British director Julian Gilbey, best known for his 2007 film Rise of the Footsolider, finally sees his directorial debut, Reckoning Day, released on DVD next week. An ultra-violent action movie made on a shoestring budget, Reckoning Day was completed in 2002 – so it’s been a long time coming. As a film it is certainly flawed: bearing the hallmarks of a director who, by his own admission, was looking to experiment and find his way, and featuring a cast of willing but limited novice actors. The script is often suspect and the progression of events sometimes nonsensical but, as Julian explains, mitigating factors there most certainly were. Amicable, well-spoken, and forthcoming, he discusses Reckoning Day itself, the difficulties facing low-budget movie production, and what the future holds… First things first - why the 7 year wait for Reckoning Day on DVD? I'm of the mind that Franka Potente needs to get some mainstream work that stretches beyond the confines of sexy girl for Matt Damon or Johnny Depp. Usually, that would lead me to grumble over another indie thriller she was involving herself with, but this time, it might be worth it. Twitch reports that Julian Gilbey, the man behind Rise of the Footsoldier and Rollin' with the Nines, is gearing up for a pretty cool cliffside thriller, and Potente will star. On the official website, the outlined story details a couple taking a trip into the Rocky Mountains, and how Franka flees into the woods when a hunting party kills her man in a drug-induced panic, and how said party tries to chase her down to keep their hides safe. »

Some very intriguing news here for fans of Run Lola Run star Franka Potente. Carnaby International - the same outfit who are backing Jake West’s Doghouse - have just announced Julian Gilbey’s upcoming thriller The Long Weekend with Potente in the lead. And the concept behind this, frankly, is pretty stellar ... well, the concepts are. Why plural? Because the synopsis on the official website and the synopsis included in the concept reel that Carnaby has released are wildly different with one (the one listed on the site) revolving around an accidental death and the panicked suriviors rushing to kill the only witness (Potente) while the other revolves around some weekend hikers who discover a young girl - the daughter of a notorious crime lord - buried alive in an underground bunker after being kidnapped. I’d prefer door number two, I think, and it looks as though that »
