Russell (Aj Bowen) is a good guy. We know because his joint rideshare driver helps a customer by carrying her giant wreath to the door before refusing a tip with a genuine “Merry Christmas.” You kind of have to be if you’re working a thankless job on the biggest holiday of the year so you won’t go insane before igniting a killing spree. “Good” doesn’t equal “saint,” however. He’s not going to pass up a couple hundred dollars when the next fare (Sophie Dalah’s Charlotte) asks him to wait for her without wanting to waste time putting in a second destination. And he’s not above massaging a couple hundred more out by saying he’ll have to cancel plans to comply. So don’t believe he’s innocent of what transpires next.
Complicity is one thing, but active participation is different. Russell watches Charlotte...

In Night Drive, a comedy of errors unfolds after a ride-share app driver (Aj Bowen) picks up an intriguing young woman (Sophie Dalah) and quickly realizes that his passenger is about to keep him on his toes in some very unexpected ways. Night Drive recently celebrated its world premiere at Fantastic Fest 2019, and Daily Dead sat down with both of the film’s directors, Meghan Leon and Brad Baruh, as well as the cast – Bowen, Dalah and Scott Poythress – to hear about their experiences collaborating on Night Drive, how their tight-knit group came together throughout production on the darkly comedic holiday romp (yay for more Christmas-centric movies!), and more!
If we could start with you, Meghan and Brad, and talk about the story. It’s very ambitious, but it’s all condensed within this one night, so were there any unique challenges for you, in terms of hitting those narrative high points?...

I have mentioned many many times that I absolutely love Christmas movies. And I mean any type of movie that has that great Christmas feeling – romantic comedy? Aslong as it’s set at Christmas, I’ll probably like it! So when horror and Christmas collide I am always first in line to watch it.
That said, I Trapped The Devil doesn’t exactly have a ‘Christmas spirit’ but it is set at Christmas, and the season does play a part in the movie. This actually had a bit of a Krampus feel to it at times (only with zero comedy). The ‘unhappy family Christmas but stuck with each other for now’ setting felt familiar. Perhaps strangely, the Christmas lights were something that stuck out while watching the movie. They add this brightly coloured...

“I Trapped the Devil” sounds like the title of a sermon or gospel song, but it’s a very literal-minded statement coming from the mouth of a leading character in writer-director Josh Lobo’s debut feature. This being a horror film, there’s a chance he’s even literally correct, rather than simply mad. A mixed-bag frightfest, IFC’s limited theatrical release doesn’t ultimately provide quite enough reward for a slow buildup. But it proves Lobo an able helmer (if one who could probably use a co-writer next time), eking decent atmospherics and good performances within a potentially claustrophobic premise.
In a framing device, two policemen break into a seemingly empty house where something is intangibly amiss. As they’re just about to find out what that is, the film jumps back several hours earlier, when others are arriving at the same house. Matt (Aj Bowen) and wife Karen...

Slow burn horror/thrillers require some very specific tools to proceed. Especially when the title is an independent one with limited money and time at its disposal, it’s easier thought of than executed. In the case of this week’s new release I Trapped the Devil, as novel concept ends up ever so slightly underwhelming. Something like this probably needed some stronger acting to keep you invested as the tension builds. Admittedly, the ending is solid, but not quite solid enough to make up for 70 or so minutes that’s come before it. This is far from a bad work, though I can’t bring myself to give it a full on recommendation. The movie is a mix of horror and thriller, told with a vast amount of patience. Set during Christmas, this is a look at a family reunion of sorts gone very wrong. When Matt (Aj Bowen...

Tragedy struck some time ago and we honestly don’t need to know the details to understand how it’s affected the three characters we’re about to meet. Steve (Scott Poythress) is the one who’s hurting from it and has been ever since. Maybe his brother Matt (Aj Bowen) thought space was needed for him to heal or maybe he was just too unsure about what he could do to help alleviate his pain and/or scared about what doing so entailed, but it’s been awhile since they’ve last seen each other. This is why Matt’s wife Karen (Susan Burke) has dragged him out during Christmas to make certain her brother-in-law wouldn’t be alone. With Steve proving less surprised than inconvenienced upon their impromptu arrival, the gesture might be too late.

