Since the Premier League began back in 1992, we’ve been treated to some extraordinary talent. Whether it be gifted goal-scorers like Thierry Henry, cat-like shot-stoppers like Peter Schmeichel or midfield maestros like Steven Gerrard, England has been truly blessed with some of the world’s best.
Football is no fairytale land, however. Not all remarkably talented individuals go on to do great things, and not all go on to have a well-sustained career. For every player that made it to the top, there are dozens that never quite made the grade in England’s top flight. It only takes one tackle, one turn or one traumatic experience to bring an abrupt end to any player’s footballing journey – regardless of their reputation, potential and talent.
Who really remembers the ‘could-have-beens’ though? Sporting history tends not to care for those that could have achieved amazing things, but fell...

The Delta Mirror’s frontman Chris Acosta spent years performing under the moniker Craig Gordon, but the band’s latest release Better Unsung is a more personal look into Gordon’s life and features an impressive array of collaborations, including Anticon Records co-founder Alias and Blue Sky Black Death. “In high school I was a backpack-toting, tape-trading underground hip-hop goofball, and the holy grail of that movement was Anticon Records,” said Acosta. “So working on this record with Alias was a dream come true for me. His drums aren’t always what I had in mind, but they lend a completely new identity to...

Two in-form teams meet at The Stadium of Light on Saturday as Swansea make the long trip up North to Sunderland.
Fellow countrymen Brendan Rodgers and Martin O’Neill have steered their respective sides to a safe distance from the relegation zone with a string of decent results. Swansea’s famous victory against Arsenal last Sunday moved them into the top half of the table whilst O’Neill has successfully picked up the pieces in the North-East, since Steve Bruce’s dismissal in late November.
Since his appointment after in December, Martin O’Neill has made The Stadium of Light a fortress for his team and he’ll be hoping to add the Swans to the growing list of victories secured at home.
The team’s tireless efforts whilst playing at in front of their own fans can be outlined by the manner of their home victories since O’Neill took over.

Just two days after their incredible victory against top of the table Manchester City at the Stadium of Light, Martin O’Neill takes his newly spirited Sunderland side to Wigan for a 7.45pm kick-off tonight. This is the side whose win against a dejected Wearsiders back in November cost former manager Steve Bruce his job at the North East club and it will be interesting to see how their fortunes fare tonight after the jubilations of Sunday evening.
Sunderland are finally gathering some momentum. They have taken as many points in O’Neill’s five games in charge as Steve Bruce managed in a dozen Premier League games previous this season and suddenly there’s a confidence with the Black Cats. They worked so hard against Manchester City and frustrated them so much that they kept out their high-earning stars and they willed the most memorable of goals at the death.

It’s New Years Day and a new year at the Stadium of Light. Finally 2012 is here for the Black Cats and they can put the misery of the past year behind them. Rewind the clocks back to this time last year and Sunderland were riding high looking like they could be genuine contenders for Europe, only to crumble quickly over the next 12 months, resulting in the slow torture of the past few months and the eventual sacking of Steve Bruce to put him out of his misery.
Sunderland have a new manager in their ranks with Martin O’Neill and although performances haven’t been great in his two games against Blackburn and Everton, the attitude of the Wearsiders have improved and you get a sense that once O’Neill gets it right with his team that they will quickly move beyond relegation waters.

2012 will be a new year for Sunderland in more ways than merely chronologically. It has to be, after a disappointing 2011 which saw the popular demise of Steve Bruce, the sideways movement of former chairman Niall Quinn and the loss of several high-profile “star players” like Darren Bent, Jordan Henderson and Asamoah Gyan (who we may yet see again in red and white after his bank-busting loan at Al Ain runs out).
In the shape of Martin O’Neill, Sunderland have made what would appear to be a strong managerial appointment: he has a wealth of experience in the Premiership, and he knows how to win thanks to time spent north of the border shooting fish in a barrel as Celtic manager, and perhaps crucially, he has passion for the club that he know finds himself in charge of. His first job must surely have been to instil some confidence into the dressing room,...

Harry Redknapp’s Spurs side were extremely unlikely to lose their 11-match unbeaten run last Sunday at Stoke after countless infuriating referring decisions but they must pick themselves up for the game today against Sunderland if they have ambitions to stay with the leading pack. Some say they won’t be able to sustain their fabulous form but here we are a week before Christmas and if they get three points today, they are still realistic dark horses for the title.
They welcome Martin O’Neill’s new side to White Hart Lane where the Black Cats have only won once in their past twenty visits (a run that stretches back to 1978) but the North East club will feel like they have somewhat turned the corner after last week’s comeback victory against Blackburn Rovers. As often happens when a new manager arrives and lifts a club, they will believe their fortunes have changed.

