compensated for their work, believe it or not.
Ever since it first premiered in the 1960s, venerable quiz show Jeopardy! has featured questions (or “answers” as they’re know in the show’s goofy parlance) written by a staff of dedicated researchers and writers. While the...

“Jeopardy!’s” Tournament of Champions has a bigger problem on its hands than trivia this year.
Starting with a Reddit post made on Friday by 13-time “Jeopardy!” winner Ray Lalonde, several prominent contestants have pledged not to return to the series to compete in the Tournament of Champions in solidarity with the Writers Guild of America, as the series employs WGA members.
Lalonde, an IATSE member who works in scenic design, wrote that that there were “credible reports that the producers are making contingency plans to start filming the next season of the show with old and/or recycled material if the WGA strike remains unresolved.” Lalonde then went on to praise “Jeopardy!” writers for their work and their current efforts to secure a new deal with the studios, before making a promise to support them. “As a supporter of the trade union movement, a union member’s son and...

Questions are swirling around the viability of Jeopardy! Season 40 amid the ongoing writers’ strike, with a delay looking increasingly likely.
Amid talk that the game show’s producer, Sony Pictures Television, is mulling a number of strike workarounds — including recycling old questions — several Tournament of Champions contestants say they will not appear on Jeopardy! until the work stoppage is resolved. Production on Season 40 is set to get underway in mid-August, with the annual Toc typically among the first episodes to be shot. The final episode of Season 39, meanwhile, airs this Friday.

The annual Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions is being pushed back.
After several big winners from the 2022-23 season say they won’t take part in the tournament while the writers strike is ongoing, producer Sony Pictures TV said late Tuesday that it “never had any intention” to tape the tournament until after the strike is resolved.
Jeopardy! employs Writers Guild of America members, and the syndicated game show is planning to rely on material from prior seasons (39 years’ worth) as it begins taping shows for the 2023-24 season, the show noted in its statement Tuesday. The Tournament of Champions usually tapes in late August and September but will be moved until after the strike.
Ray Lalonde, a TV set builder and painter from Toronto who won $386,400 over 13 games last season, told The Washington Post that he emailed the show’s producers on July 21 to say he wouldn’t take part...

When all three contestants on this week’s “Jeopardy!” failed to recognize The Lord’s Prayer, plenty of social media users took it as a sign that the country is doomed, or that people needed to be listening to more heavy metal.
The answer to the $200 question, “Our father, who art in heaven, [this] be thy name,” was “hallowed,” but neither Suresh Krishnan, Laura Blyler or Joe Seibert buzzed in to try to answer it.
The prayer, which is from the book of Matthew in the Christian Bible, has inspired many songs, including Iron Maiden’s 1982 track “Hallowed Be Thy Name.” “How can those Jeopardy! nerds not know this answer. Have they never listened to Iron Maiden?” a Twitter user joked.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the June 14, 2023 episode of Jeopardy!] Suresh Krishnan’s Jeopardy! streak has ended. Holly Hassel became the gameshow’s new champ during the Wednesday, June 14 episode, bringing an end to Suresh’s six-day winning streak. Holly, an English professor from Fargo, North Dakota, dominated most of the game, with Neilay Amin, a psychiatrist from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, pulling out in front by just $200 in the second round. A Daily Double win helped Holly snag her lead early on. By the time of the first break, she was in the lead at $2,600. Suresh was in second at $0, and Neilay was sitting in third at -$800. Going into round two, the trailing players had redeemed themselves, but Suresh still had not taken the lead. The scores were Holly with $5,200, Suresh with $2,000, and Neilay with $800. Neilay found the second Daily Double, which helped him move up to first place. By the time he found it, his competitors were ...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the June 13 episode of Jeopardy!] In the June 13 episode of Jeopardy!, five-day champion Suresh Krishnan had to defend his $53,999 total winnings against nonprofit fundraiser Laura Blyler Scanland and graduate student Joe Siebert. But as the game went on, people began to notice all the triple stumpers going on throughout, especially one that involved The Lord’s Prayer. As the game kicked off, host Mayim Bialik began to read the clue “Matthew 6:9 says, ‘Our Father, which art in heaven, [this] be thy name,” leaving all three contestants stumped on “hallowed.” This caused an uproar on Twitter, with users calling questions toward the contestants. “That’s “hallowed,” you heathens! #Jeopardy,” one user tweeted. Others went on to say, “Jeez these #Jeopardy contestants can’t solve clues about The Lord’s Prayer, Big Daddy and Elizabeth Taylor – I give up .” Going into Double Jeopardy, Krishnan had $5,000, Laura $200, and Joe 3,200. Joe begrudgingly got the Daily Double, which ...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the June 12 episode of Jeopardy!] Heading into the June 12 episode of Jeopardy!, the focus was on returning champion Suresh Krishnan, who came in with a four-day total of $53,999. But what also caught people’s eye was one of the other contestants, data analyst Michael Vallely, who had audience members and host Mayim Bialik laughing with some of his responses. First, during the contestant interviews, he shared that he’s in an online support group for young or young-ish people with cancer, and every night, he plays Jeopardy! with one of the founders, comparing stores. A few months ago, he got everything wrong in a category about Disney movies. “[The group founder] told me, ‘What is wrong with you? You gotta watch Disney movies,’” Michael shared. “I’ve been trying to and I think I’m ready now. I know there’s dogs that eat spaghetti, there’s a circus with a flying hippo ...

Former President Donald Trump has reportedly been indicted in connection with a federal investigation surrounding his handling of government documents after he left the White House, and Jeopardy! fans weren’t thrilled to have their game show interrupted over the breaking news. The evening broadcast of the fan-favorite was disrupted by national news which chimed in to inform viewers of the story regarding the 45th president. Trump shared the information on his Truth Social where he wrote in a lengthy thread, “I never thought it possible that such a thing could happen to a former President of the United States, who received far more votes than any sitting President in the History of our Country, and is currently leading, by far, all Candidates, both Democrat and Republican, in Polls of the 2024 Presidential Election. I Am An Innocent Man!” This information forced fans away from the game going on between two-day champion Suresh Krishnan,...

Wednesday night’s “Jeopardy!” contained 23 triple stumpers, meaning none of the three contestants guessed at all, making the Coryat, or final score, the lowest this season.
Competitor Collette Lee addressed the challenging game on Reddit.
“Collette here – Kristine [Rembach] and I commented on that to each other before Final, saying that we were worried we’d go viral for not knowing anything!” Lee wrote. “I personally tried to ‘keep calm and clam up’ to try to avoid ending up in the red with bad guesses but as the game wore on, especially in Double Jeopardy it was obvious we were collectively riding the struggle bus with our board!”

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the June 6 episode of Jeopardy!] Three-day champ Jared Watson performed strongly against newcomers Suresh Krishnan, a networking engineer, and writer Deborah Claymon during the June 6 episode of Jeopardy!. However, the contestants also played sharply, throwing a possible four-day winning streak and increase to his $56,202 into question. As host Mayim Bialik ushered the players into Double Jeopardy, Jared led the pack with $3,800 after losing $4,000 in the first round’s Daily Double, Suresh at $3,400, and Deborah with negative $400. Although he maintained complete dominance during the round, Jared missed the second Daily Double, subtracting $3,000 from his total $9,800. Then Suresh was able to answer the third and last Daily Double correctly, adding $2,600 to his score of $5,400. However, it did not match Jared’s ability to answer every other question correctly thereafter, even sweeping the Books & Authors category in the process. Jeopardy Inc. Going into Final Jeopardy, the scores were $12,800 for Jared, Suresh at $7,600, and Deborah at $600. ...