I Trapped the Devil is a film that dares to ask some really complicated questions about the nature of evil. It ruminates on them and uses the lack of a concise answer to enhance the uncertainty of its atmosphere and to create a mood that is deeply unsettling.
Matt (Aj Bowen) and Karen (Susan Burke) decide to visit Matt’s estranged brother Steve (Scott Poythress) for Christmas. Their relationship is rocky, but Karen wants the couple to make the effort to reach out and bridge the gap. When they arrive, they notice immediately that Steve is acting strangely. At first, he seems overly nervous and jumpy, but as we spend more time with him, we begin to see the depth of his paranoia. Something is definitely not right. They soon learn what. Locked in Steve's basement is a man that Steve claims is the Devil himself. Has Steve lost his mind completely,...

"There is something evil locked behind that door!"
I’ve got a trailer here for you to watch for a new Christmas-set horror movie called I Trapped The Devil. The story revolves around a man who descends into paranoia and madness after trapping what he believes to be the devil in his basement. Things end up taking a very dark, twisted turn when his estranged brother unexpectedly shows up for the holiday.
The movie actually looks like it could be pretty good and worth checking out. In the trailer, the movie is compared to The Twilight Zone. Here’s the synopsis:

You expect surprises under the tree around the holidays, but you don't expect the surprise of a man being held against his will in your brother's basement... because he thinks he's Satan. That's the hellish holiday scenario that Matt and his wife, Karen (Susan Burke), walk into in the new horror film I Trapped the Devil, and you can get an idea of what to expect in the official trailer from IFC Midnight.
Written and directed by Josh Lobo, I Trapped the Devil stars Aj Bowen, Jocelin Donahue, Scott Poythress, Susan Burke, Chris Sullivan, Rowan Russell, and Josh Marrott. IFC Midnight will release the film in theaters and VOD on April 26th.

"There is something evil locked behind that door!" IFC Midnight has debuted an official trailer for the indie horror thriller I Trapped the Devil, an intriguing horror mystery set during the Holidays. Here's what it's about: a man descends into paranoia after trapping what he believes to be the devil in his basement, but things take a dark turn when his family (his estranged brother) unexpectedly arrive for the holidays. Is it really Satan? What is truly going on here? "Either way, the stage is set for a true Christmas from hell." This crafty horror stars Aj Bowen, Jocelin Donahue, Scott Poythress, Susan Burke, Chris Sullivan, Rowan Russell, and Josh Marrott. This looks cool. Brad Miska of Bloody Disgusting makes a Twilight Zone reference in the quote (on the poster), which makes me even more intrigued. I need to check this out. Written and directed by Jacob Gentry, Synchronicity is an ambitious neo-noir time travel yarn that feels like a companion piece to Gentry’s first sci-fi feature, The Signal (which he co-directed with David Bruckner and Dan Bush). Both deal with fractured timelines to a degree, but it's his latter that proves Gentry’s keen ability to manipulate popular tropes all while creating a complex and intricate story. The film takes a bit of time to find its footing, but when it does, that’s when Synchronicity evolves into something rather special. On par with films like Timecrimes, Predestination or even Primer to a degree, Synchronicity once again proves that you don’t need a huge budget to create a compelling cinematic experience.
Synchronicity follows a beleaguered scientist by the name of Jim Beale (Chad McKnight) who, along with team members Chuck (Aj Bowen) and Matty (Scott Poythress), have invented a...

Not many filmmakers can turn heads with a single release, but Jacob Gentry earned his must-watch potential after striking gold with 2007’s The Signal (a shared effort with David Bruckner and Dan Bush). All eyes were on what Gentry would do next, which ended up being a three-part slasher franchise on MTV known as My Super Psycho Sweet 16 – which, admittedly, weren’t the worst. But his televised splatterfests didn’t showcase Gentry’s full potential, which makes Synchronicity all that much sweeter a return for the ambitious indie auteur. Once again Gentry explodes with genre vibrancy (Sci-fi this time), as we’re transported to a metallic future that’s molded into an engrossing cinematic universe. Gentry does more than make movies, he builds entire worlds. It’s immersion in the fullest form.

