The UK Jewish Film Festival (November 6 – 21) has revealed its 2019 lineup, including galas for Taika Waititi’s Nazi satire JoJo Rabbit and Diane Kruger thriller The Operative.
Toronto Audience Award winner JoJo Rabbit, about a young boy in Hitler’s army who finds out his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home, will be the festival’s closing night gala, a choice that could stir debate. Waititi, who is Jewish, plays Hitler. Also starring are Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell and Rebel Wilson.
The festival’s Centerpiece Gala will be the UK premiere of The Operative, about a woman who is recruited by the Mossad to work undercover in Tehran. Directed by Yuval Adler, the Berlin Film Festival debut stars Diane Kruger and Martin Freeman.
Films in competition for the Dorfman Best Film Award are Dolce Fine Giornata, Flawless, Jojo Rabbit, festival opener My Polish Honeymoon, Stripped and The Unorthodox.

The Golden Globes and the BAFTAs have already dropped the ball this year when it comes to honoring women filmmakers with a Best Director nomination, and now all eyes are turning towards the Academy to see whether or not the Oscars will shut out women in the same category. With awards contenders such as “Mudbound,” “Lady Bird,” and “Wonder Woman” in the running, many are expecting at least one female director to land a nomination. Gerwig seems like the strongest bet at this point, having already won directing accolades from the National Board of Review and more this season.

LONDON -- Welsh independent producer Tinopolis said Thursday it has received support for its takeover bid of Television Corp. from more than 50% of the U.K. indie's shareholders, despite failing to persuade TVC's board of the merits of the deal. Outlining details of the all-share offer, which values TVC at £36.4 million ($63.6 million), Tinopolis chairman Ron Jones said it will offer 1.73 new Tinopolis shares for each TV Corp. share. The offer represents a 40% premium to the last closing price since bid talks were announced last month (HR 10/14). If the deal goes ahead it is likely to see the departure of TVC chairman Tom Chandos and chief executive Peter Salmon. A new production venture, headed by former BBC head of entertainment Jane Lush, is also in doubt.
