Paris-based MPM Premium has snagged the international sales rights to French-Colombian documentary “Transfariana” ahead of its world premiere in the Berlinale’s Panorama section.
The documentary, by French director-cinematographer Joris Lachaise, explores the unusual collaboration between the since-disbanded Colombian guerrilla group Farc and the trans activist movement in Colombia that led to changes in local laws.
A TV version running 1.5 hours was acquired by European culture TV channel, Arte.
In a trailer bowing exclusively in Variety, it opens with Jaison Murillo introducing himself as a political prisoner and Farc guerrilla member. He relates how Trans Laura was transferred to his prison compound where they met and formed a relationship. He’s expelled by his group but it fires him up even more to fight for change. With the historic peace pact between the government and Farc paving the way for change, both marginalized communities find common ground in their struggle for their rights.

Fernando Díaz’s Machaco Films and Roxana Ramos’ Aramos Cine have partnered to set up a joint venture: La Puerta Roja, focused on horror and fantasy movies as well as working with prominent genre directors from Ibero-America. Both companies are based in Buenos Aires.
The idea sprang from Machaco and Aramos’s co-production partnership on Demian Rugna’s next project “When Evil Lurks.” Machaco had already produced Rugna’s “Terrified,” awarded at the Austin Fantastic Fest among a flurry of international kudos, and whose remake rights were acquired by Guillermo del Toro.
A cinema-tv production company, Machaco Films was founded over 20 years ago. Productions include Fernando Díaz’s “Soul’s Square,” and Rossana Díaz Costa’s “Trip to Timbuktu” and “A World for Julius,” based on Alfredo Bryce Echenique’s same-titled novel.
As for Aramos, it has raised international expectations with Alexi Tolstoy’s short story adaptation of “Vurdalak Blood,...

Written and directed by popular Argentine genre filmmaker Santiago Fernandez Calvete, “Vurdalak Blood,” based on Alexi Tolstoy’s short story “The Family of the Vourdalak,” is screening in works in progress version at this year’s Ventana Sur Blood Window genre sidebar.
“Vurdalak Blood” takes place in the uncertain hours after a vampire hunt when it’s unclear if the hunter has himself been turned into a creature of the night. Will his family find out in time, or will their sentiment make them easy prey for the novice nightwalker? Natalia, his teenage daughter, ends up proving that her father has become a vampire just when her brother is abandoning her to her fate and the night threatens to arrive.
Fernandez’s film is produced by Aramos Cine, headed by Roxana Ramos and co-produced with Córdoba-based Jaque Content. As a project it received two production awards, one from Incaa and...