Arriving in theaters and on VOD platforms everywhere this weekend is Jacob Gentry’s Synchronicity, which reunites the director with Chad McKnight, Aj Bowen and Scott Poythress—three co-stars from his first genre effort, The Signal. This time around, McKnight stars as a scientist who has invented a machine that can create a wormhole, and both Bowen and Poythress play his wisecracking labmates who help the film’s hero put all of the intricate pieces of Synchronicity’s puzzle into place.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to catch up with Gentry, Bowen, McKnight and Poythress at the press day for Synchronicity and discussed with them their experiences reuniting for another cinematic adventure and so much more.
I think it's really ambitious when you can make a movie like Synchronicity because when you think sci-fi, a lot of folks automatically think “big concepts that usually require a big budget.” And this movie,...

The phrase "Curiosity killed the cat" exists for a reason and Charlotte might just have to learn that lesson the hard way in Five Nights at Freddy's: The Silver Eyes. Also in this round-up: a trailer for the film Synchronicity as well as development details on Mab Studios' Witchula.
Five Nights at Freddy's: The Silver Eyes: From Amazon: "Based on the bestselling horror video game series, Five Nights at Freddy’s.
It’s been exactly ten years since the murders at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, and Charlotte (Charlie for short) has spent those ten years trying to forget. Her father was the owner of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and the creator of its four adult-sized animatronic animals, and now Charlie is returning to her hometown to reunite with her childhood friends on the anniversary of the tragedy that ripped their town apart.

We thought time travel was impossible - we were wrong. Magnolia has debuted the official trailer for The Signal director Jacob Gentry's new film Synchronicity, a time travel sci-fi noir that will definitely grab the attention of sci-fi fans. This trailer makes the film look a bit like Looper, Dark City and Blade Runner all thrown in one, with very unique visuals and some odd changeovers in this trailer that you might not be expecting. The cast includes Michael Ironside as the investor, along with Chad McKnight, Brianne Davis, Aj Bowen and Scott Poythress. I'm very curious to check this out, as I enjoyed The Signal and I'm hoping this is as special as it seems it might be. Is that a brain running the time travel device? Or what? Here's the first trailer for Jacob Gentry's Synchronicity, direct from YouTube (via SlashFilm): Jacob Gentry's Synchronicity...

On March 13th the party is over for director Jacob Gentry - or rather the My Super Psycho Sweet 16 party is over with the release of Part 3 - the final installment in his modern send-up of the slasher genre series.
Dread Central recently caught up with Gentry to discuss ending the My Super Psycho Sweet 16 franchise, what fans can expect from Part Three and how he's reuniting with some of his fellow The Signal alumni for future projects.
Dread Central: How does it feel looking back on where the My Super Psycho Sweet 16 story was in the first film and how everything has culminated up until Part Three?
Jacob Gentry: When I started working on the first one, I always envisioned that fans would see the My Super Psycho Sweet 16 movies kind of like John Hughes meets John Carpenter. Sure, they're slasher movie send-ups, but...

So, Dread's two-year anniversary got me to thinking ...
We run so many news stories on any given day that often some really interesting tidbits get pushed off the home page and lost in the shuffle. To help remedy that, I thought I'd start doing a recap at the end of every week that you can peruse at your leisure to see what you might have missed during the previous seven days. The Weekly Wrap-Up will be a work in progress for a while so comments, feedback, etc., are much appreciated.
From July 5-11, these are a few of the highlights:
Repo! finally got a release date (November 7th for those too lazy to click) and a major update to its official site. Read more here!
DC posted an exclusive -- and totally badass -- commentary for The Signal courtesy of Lewis (Aj Bowen) and Clark (Scott Poythress) that you won't find anywhere but here!

So The Signal (DVD review) has been out on DVD for a while now, and if you’re like any other fan of the film, I’m sure you’ve already plowed through all the extras on the disc to make sure you have the full picture of what it was like to make this groundbreaking indie masterpiece.
But there’s one side of the story you don’t know, the Lewis & Clark side. Sure it’s great that the directors all get their own commentary, and the way they set it up on the DVD was pretty brilliant, but wouldn’t it be more interesting to know what it was like to work with these guys? To be tied to a chair (beard and all) for hours on end? To be the guy with some of the best lines in the movie?
Well, wonder no longer because Dread Central...
