ReFrame, the coalition formed by Women in Film, the Sundance Institute and IMDbPro, has designated a total of 20 films among 2018’s 100 highest-grossing titles to receive the ReFrame Stamp, which recognize standout, gender-balanced films.
The list released Wednesday includes Fox Searchlight’s Oscar Best Picture-nominated The Favourite, Paramount’s Transformers pic Bumblebee, Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time, Stx’s I Feel Pretty and Lionsgate’s The Spy Who Dumped Me. Nine additional films outside the top 100 were awarded stamps after applying (see the full lists below).
The stamp, launched last June, awarded 12 film stamps in 2017. But the group’s 2018 study found continued disparities in female representation and women of color, with just 4% of the top 100 films directed by a female (down from 6% a year ago), and 23% written by a female. A total of 37% featured female leads, with only 9% being women of color.

The ReFrame coalition of industry leaders and IMDBPro have unveiled 20 movies certified as gender-balanced productions among the top 100 box office films released in 2018.
The list includes Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” Paramount Pictures’ “Bumblebee,” Fox Searchlight Pictures’ “The Favourite,” Stx’s “I Feel Pretty,” Lionsgate’s “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” Fox’s “The Hate U Give,” and Warner Bros.’ “Crazy Rich Asians.”
ReFrame, founded by Women in Film and the Sundance Institute, launched the data initiative last June in an effort to recognize and promote gender-balanced films and television shows. It said Wednesday that the increase in recipients of the ReFrame Stamp from 12 in 2017 to 20 stemmed from gains in the roles of department heads and women-of-color leads and co-leads. Still, the report noted that there remained shortfalls in several key areas.

Hysterical and over-the-top parental trio John Cena, Leslie Mann and Ike Barinholtz will do anything to foil their daughters’ prom night sex pact in Blockers, the uproarious hit coming to Digital and the all-new digital movie app Movies Anywhere on June 19, 2018, and Blu-ray, DVD and On Demand on July 3, 2018 from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Hailed as the “perfect comedy for the current era” by Vanity Fair, Blockers is a gender-swapped spin on the classic teen sex comedy, filled with outrageous antics from the parents as their daughters take control of their epic prom night. The Blu-ray, DVD and Digital feature unrated bonus content with even more wild shenanigans including deleted scenes, gag reel, line-o-rama and more!

Teen-sex comedies are nothing new to filmgoers. From classics like Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) and American Pie (1999), to modern day favorites like Superbad (2007) and Easy A (2010), audiences continue to connect with that awkward sexual time present in most high schooler students’ life. It’s a scenario that is both relatable and offers screenwriters an opportunity to sprinkle in some coming-of-age tropes. The writers of Blockers, Brian and Jim Kehoe, certainly chose to do just that, and while their screenplay nails the comedic aspect of teen sexuality and the concerns such presents their parents, the Kehoes fail to create anything meaningful with their story’s dramatic elements. This certainly doesn’t damage the overall enjoyment to be had with Blockers, it just prevents it from being considered among the great teen-sex comedy movies that came before it.

Essentially a girls’ version of Porky’s meets American Pie, Universal’s latest entry in the raunchy-comedy sweepstakes is an R-rated answer to all those endless horny-teenage-boy movies where the whole goal is to see who can lose their virginity first. In the case of Blockers, three teen girls make a #sexpact to do just that on their prom night, picking three unsuspecting boys to do the deed and free them from all the peer pressure.
As I say in my video review (click the link above to watch), the difference here is a good amount of heart thrown into the sexual stew, likely due to the presence of a female director, Kay Cannon, making her behind-the-camera debut after writing the Pitch Perfect films among others. To be sure the script is credited to men, Brian Kehoe and Jim Kehoe, and the film comes from producing partners Seth Rogen and...

It's a sex farce about three high school girls who make a pact to lose their virginity on prom night – until their parents decide to cock-block them, that is. On paper, Blockers sounds bloody awful, like the spawn of Mean Girls and Superbad that nobody wanted. "Well, bite me!" as the teen stars of this a laugh-a-minute party would say. Cheers to debuting director Kay Cannon – a producer-writer on 30 Rock and a screenwriter on the Pitch Perfect comedies – for giving a witty femcentric spin to the script by Brian...

Here comes a digital-entertainment upstart that pledges to put creators first. L.A.-based StreaMe is lining up hand-picked creators to be part of its streaming and content marketplace that will give full control — and, it promises, a generous cut of revenue — to its partners.
Slated to launch this fall, StreaMe hopes to have more than 300 publishers and content owners on the platform out of the gate. It’s already gotten buy-in from a few Hollywood creatives who plan to use StreaMe to distribute content: filmmakers Jim and Brian Kehoe, who co-wrote comedy “Blockers,” and actor-musician-producer-director Thomas Ian Nicholas (“American Pie,” “Living Among Us”).
According to Jp Fatta, StreaMe’s founder and CEO, the company is looking for creator partners who already have a large fanbase and are looking for a better means of monetizing their content. StreaMe (streame.com) will share 60%-80% of the revenue generated by content on its platform to partners,...

