Shields up! This article contains major spoilers for the season 5 premiere of "Star Trek: Discovery."
Who knew that "Star Trek: Discovery" would be saving its biggest reveal for last? After being responsible for kickstarting the new era of "Trek" on streaming, the fifth and final season is signaling the beginning of the end for the flagship series. But as fans would expect, the opening episode proves the writing team has no intentions of taking its final bow without crafting one last adventure worthy of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), Mr. Saru (Doug Jones), and the rest of the Discovery crew. So perhaps it was inevitable that the biggest twist of the young season would have its roots in one of the most game-changing hours of "Trek" lore ever.
Trekkies will no doubt remember the classic "Next Generation" episode "The Chase," which first introduced the extinct race known as the Progenitors.

“Between season 1 and season 5 is an entire life.” That’s a real understatement on the part of Sonequa Martin-Green in an interview with Den of Geek magazine, describing the five-season and seven-year journey of her character Michael Burnham, the protagonist of Star Trek: Discovery.
When we first met Burnham way back in 2017, she was the first officer on the USS Shenzhou, a Starfleet ship operating about a decade before the events of The Original Series, and under the command of Captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh). By the end of the two-part premiere, Georgiou was dead and Burnham was in prison for mutiny.
Things have certainly changed since then. We begin Discovery‘s fifth and final season with Captain Michael Burnham of the USS Discovery, but adventuring over 900 years after the events of the premiere. Yeah, it’s been a wild journey, one that incurred more than a little criticism early...

When producer Alex Kurtzman launched Star Trek: Discovery nearly a decade ago, the idea of bringing the Star Trek franchise back to TV was a gamble. Back in 2015, the most popular science fiction TV series were either on the SyFy Channel or Doctor Who. After having gone out with a whimper with Enterprise in 2005, could Trek rematerialize as a fully rejuvenated version of itself? Could a mainstream audience be enticed back to the final frontier by yet another new crew? At first, the answer was maybe.
After several delays, Star Trek: Discovery debuted in 2017 on a newly minted streaming service, CBS All-Access, and the reviews were mixed. After the departure of Bryan Fuller, some critics felt Disco’s first season had a patchwork quality, amounting to a Trek tapestry that was as challenging as it was audacious. A new face has joined the ensemble for the final season of "Star Trek: Discovery," along with a seemingly familiar set of pointy ears. A character named Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) is poised to board "Star Trek: Discovery" for the show's last voyage on Paramount+, and at first blush, this new player appears to be a Vulcan or similar alien species. A TrekMovie interview with series co-showrunner Michelle Paradise, however, has revealed that Rayner isn't Vulcan or Romulan after all: he's actually part of a lesser-known "Star Trek" species called the Kelleruns.
"He's a Kellerun," Paradise told the outlet after also reportedly confirming the character's background to SFX Magazine. "We were looking for a species that not a lot had been done with them. We definitely wanted another non-human on the ship and taking care of things." Currently, Doug Jones' Kelpien executive officer Saru is the most obviously alien member of the Discovery crew,...

It is said that political power often grows out of the barrel of a gun. The story in this Max Isaacson movie is about the small eponymous town of Paradise, where everyone knows everyone else’s business. But the real drama unfolds between a sheriff father and his rebellious daughter, Ella. Ella got this reputation as the quickest gun in town. But her old man, being the sheriff, isn’t exactly thrilled about her carrying guns everywhere. Anyway, just when you think things couldn’t get any worse, tragedy strikes. The sheriff, Ella’s own father, gets gunned down. The question arises: who is responsible? Could it be the same gang led by Lee Page, who previously took the lives of Ella’s mother and brother? Or perhaps there is another conspiracy going around? As we delve into the heart of Paradise, we seek to uncover the truth – Is this...

When asked about the long journey to Star Trek: Discovery‘s fifth and final season, producer Alex Kurtzman is honest but optimistic. “It’s been an incredible ride for us,” Kurtzman tells Den of Geek when we chat with him at SXSW 2024. “And yeah, it was an incredibly bumpy first year.”
Kurtzman’s referring to the behind-the-scenes difficulties that plagued the show’s first two seasons. Initially developed by Bryan Fuller, who wrote for Deep Space Nine and Voyager before going on to make fan-favorite shows such as Hannibal and American Gods, Discovery ultimately premiered with Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts as showrunners. By the end of season two, both had left the show, with Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise stepping in as showrunners to right the ship.

The fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Discovery" debuts on April 4, 2024, and it is a time of ambivalence. "Discovery" has struggled throughout its tenure, unsure as to what its identity should be, or what its general vibe is. Other "Star Trek" shows always featured staunch, stone-faced diplomats in ultra-professional workplace environments. The "Discovery" characters, in contrast, are teens at a slumber party, if the teens were over-dramatic theater kids and the slumber party was held after they all lost the one-act-play competition. The crew of the U.S.S. Discovery openly discuss their feelings at all times and perpetually need shoulders to cry on. The professionalism of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" is long behind us.
But then, that seems to be what the show's fans like most about it. Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) encourages both emotional vulnerability and her crew to approach one another with open hearts.

When showrunner Michelle Paradise and co-creator Alex Kurtzman sat down to begin planning what would ultimately become the final season of “Star Trek: Discovery” they had one big goal: “Bigger and bolder,” of course, Paradise said.
They didn’t originally know the program would be coming to an end, but they still wanted to take some big swings when it came to keeping the story fresh for Season 5 — and that means compelling villains.
“They’re kind of like the Bonnie and Clyde of the ‘Star Trek’ universe,” Kurtzman said to IndieWire about the new baddies that fans will meet in the premiere episode. “But like all great villains, they have a sympathetic story. You know the old adage: The villain is the hero of their own story. That’s very true for them, and I think ultimately you’ll love them as much as you’ll see them as the villain.

Quick, who’s the most important person in Star Trek? Jim Kirk? Jean-Luc Picard? Morn?
No, no, and maybe, but not who we had in mind. The most important person in Star Trek is the character who has appeared in every series, except The Original Series: William T. Riker, the character immortalized by Jonathan Frakes.
Of course, Frakes played Commander Riker for seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation. His twin/clone/variant Thomas Riker showed up as a Maquis agent on Deep Space Nine, while Q shenanigans brought Will to the Delta Quadrant on Voyager. No one, not even Frakes, likes Riker’s appearance with Troi in the finale of Enterprise. But everyone loved Riker and Troi’s vocal appearances on Lower Decks. And, yes, it takes some fudging, but Star Trek: Very Short Treks allowed Riker to blast his trombone with the Star Trek: The Animated Series crew,...

Alex Kurtzman looks exactly how you’d expect someone to look at the end of a five-year-mission for Starfleet: relaxed, confident, and ready to bring the ship home. At least, that’s the impression he gives when he, showrunner Michelle Paradise, and stars Sonequa Martin-Green and David Ajala talk with Den of Geek about the upcoming fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery during SXSW 2024. You almost can’t tell this show has faced many trials and tribulations across its seven years on the air.
“It’s been an incredible ride for us,” Kurtzman declares during our chat, but quickly adds, “It was an incredibly bumpy first year.” Only a calm man can use words like “incredibly bumpy” to describe Discovery‘s inaugural season in 2017, the first new Star Trek television series since Enterprise went off the air in 2005. Country musician Patrick Haggerty has died aged 78, after suffering a stroke earlier this year.
The singer and guitarist was best known as the frontman of Lavender Country, a group whose 1973 self-titled debut album is widely regarded to be “the first openly gay country record ever released”.
His death was confirmed by record label Paradise of Bachelors, who reissued the band’s debut album in 2014.
“We are heartbroken to confirm that Patrick Haggerty, the visionary songwriter, dauntless activist, and irrepressible raconteur of Lavender Country, passed away at home early this morning, surrounded by family and friends,” they wrote on Tuesday (1 November).
“Patrick was never at a loss for stories or words, but for me, two words – his extraordinary father’s moral imperative – sum up much of what he stood for: ‘Don’t sneak.’ Thank you, Patrick, for kicking down the door and changing everything.”

The supersized new season of “Bachelor in Paradise” is going to bring the drama. At the conclusion of Tuesday’s season 8 premiere of the series, fans got a look at what’s to come, and, boy, is there lots to come.
The preview starts out on a light-hearted note as Shanae blacks out from abs and juggles men, Aaron falls in love after witnessing a twerk, and Johnny jokes about the season’s love triangles making up “geometry beach.”
Love is in the air too, as Brandon tells Serene he’s “falling for you hard,” Rodney and Lace couple up, Brittany and Jacob get close, Michael tells Sierra that she’s bringing him “back to life,” and Logan confesses to Kate that he wants her “to be mine.”
It can’t be all good, though, as Aaron tells Genevieve he’s being “chipped away at,” Shanae yells at Logan to “be a man,...
