The past two weekends at the box office have been, in a word, miserable. Yes, "Challengers" won this most recent frame with a $15 million opening, but the total take for the weekend domestically was just over $60 million. Last weekend, when "Abigail" and Guy Ritchie's "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" underperformed, the weekend total was barely above $65 million. When total ticket sales for a weekend are less than what would be a so-so opening weekend for a summer blockbuster, things are dire. Fortunately, there are a couple of bright spots among the darkness.
On its fifth weekend in theaters, "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" pulled in $7.2 million domestically, dropping just 25% from weekend four. It held the number three spot on the charts behind this weekend's newcomers, "Challengers" and "Unsung Hero" ($7.75 million). That was also enough to bring it past the $500 million mark globally. It's been six movies since Gareth Edwards' "Godzilla" in 2014, and Adam Wingard seems to have finally cracked the code. Wingard's sublimely silly "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" happily abandoned all the portent and dourness of the first MonsterVerse movie, choosing instead to celebrate shallow monster mayhem and sugared-up, Saturday-morning-ready fantasy conceits that gleefully abandon logic. Kong lives in the Hollow Earth and fights jackal monsters, while Godzilla rules the surface world where he fights crabs and naps in the Colosseum. These are the basic tenets of a skewed universe lousy with monsters. There are magical stones under the earth that control gravity and miniature wormholes that monsters use to teleport around the planet. Everything is wild and nothing makes sense. And there is an integrity to that.
It seems, however, that there was some injection of actual reality into the film's production. Wingard and his crew filmed "Godzilla x Kong" in Gold Coast,...

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire continues the success streak of the Kaiju-verse following Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and Godzilla Minus One. The film showed the triumphant return of frenemies Kong and Godzilla after their intense brawl in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. While critics were mixed on the film, audiences lapped up the epic reunion of the two monsters.

A pair of Warner Bros. releases have achieved some important box office milestones.

Both films were produced in partnership with Legendary Entertainment.

Anyone who has seen "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" — and going by the film's impressive box-office numbers, that oughta be most of you out there — knows that Dan Stevens is an absolute delight in it. To be fair, this isn't a huge surprise, as anyone who's been following Stevens' on-screen career knows that the actor is routinely a highlight of everything he appears in, whether he's the lead in something like FX's "Legion" and "GxK" director Adam Wingard's "The Guest" or (and sometimes especially) when he's appearing as a supporting character in films like "Colossal" or this month's "Abigail."
His role of Trapper in "GxK" seems particularly special, however, given that Stevens isn't merely playing a comic relief character. Instead, he's some unique combination of a wonder-filled adventurer, an animal-loving veterinarian, and a laid-back hippie dude. That's just one way of describing Trapper, however — Stevens himself has...

"The Blair Witch Project" is back in the news. First, word recently broke that a new "Blair Witch" movie is in the works from Blumhouse and Lionsgate. This was greeted as less-than-ideal information by the folks involved with the original movie, who feel they should be involved with the new film, too, and who can blame them? Then came word that the original cast members of the first film were asking for residuals for the use of their likenesses throughout the franchise.
In short, things seem messy in "Blair Witch" world. Talk about scary! But let's look beyond these recent headlines and back at the franchise itself. As of now, there are three feature films. There are also a handful of excellent made-for-tv faux documentaries that served as tie-ins for the films, but we won't be touching on those here. Instead, we're going to focus on the three theatrical releases: "The Blair Witch Project,...

The MonsterVerse continues to be a winning franchise for Warner Bros. and Legendary as "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" had another good weekend at the box office. While it was, all around, a bad weekend for theaters with not one but three new releases underperforming, the latest kaiju brawl in this ever-expanding universe held strong in its fourth weekend of release. It now ranks as the biggest entry in the franchise since 2017, surpassing 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong."
Director Adam Wingard's "The New Empire" pulled in $9.5 million in its fourth frame, placing third on the charts behind A24's "Civil War" ($11.1 million), which was in its second weekend, and Universal's "Abigail" ($10.2 million), which was new to theaters. The latest MonsterVerse film dropped just 38%, demonstrating an excellent hold week-to-week. Part of that has to do with a lack of direct competition in the marketplace but, either way, it's good news for WB and Legendary.