New manager breeds a new start for what almost feels like a New Year come early for Sunderland as Martin O’Neill takes charge of the Black Cats today for the 1.30pm kick-off against Blackburn Rovers. They will be pleased as punch to see the calendar tick over to 2012 in a few weeks after an abysmal year where they dropped what was a promising campaign heading for European contention to almost sinking out of the league and carrying a dreadful home form into this season. They have only won two out of their last 16 in all competitions on this ground.
2011 did start ever so brightly with a 3-0 win over Blackburn on this ground and it will be that kind of result that O’Neill will be desperate to see from his new boys today. Though it is interesting to note that Danny Welbeck, Asamoah Gyan and Darren Bent were the goalscorers today,...

A fresh start for The Wearsiders today as they travel to Wolves, their players knowing that they have something of a fresh slate with new manager Martin O’Neill (who will be in the stands today, assistant manager Eric Black in charge until Monday) and the impetus is there to impress their new gaffer. It was obvious in the last couple of weeks that former boss Steve Bruce had lost not only the support of his players but of the fans too and with a new manager in it will hopefully bring better horizons. It sure does feel a lot longer than six months ago when Bruce led Sunderland to their highest top flight finish in a decade.

Steve Bruce and his Sunderland team come up this afternoon against the one man they could have done with this year, former striker Darren Bent. His sudden departure from the club back in January left a gaping hole in the front line and is often pointed as being the catalayst for the Wearsiders downfall. I imagine a frosty reception will await him when he returns to The Stadium of the Light for the first time as an Aston Villa player.
In the pre-match press conference, Bruce revealed that he felt “massively let down” when Bent left the club for a record fee in January was how Steve Bruce described his feelings regarding Darren Bent’s unexpected departure to Aston Villa back in January and the move certainly raised eyebrows at the time. Villa were then a struggling side and quickly after the move Sunderland completed a league double over their...

They may have given Arsenal a lot to think about in their game last Sunday, only losing it late at the Emirates, but good performances and plenty of effort alone isn’t going to keep Steve Bruce in a job at Sunderland and the longer they go without winning games, the more pressure will be on owner Ellis Short to get rid.
They are searching for their first away win of the season today at Bolton, another struggling side who are on the same points as The Wearsiders. Despite winning away at Wigan last week, Bolton are still in the bottom three of the table and with -10 goals against, actually have the worst goal difference in the league. They also have lost all their home games this season and the habit of dredding playing in front of a contentious Reebok crowd is something you want to get rid of as soon as possible.

Outside of Blackburn boss Steve Kean, there aren’t two other Premier League managers under more pressure than Arsene Wenger and Steve Bruce, whose Arsenal and Sunderland sides respectively have had hugely disappointing starts to the new season and just can’t seem to get any momentum going to climb the table.
The sides meet at the Emirates today in a 1.30pm live televised Sky Sports game where both managers blood pressures are likely to shoot through the roof. Arsenal currently lie in 15th position with 7 points in 7 games (and minus 6 goal difference!), Sunderland 16th with a point less. If they stay in these positions much longer it’ll be a crisis point for both.
Sunderland will be desperate to get some points on the board today having failed to beat any of the three newly promoted teams (which were probably outlined as 9 points they should obtain) and their fans...

Paul Lambert and Steve Bruce go into tonight’s live televised Norwich vs. Sunderland game on Sky Sports Monday Night Football both likely to have earmarked the game as highly winnable. Both teams have five points to their name this campaign and under the scrutiny of live television camera’s will be going at it hammer and tongs tonight, especially the home side thinking there’s more likely to be points to be had tonight rather than at Old Trafford next time out.
Bruce will be buoyed by the way his team slaughtered Stoke 4-0 at home last weekend, reacting extremely well for their manager who had started to come under a lot of pressure from the fans and in the media after the Black Cats’ poor 2011. And he returns tonight to Carrow Road, the team he captained for three years as a player in the mid 80′s, hoping to...

The one song that Steve Bruce probably wouldn’t appreciate hearing on the radio driving through to work for today’s 3pm Premier League tie against Stoke at The Stadium of Light would be David Bowie’s “Under Pressure”. Though in truth, the track would be apt and there’s already some predicting he might be the first manager to get the chop this season if he doesn’t have a good run of games between now and Halloween.
His side’s fall from grace has been well documented. Sunderland were pushing for a European spot back in January but the departure of star striker Darren Bent, a lengthy injury period for Danny Welbeck and the failure to replace either of them coincided with a freefall the likes of which England’s Premier division has rarely seen, earning just 12 points from a possible 54 on offer… just 3 wins in 18 attempts. Bruce...

Can we expect a 0-0 draw from the Sunderland vs. Chelsea match this afternoon in the big 3pm Premier League kick-off of the day at the Stadium of the Light? Chelsea have failed to score in two successive away games (opening game against Stoke and a tail ender last season against Everton) whilst Sunderland have only scored once this season (including an impotent almost full strength squad in the League cup at Brighton) with star striker Asamoah Gyan under-performing and this week having his head turned by putting in a transfer request for a move to Turkey by ‘parasite agents’ as Steve Bruce called them, offering him bigger wages. In the end Gyan stayed but he is ruled out today through injury, not because of the parasite bites, but a hamstring pull during International duty with Ghana.
