Jumping into Banshee without seeing the first season is somewhat of a baptism of fire but it was something I found myself doing so I could do my Banshee: The Complete Second Season review. Watching the recap that comes on the first disc though I was able to catch up with the main plot and have an idea of what’s happened so far and by the final episode I may just have found one of my new favourite shows (to add to an ever-growing list).
With Lucas (Antony Starr) having survived the confrontation with Rabbit (Ben Cross) all of Banshee have to deal with the fallout, especially Carrie (Ivana Milicevic) who finds her past revealed and jail time on the cards. With Rabbit’s body...

2014 has been yet another fantastic year for television, one that continued the nichification of the medium, with highly specific and underrepresented voices breaking through in every genre. There was a comedy explosion, particularly on cable, with dozens of new series presenting confident first seasons and several returning shows reaching new heights. The dramas didn’t disappoint either, with visionary creators bringing new life to familiar settings and taking greater risks with their returning series, deepening their worlds. Throughout the year, directors and cinematographers brought lush visuals, composers pushed the auditory envelope, and an astonishing number of actors gave fantastic, memorable performances. More than a few shows delivered spectacle on a weekly basis, while others went small, deriving incredible power out of stillness and self-reflection. Some series swept the audience up, week in and week out, and others built subtly, only showing their hand in their season’s final episodes. There...

Sean Colletti: Second seasons are notoriously difficult to pull off. We saw the collapse of Homeland after putting together an exciting debut season, and it’s certainly not alone in recent promising shows that have struggled to improve upon themselves—or even just prevent themselves from declining. Two shows, though, have really stood out to me this year in terms of upping their games in their second seasons. Both Arrow (The CW) and Banshee (Cinemax) have come from relatively meager beginnings to grow into two of the most entertaining and rewarding TV experiences for me at the moment.
And I think it’s specifically that idea of coming from those beginnings that impresses me. Shows like Hannibal and The Americans came out swinging and brimming with confidence, so the differences between their first seasons and what we’ve seen from their second seasons so...

Opening remarks
It’s not even February and, already, 2014 is shaping up to be a massive year for television. True Detective announced itself as the year’s first new stand-out series. Against all odds, Dan Harmon and Community returned and are putting together a respectable comeback season. FX’s fantastic and hard-working Justified continues to solidify its place among the greats of the past decade. And Girls‘ unique blend of comedy and drama is once again pushing the narrative boundaries of the half-hour series in its third season.
One series, though, is leading the charge at the beginning of the year. The most unlikely of heroes, Cinemax’s Banshee, in just a matter of three weeks, has matured into something truly special – something a lot of TV writers refer to as “appointment viewing” when describing other series. With limited experience dabbling in co-produced original programming, Cinemax released Banshee – its first...

James checks out the first impressive season of HBO's Banshee on Blu Ray, a crazy ride he can't recommend enough...
Some new TV shows arrive on a wave of hype. Earlier this year, The Following debuted amid a furore of coming from the writer of Scream and starring, erm, Kevin Bacon. In a few weeks, Joss Whedon’s Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will premiere – a new show where even seconds worth of footage merit a news story. Then there are those shows which creep in, near unnoticed but as word of mouth begins to spread about just how special they are, viewership begins to grow.
This is the position that True Blood producer Alan Ball’s new show Banshee now finds itself in as its first season arrives on home release. Here in the UK, Banshee went out on a Monday night, following Game of Thrones...

James explores the extra online material that accompanies season one of Banshee, in his opinion, the best new Us show on TV...
When you see Alan Ball’s name next to the credit of executive producer, you can assume that a show isn’t going to be one for the all the family. Having steered cult hits like Six Feet Under and True Blood, Ball’s shows are usually stacked with characters that inhabit greyer areas of life, hold one or two secrets, and lashings of adult content. His latest, Banshee, is no exception.
Over the course of a ten episode first season, Banshee welcomed its audience into a murky, but enthralling world. An unnamed ex-con played by Anthony Starr, tracks his sweetheart of fifteen years ago, Ivana Milicevic’s Ana/Carrie Hopewell, to a small Pennsylvanian Amish community where he finds she’s...

1.7 Behold a Pale Rider
Towards the end of my review of last week’s episode of Banshee, I wondered if Ana really would turn Lucas Hood over to her father Mr. Rabbit, or if her affections for him would weigh too heavily upon her. As it turned out, episode seven left no time for such pondering, and after an instalment which felt a little thin, Banshee returned to its plot-stuffed lightning pace once more.
On reflection, even knowing the little we do about him, it would have been foolish to assume that Mr. Rabbit would want to wait a second longer to get his hands on Hood for what he sees as the stealing away of his daughter. As he...

On the surface it seemed like The Kindred was going to be Banshee’s first filler episode – a biker gang, The Kindred, descend on the town like a bunch of Harley-driving locusts and chaos ensues – but scratch beneath the surface and once again, there was an awful lot going on here, least of all the chance for Trieste Kelly Dunn’s Deputy Siobhan Kelly to come properly into the light for the first time.

After spending three weeks setting up its central conflict between new sheriff, but not really a sheriff, Lucas Hood and small town Mr big Kai Proctor, Banshee takes a change of outlook for episode four with an instalment focusing on Ivana Milicevic’s Ana/Carrie Hopewell. There’s still the usual mix of blood, bruises and boning but this is a real journey episode for the Ana character. Though maybe not as far as she would have hoped.
Before we get to that, there’s the welcome return of Hoon Lee’s Job - still Lucas Hood’s go to guy when he’s in a jam. That jam happens to be finding himself locked in...

If episode two of Banshee could have been sub-titled ‘Kai Proctor Strikes Back’, then its third could easily follow with ‘Return of Lucas Hood’. This was the episode that felt like it brought Banshee’s opening act to a close, dealt out with bloody vengeance from Anthony Starr’s rogue Sheriff.
First though, it was dishing out plot twists before we’d even got to those impressive opening credits. A note on this title sequence is that the snapshots that make it up are now even easier to appreciate as we get to know Banshee’s range of characters. They relate to certain things about them. Price: DVD $39.98, Blu-ray $49.99

Six Feet Under creator Alan Ball produces the Cinemax TV show Banshee, which was created by first-timers David Schickler and Jonathan Tropper.
The crime series stars Anthony Starr (TV’s Lowdown) as Lucas Hood, an ex-con and master thief who assumes the identity of the murdered sheriff of Banshee, a rural, Amish-area town.
He’s also looking for Carrie Hopewell (Ivana Milicevic, What’s Your Number?), who he last saw 15 years ago when he gave himself up to police after a jewelry heist to save her. Living under an assumed name now, Carrie is married to the local Da with two children, and desperately trying to keep her past a secret.
Complicating matters is Banshee’s corruption, with an Amish overlord (Ulrich Thomsen, The Thing), who’s building an empire of drugs and gambling.