Dan Stevens is having the time of his life as Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has become a big hit for Warner Bros and Legendary. His latest release Abigail has also received great reviews from critics and audiences, with many praising his performance. His versatility in switching from a delightfully charming role to an intense individual in the two films is impressive, to say the least.

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire brought American audiences into the fun schlock that defined a run of the Godzilla movies which is called the “Showa era.” This era is basically what people think of when you bring up Godzilla because it’s all about the giant monster battles. The movies are also usually given an out-there, psychedelic plot that drives the monsters into fighting each other. Godzilla X Kong was a smashing success at the box office and has the studio confident in its upcoming plans for sequels. Legendary’s chairman, Mary Parent, would state, “This (box office) is certainly an exciting result. We are in a good position to continue the journey, but let’s see how Godzilla x Kong unfolds. These are early days, but we are certainly feeling good.“

Introducing a More Intimate MonsterVerse In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, director Adam Wingard made a conscious decision to not repeat the perceived shortcomings of Gareth Edwards’ approach in the earlier MonsterVerse films. Specific criticism pointed towards Edwards focused on the distant handling of the titular creatures, often leaving audiences craving more substantial engagement with these iconic giants. Adam Wingard took this feedback into account, ensuring his adaptation brought the audience closer to the colossal titans. He implemented advanced technologies and innovative techniques to enhance both character development and audience engagement. A Deep Dive into Skar King’s Design One

It’s been less than 12 years since Dan Stevens raised a middle finger to the British aristocracy, quitting “Downton Abbey” as the show neared its Emmy-amassing zenith and setting sail for America with his family. As he admits, he had “absolutely no idea” what was going to happen to him.
“There was no roadmap,” the 41-year-old actor explains with frank honestly about a decision that, at the time, was considered by many to be sheer lunacy. “I left ‘Downton’ with a blank slate. It was just, ‘I think I want to do other things.’ But I didn’t know what that looked like.”
To have an idea of what that currently looks like, anyone need just head to their nearest cinema, where Stevens is going head-to-head against himself in two of the biggest studio releases of the season. In what has become something of a calling card for the Brit...

The John Woo identity switch film Face/Off is one of those 90s action movies that is memorable for good and bad reasons. With such a far-out concept and a beautiful excess of mayhem mixed with some fun drama, it’s easy to see why it made a mark the way it did, much more than Woo’s previous American effort, Broken Arrow, which was a more run-of-the-mill action movie. It’s also a film that seems like a one-and-done for the stars, no matter how much Paramount would want to franchise the title.

Face/Off 2 has been on the cards for years – and now it looks as though Nicolas Cage and John Travolta might be back.
Face/Off remains as one of the most high-concept action movies of the 1990s – no small feat considering this was an era when the genre was stuffed to the gills with interesting and inventive movies trying to reframe explosions, fisticuffs and gunfights in new and unique ways.
The first film (in which Nicolas Cage starred opposite John Travolta) remains a stone-cold action classic to this day with its bizarre ‘face switching’ premise only furthering to distinguish it from the deluge of other brilliant haction movies from the same era.
Over the last three or four years, talk has circulated that a sequel to Face/Off is on the cards. John Woo wouldn’t be returning and the film would instead be helmed by Adam Wingard. Wingard’s latest action blockbuster,...

The iconic action film of the ‘90s Face/Off is reportedly getting a sequel after almost three decades. The John Woo directorial starred Nicolas Cage and John Travolta as the leads, swapping faces to best each other in a cat-and-mouse chase. The film gained a cult following upon release and earned $245 million at the box office.
The sequel was announced back in 2021, with Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard taking over the reins as director. At the time it was reported that the film would recast the leads, despite taking off from where the first film ended. However, an insider reported that Travolta and Cage might return for the sequel.

For a full decade now, Warner Bros. and Legendary have been bringing Godzilla and many other classic monsters to the big screen via the MonsterVerse. Beginning with 2014's "Godzilla," this universe has brought Toho's beloved creations — as well as some brand new beasts — to audiences around the world. In stark contrast to 1998's "Godzilla," these Hollywood-produced takes on the long-running franchise have worked like gangbusters as blockbuster crowdpleasers. Five movies (and a TV show) later, the MonsterVerse is showing no signs of slowing down.
While other cinematic universes have come and gone over the years, largely because they bit off more than they could chew, the MonsterVerse has succeeded by being patient and letting audiences be hungry for more. Most recently, "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" proved that moviegoers were happy to show up for a big, ridiculous ride just months after the very serious, Oscar-winning "Godzilla Minus One" left theaters.

