The werewolf, loup-garou, and the Lycanthrope are back in the brilliant thought-provoking film Wolfkin . Coming from the rich tradition of fiction such as Guy Endore’s 1933 seminal novel The Werewolf of Paris and the 1896 story The Were-wolf by Clemence Housman, this film is in my opinion an essential new addition to the werewolf film canon.
You can lump this film into the abyss of Folk Horror yet its just plain simple a damn good film from top to end credits because it tells an essential human story. Wolfkin (2022) a.k.a. Kommunioun is a Luxembourgian/French/Belgium production; directed by Jacques Molitor. The picture is elegantly shot and paced with true mastery and restraint, as does befit the subject matter of extreme, old-world control and remedy for the modern, uncontrolled animalistic urges.
Taking a cue from Hammer’s The Curse of the Werewolf (1961), Wolfkin (2022) reverses the fact that in that film,...

"I finished my work. I'll be taking care of you." Dark Star Pictures has revealed the official US trailer for Megalomaniac, a brutal, gory, hyper violent horror film from Belgium. Written & directed by filmmaker Karim Ouelhaj, this originally premiered at the 2022 Fantasia Film Festival last year - where it won the Jury Prize for Best Feature Film. This violent and dark serial killer film utilizes the backdrop of an unsolved true crime. Martha and Félix are the children of the Butcher of Mons, a notorious Belgian serial killer from the 1990s. Her brother decides to carry on their father's legacy, and after an incident of harassment at work, she begins to fall into the same tendencies, too. Megalomaniac questions the invisible line between victim and executioner and how it is crossed. A film about the weight of patriarchy and the illusion of Manichaeism. Starring Eline Schumacher, Wim Willaert, Benjamin Ramon,...

Between January 1996 and July 1997, a serial killer stalked a city in western Belgium, murdering and dismembering at least five women. Although numerous leads were investigated, he was never caught. Karim Ouelhaj’s disturbing film, perhaps the darkest contribution to 2022’s Fantasia International Film Festival, speculates not on his identity per se but on what, after his death, might have happened to his children.
Félix (Benjamin Ramon) and Martha (Eline Schumacher) live together in a large, sprawling house which has seen better days. Félix is the dominant one of the pair, quick to raise his voice or shoot his sister an aggressive glance if she steps out of line, but there is relatively little confict between them as they each know the boundaries of their roles. She works as a cleaner, obtaining money for food and bills, taking care of practical matters, and never going into his room or ‘the...

Karim Ouelhaj’s fourth feature ‘Megalomaniac’ – about to world premiere at Fantasia – has been sold to South Korea’s Youngjin Creative, Japan’s Sts Ent and Latin America’s Encripta, with Indeed Film handling German-speaking territories.
Media Move handles world sales with XYZ in charge of North America.
Ouelhaj is also about to wrap principal photography on his new feature “Le Pont des Fiévreux.” Described by producer Florence Saâdi as a “fantastic thriller tinged with horror,” it follows the journey of antihero Scola, lost between madness and purgatory. The film’s structure is inspired by 1990 release “Jacob’s Ladder.”
“It’s the craziest movie I have ever made,” teased the Belgian helmer, who also descends into madness in “Megalomaniac,” produced by Okayss and Les Films du Carré. It was inspired by the terrifying true story of the “Butcher of Mons” who murdered five women between 1996 and 1997. He was never apprehended.