Could a post- #TimesUp teenage sex comedy signal a revolutionary new era in female representation on the big screen? Or could Kay Cannon’s brilliantly self-aware directing debut Blockers be a momentary, yet very welcome, glitch in the Hollywood Matrix?
Written by Brian Kehoe and Jim Kehoe, and staring Leslie Mann, John Cena and Ike Barinholtz as three parents trying to stop their teenage daughters from losing their virginity on prom night, Blockers offers up a simple, yet hugely effective idea, which despite presenting all the signs of yet another cliche-ridden gross-out comedy, still manages to impress with its incredibly progressive and “gender positive” narrative.
From the groundbreaking Porky’s (Bob Clark, 1981), to more recent classics such as Superbad (Greg Mottola, 2007) and Bad Neighbours (Nicholas Stoller, 2014), teenage boys have had their fair share of onscreen representation and haven’t had to look too hard to find dozens of teen comedies which celebrate,...

Blockers doesn’t pull off the impossible so much as it turns the tables on a common formula, finding something fresh, empowering, and hilarious in that time-old story of a group of friends making a pact to lose their V-card on prom night. Directed by Kay Cannon, there are a few more real-world complications for our leads, including Lisa (Leslie Mann), a single mother with an unhealthy obsession with her daughter; Mitchell (John Cena), a buff yet sensitive dad in a committed marriage; and Hunter (Ike Barinholtz), a party boy with surprising depth. This studio comedy even finds room for a tender (yet still very funny) coming out story to overbearing parents.
The girls are given their own agency as well. Lisa’s daughter Julie (Kathryn Newton) is dating Austin (Graham Phillips), a good guy with, as we discover in the film’s funniest scenes, an open relationship with his sexually adventurous parents.

It sounds like This is The End directors Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are going to be pretty busy over the next couple years. The duo is gearing up for The Interview (which just gained Lizzy Caplan) and also prepping their animated venture Sausage Party. Now they're producing a new comedy for another duo as Deadline reports Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle writers Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg (who directed Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay) will direct a raunchy comedy once titled Cherries. The duo are currently doing a quick rewrite on the script from newcomers Brian & Jim Kehoe. The story sounds right up the alley of the duo just coming off directing American Reunion as it basically feels like the parental side of the plot of American Pie. The story follows three fathers who are determined to stop their daughters from following through with a pact to lose their virginity on prom night.

Every year, film executive Franklin Leonard releases his list, called The Black List, of most-liked unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. This year's list was compiled from the suggestions of 290 film executives, each of whom picked up to ten of their favorite scripts. Since the list started in 2004, many screenplays ended up being turned into films. In 2005, two of the top three scripts were "Lars and the Real Girl" which was nominated for Best Original Screenplay Oscar, and "Juno" which actually won the Oscar. See the 2012 Black List below, broken up by how many votes each screenplay received. Some of the projects are already in the works. 65 - Draft Day (Rajiv Joseph, Scott Rothman) On the day of the NFL Draft, Bills General Manager Sonny Weaver has the opportunity to save football in Buffalo when he trades for the number one pick. He must quickly decide what he's willing to sacrifice in...

There is either a couple of football fans or Jerry Maguire/Moneyball with this year’s most liked unproduced screenplay. Close to 300 hundred film executives provided with the Black List creators a top ten of their favorite screenplays of the year and the consensus first overall pick (with 65 votes) comes from the recently featured in Variety (10 Screenwriters to Watch 2012) tandem of Rajiv Joseph & Scott Rothman and their drama which has nothing to do with enlisting in the armed forces. Draft Day – about the day in the life of a fictitious Buffalo Bills Gm appears to currently be in turnaround — which only means I expect to see this greenlight perhaps a little later than sooner – worth noting: top spot almost guarantees that the film will indeed go into production (2006, 2010 and 2011 are the exceptions.) Among the more alluring logline subjects we find on the list, I’d be keen on reading the...

While The Black List may be getting most of the press from entertainment news circles when it's announced in December, there's another compilation of the best new ideas and writing being offered to Hollywood movie studios and producers. It's called The Hit List (Thl), and it differs from The Black List in one fundamental way: whereas The Black List (Tbl) is a list of the top unproduced screenplays in Hollywood, several of the screenplays on that list have been purchased or are in development.
Take a look at last year's Black List (Part 1 is here, Part 2 is here) and here we are, one year later, and several of the scripts that made the 2009 list will be coming out in 2011 -- or have already been released (like The Social Network or Due Date). The Hit List is different in that it seeks to give attention to spec screenplays -- that is,...

Media 8 Entertainment is taking the film Duress to the European Film Market, which begins in less than a week. Duress is a story about suicide and the protection of a young daughter. If that was not enough, Duress will also include a charismatic killer, who trains an unwilling protégé in his dark arts. The film is more thriller than horror, but the writing is new and with any luck the film will be picked up for North American distribution, for fans to enjoy. Have a look at the synopsis, which shows potential and a somewhat grainy trailer below.
The synopsis for Duress here:
"Haunted with nightmares of his wife's recent suicide and struggling to mend the relationship with his only daughter, Richard is caught as a witness to the violence of Abner Solvie. He finds himself at the mercy of a charismatic killer and plagued by his involvement in the city's recent murders.