As Blumhouse announces it’s making a reboot of the 1999 classic horror The Blair Witch Project, we look at how it could expand on the original’s lore.
Sobering fact: The Blair Witch Project is a quarter of a century old in July. Terrifying. I can vividly remember the anticipation of that film, the early viral marketing, the comparisons to The Exorcist with stories of audience members fainting or leaving the cinema in paroxysms of terror.
Whatever you think of it – The Blair Witch Project is a film you either unquestionably surrender yourself over to or simply refuse to let in – there’s little doubt that Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez’s micro-budget 1999 experiment forever changed the horror genre, even if it was far from the first movie to experiment with so-called ‘found footage’.

The 37th entry in the franchise, the Japanese “Minus One” took home the trophy for Best Visual Effects. In fact, it was the first “Godzilla” film ever nominated by the academy in any category.
Talk about being overdue. The question now becomes … can “Godzilla” strike again next year?
As you’re reading this, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” continues to destroy at the box office for Warner Bros. Its domestic receipts have passed $150 million. Worldwide, its grosses are well over $430 million and counting. The sequel to 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong,” its reviews have been somewhat mixed. Many critics have compared it negatively to last year’s acclaimed “Godzilla Minus One,” which scored an impressive 98% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

And, no, to rain on your parade right away, the three words were not "Lizard fights ape," although that would have served as a fine filmmaking motto for Adam Wingard's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." Those same three words might also have been a perfectly succinct review, and there is little going on in the MonsterVerse film beyond scads of deliberately silly monster action. The premise of "Godzilla x Kong" is pretty simple: Kong has moved to the Hollow Earth to rule over the monsters that live there, while Godzilla has remained on the Earth's surface to fight any rogue monsters that have the temerity to claim ownership of the planet. Kong discovers beneath Hollow Earth -- in Hollower Earth, I suppose -- that an entire species of Kong monsters has survived, all of them enslaved by the Skar King, a lanky giant gibbon. Godzilla is called to...

After the positive box-office response Adam Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire got, the director is cooking up some more to add to the adventure for a possible sequel story. After helming the 2021 blockbuster Godzilla vs. Kong, Wingard said that he knew he would come back to the franchise for more. The New Empire, though did not fare favorably among critics, is currently the fifth-highest-grossing movie of 2024, having a $436 million worldwide collection so far.
A scene from Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire
The biggest question among fans now is who would be the scary monster that Kong goes up against in the next movie. After battling and defeating Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong, the duo goes up against Scar King in the most recent MonsterVerse movie. But with the news of a possible sequel on the horizon, fans are bound to speculate and theorize about what comes next.

The team behind the original 1999 film The Blair Witch Project didn’t know about the plan for a new movie in the horror franchise until it was announced during Lionsgate’s CinemaCon presentation last week. But the filmmakers’ frustrations over their lack of involvement in the future of the series has been building for years.
“It’s bittersweet, honestly,” Ben Rock, production designer on the 1999 found-footage hit, tells The Hollywood Reporter about the planned reboot. He notes that no one from his film, including co-directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, was involved in any significant way in the 2000 sequel, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, or the 2016 follow-up. Rock hopes this will change for the current project that is in the works from Lionsgate and Blumhouse, but so far, no one from the 1999 movie had been contacted or given a chance to pitch, he says.

The release of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire in worldwide theaters may have reminded fans of the late Lance Reddick. Although the actor did not have a huge part in the franchise, director Adam Wingard hoped to give him a more significant role and even work with him in future installments.

The famed star passed away unexpectedly in 2023, leaving his fans devastated as they won’t see him any longer in the MonsterVerse. What’s even more upsetting is the fact that he had many omitted scenes in the previous film.

In Adam Wingard's new monster mash "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," Dan Stevens' character -- the rock 'n' roll monster veterinarian named Trapper -- is introduced leaping on board a high-tech helicopter equipped with strange grappling hooks and pulleys. Trapper has been called in to sedate and perform dental surgery on Kong, who is suffering from a titanic toothache. Trapper hoots and grins as he is lowered into the unconscious Kong's mouth, eager to see what the problem is. He yanks out Kong's tooth and replaces it with an artificial implant, smiling all the while.
Trapper is like an ultra-cool version of Ace Ventura, complete with skillfully windswept hair and Hawaiian shirts. The character looks like he's just as ready to attend a days-long music festival as he is to tend to the wounds of ailing megafauna. "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" is now in theaters, and while the movie offers silly but fun Saturday morning cartoon vibes (according to Witney Seibold's review for /Film), one former MonsterVerse cast member's absence will be felt. Talented actor Lance Reddick passed away unexpectedly in 2023, and though he didn't seem to have a planned return to the franchise in the works at the time of his death, he appeared in 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong."
The MonsterVerse may not have had big plans for the future of Guillerman, the Monarch Director whom Reddick played in Legendary's first Godzilla-Kong showdown, but director Adam Wingard did initially intend for Reddick to have a larger part of that film. "Originally, Lance's part was a little bit bigger as he plays the Monarch director, he's running the organization," Wingard told GamesRadar+ around the time that "Godzilla vs. Kong" was released in theaters (per Syfy). In “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” the gorilla has a new adversary: Skar King, the cunning, lanky, red-haired orangutan-like creature, who lords over the subterranean realm of Hollow Earth like a sadistic bully to keep his ape minions in line. With Shimo, the ancient ice Titan, whom he controls as his slave, Skar King is so formidable that it takes the two titular Titans to stop him from achieving world domination.
In creating the best villain yet in the five-film MonsterVerse franchise, director Adam Wingard relied on Wētā FX — the king of ape films, with “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” right around the corner — to animate Skar King. They overhauled the design concept to ensure his biomechanics worked in line with the desired motion and also roughed him up, complete with a cat-eye reflection in one of his eyes.

Recently, Takashi Yamazaki's "Godzilla Minus One" made Academy Award history by winning the Best Visual Effects category, becoming the first film in the decade-spanning franchise to win an Oscar. An absolutely deserved win aside, it is one that feels both unexpected and a long time coming, with the future of the kaiju looking brighter than ever. One of the reasons why "Godzilla Minus One" is such an impactful entry can be chalked up to how humanity bands together to defeat a mammoth, indestructible force while also dealing with a socio-political situation that mirrors some of the bleakest moments in Japanese history. It is a film that ventures way beyond the spectacle of an incomprehensible beast stomping around without any regard for human lives, with the focus often shifting to the intricate inner lives of everyday citizens working together to achieve the impossible.

Apple is betting bigger on the Godzilla business.
The Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has been renewed for a second season.
But that’s only the beginning of the company’s monster-verse plans. Apple TV+ has also struck a new multi-series deal with Legendary Entertainment, which includes multiple spinoffs based on the franchise.
“Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has left an indelible imprint on the hearts, minds and imaginations of audiences around the world,” said Morgan Wandell, head of international development for Apple TV+. “We couldn’t be more excited for viewers to not only have the chance to experience even more thrills in season two, but to embark on epic, new journeys in the franchise, as we expand Legendary’s Monsterverse.”
The past six months have seen a surprising amount of Godzilla content. In addition to Monarch launching in November, Takashi Yamazaki’s acclaimed film Godzilla Minus One debuted in October.

Jason Blum now has his hands on The Blair Witch Project, and a big screen reboot is on the way: more here.
By this stage, we can tick the popular horror franchises off as they take their place in the reboot queue. At the time of writing, The First Omen is in cinemas. We’ve had Scream reboots, a new Salem’s Lot is (finally) on the way, and decisions are being made as to the next direction for The Exorcist. Now? Let’s add The Blair Witch Project to the pile, a series that thus far covers three films, the last of which came from Adam Wingard back in 2016.
Lionsgate and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse company have just been working together on the release of Jeff Wadlow’s Imaginary, and now they’ve inked a fresh deal to oversee a new Blair Witch film. Likely lots of new Blair Witch films.

While the studios' CinemaCon presentations are usually about the coming year's slate, there are always usually announcements of future projects. Lionsgate took the chance at its 2024 edition to announce that it is partnering with Blumhouse to develop a new take on classic 1999 found footage horror The Blair Witch Project.

It is time for fans of Bloodborne to rejoice, especially those who never even got to experience the title in the first place, as it has remained exclusive to Sony’s PlayStation ever since its release back in 2015. As luck would have it, a spinoff of the game is headed for its imminent release, and the studio can do nothing about it.
Titled Nightmare Kart, the spinoff title is scheduled to be released on 31st May and holds just enough distinction from Hidetaka Miyazaki’s title not to face any legal action. The game will also be free to play and will be made available on Steam, which is another factor why fans look forward to enjoying the title for themselves.

A decade ago, Legendary Pictures secured the rights to Godzilla and other characters owned and created by the Japanese company Toho so they could launch a cinematic universe they call the MonsterVerse – and they also secured the rights to the King Kong character so he could be part of their MonsterVerse as well. Things got started with Godzilla in 2014, and since then the universe has expanded with Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong, the animated series Skull Island, and the live-action series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Director Adam Wingard‘s Godzilla vs. Kong sequel Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is in theatres now and surpassing expectations, with its opening box office numbers being almost double what had been predicted for it. So it’s understandable that Legendary is telling The Hollywood Reporter they’re feeling good about the future of the MonsterVerse.

Another weekend, another win for "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." The latest entry in the MonsterVerse franchise dipped nearly 61% in its second weekend for a $31.2 million domestic haul. Even with the relatively heavy dip after the movie's impressive opening weekend, it was more than enough to top newcomers "Monkey Man" ($10.1 million) and "The First Omen" ($8.3 million). More importantly, it demonstrated that this franchise is arguably stronger than it's ever been a full decade into its run. Allow me to explain why that is.
Even though it has been in theaters for less than two full weeks, director Adam Wingard's "Godzilla x Kong" has now made $134.5 million domestically to date. That puts it above the total domestic grosses for both 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" ($100.9 million) and 2019's "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" ($110.5 million). It's still below 2014's "Godzilla" ($200.6 million) and 2017's "Kong: Skull Island" ($168 million), but that's only for the time being.

Adam Wingard's monster mash movie "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" is first-rate hooey, and that is meant as a compliment. It rolls with its kaiju mayhem with the sugared-up enthusiasm of a wiggly eight-year-old, inserting little thoughtfulness, emotion, or meaning into the proceedings. Many years ago, Godzilla stood as a symbol for nuclear devastation, and then later, a symbol of Japanese national pride. King Kong, meanwhile, was clearly a symbol for slavery and the perpetuation of colonialist entitlement. Wingard doesn't engage with either monster, seeing them instead as giant action figures that are real real good at knockin' s*** over. These are sentiments repeated from Wingard's glorious 2021 film "Godzilla vs. Kong," the film that cracked the code on Warner Bros. ever-growing MonsterVerse movies.

Jaws dropped at Legendary and Warner Bros. when Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire opened to $80 million in North America over Easter weekend despite getting shredded by critics. It wasn’t quite double what tracking services had predicted, but close enough. And by day 10, its global cume had hit an impressive $361.1 million as it stayed atop the chart.
So what next? “This is certainly an exciting result,” says Mary Parent, chairman of worldwide production for Josh Grode’s Legendary. Grode’s company is on an enviable winning streak, between this film and early March blockbuster Dune: Part Two. “We are in a good position to continue the journey, but let’s see how Godzilla x Kong unfolds,” Parent says. “These are early days, but we are certainly feeling good.”
Godzilla x Kong is sure to be a hot topic this week at Cinemacon, the annual gathering of cinema operators and Hollywood studios in Las Vegas.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire were the monsters with the mostest at the box office this weekend, as Dev Patel‘s much buzzed-about feature directorial debut Monkey Man and supernatural franchise installment The First Omen both opened behind expectations.
Neither genre film ever had a chance of taking away the No. 1 spot from Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Godzilla x Kong, but had hoped for a bigger slice of the proverbial box office pie. Godzilla, from filmmaker Adam Wingard, is proving to be a significant victory for Josh Grode’s Legendary Pictures on the heels of Dune: Part Two, which is the top-grossing film of the year to date with $660.7 million in global ticket sales through Sunday. And Godzilla is also a big win for Warner Bros. and Legendary’s MonsterVerse series, at a time when many franchises are struggling to remain fresh.
