Exclusive: Jodie Comer starred in one-woman play Prima Facie and won a slew of major awards.
The actress is now narrating an audiobook based on the stage show’s eponymous novel. The audiobook, which comes from Macmillan Audio, comes out on January 30. Suzie Miller, Prima Facie’s playwright, adapted it for the page.
It comes after Comer won both Best Actress at the Laurence Olivier Awards and Best Actress in a Play at the Tony Awards for her performance. The play debuted at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London before transferring to Broadway.
Prima Facie follows Tessa Ensler, played by Comer, a brilliant barrister who’s forged her career in criminal defense through sheer determination. Since her days at Cambridge, she’s carefully disguised her working class roots in a male-dominated world where who you know is just as important as what you know. Driven by her belief in the...

Jodie Comer is no stranger to rave reviews, but The End We Start From is the first time she’s received them for the unfamiliar role of a mother. The Emmy winner has briefly played mothers in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and The Last Duel, but Comer considers Mahalia Belo’s survival drama to be her first proper exploration of motherhood and all its nuances. Based on Megan Hunter’s book and Alice Birch’s adapted screenplay, Comer plays a character simply credited as “Woman,” and at the start of the film, her water breaks around the same time that London is hit by a devastating environmental crisis, resulting in mass flooding.
With a new baby in tow, Comer’s character and Joel Fry’s husband/father character retreat to the countryside like the rest of the city, but food shortages and civil unrest soon cause their young family to separate,...

The Broadway production of Prima Facie has recouped its $4.1 million capitalization costs as of June 18 and broke a house box office record on the way.
The one-woman play, starring Jodie Comer, recouped its Broadway capitalization in 10 weeks of performances — a quick turnaround for any production — and grossed $1,107,829 last week, a record for any eight-show week at the Golden Theatre. This beat the previous box office record at the Golden Theatre held by Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women, starring Glenda Jackson and Laurie Metcalf, which grossed $1,077,919 in the week ending June 17, 2018.
Prima Facie began performances on April 11 and runs through July 2. The production has grossed close to $1 million for several weeks of its run, with an average ticket price hovering around $150 and capacity close to 100 percent.

Jodie Comer now has a Tony to add to her award shelf.
The actress took home the Leading Actress in a Play Tony for “Prima Facie.”
“Prima Facie” is a 100-minute, one-woman play by Suzie Miller that follows a young barrister, Tessa, who often represents men charged with rape. Placing her faith in the court, Tessa isn’t conflicted about the predators she defends…until she is raped herself and must grapple with the ways the court system is systemically broken for survivors of sexual violence.
“To every person who feels represented by Tessa, this has been my greatest honor,” Comer said in her acceptance speech. “And it continues to be! There’s three weeks left!”
In their review, Variety noted, “I have to recommend it, even though I don’t love it—it’s not fun or entertaining or inspiringly good in the way theater can be. But this show,...

Jodie Comer is up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role at the Tonys this weekend for her play “Prima Facie” currently on Broadway, but the actress had to leave a June 7 matinee performance due to worsening conditions in New York City’s air.
Eyewitnesses noted on Twitter that 10 minutes into the show at Broadway’s Golden Theatre, Comer said she couldn’t breathe and was helped offstage by a stage manager. The play eventually resumed with understudy Dani Arlington taking over for Comer.
Representatives for the play shared the following statement with IndieWire: “Today’s matinee of ‘Prima Facie’ was halted approximately 10 minutes into the performance after Jodie Comer had difficulty breathing due to the poor air quality in New York City because of smoke from the Canadian wildfires. The performance was set to start again from the top with understudy Dani Arlington going on for Ms.

According to our current combined predictions, Jodie Comer (“Prima Facie”) is the frontrunner to win Best Actress in a Play at this year’s Tony Awards with 12/5 odds. She already won an Olivier a couple of months ago for her work in the West End production. She would be the fifth Tony winner in this category for a one-woman performance.
In Suzie Miller‘s one-woman show, Comer plays Tessa, a barrister from working-class origins who must deal with an unexpected event that forces her to confront the patriarchal power and morality of the law.
When it comes to solo performances at the Tonys, four have prevailed in this category before. In 1977 Julie Harris won her fifth and final competitive accolade for her portrayal of Emily Dickinson in William Luce‘s “The Belle of Amherst.” In 1986 Lily Tomlin won for playing multiple characters in Jane Wagner‘s “The Search for Signs...

In the play Prima Facie, Jodie Comer is alone on stage for the full length of the show’s 100 minutes, starting as a brash, bloviating barrister, then turning to a quieter, more vulnerable woman trying to find justice for herself in the very legal system that had previously propped her up.
Before making her West End debut in the play last year, the Killing Eve star says she hadn’t appeared on stage (aside from a play in a “very, very small theater” in Scotland when she was 16 years old). “I don’t think I’ve experienced a theater season in New York ever like this one,” noted Artistic Director Gabriel Stelian-Shanks. “There’s been a range, a breadth, an expansion of possibility that has been truly astonishing to witness. Theater makers have inspired not only with their creativity, but also with their drive and determination to serve audiences with vision and talent. These nominees reflect the promise and greatness inherent in the work of theater folk, and I can’t help but be deeply proud.

Killing Eve star Jodie Comer claims Broadway as her own in her tour de force performance of Prima Facie, a scalding indictment of the law and its limits opening tonight at the Golden Theatre.
Comer plays Tessa, a young, working class Liverpool woman who has become one of London’s most promising defense lawyers through sheer intelligence and needle-sharp courtroom instincts. Her specialty – perhaps, or perhaps not, foisted upon her by the cynical male superiors who run things in ways Tessa only slowly comprehends – is the defense of men charged with sexual assault.
Tessa’s outwardly compassionate, woman-to-woman cross-examinations of assault victims are no less effective for their sympathetic overtones, perhaps more so. Her probing questions and geiger-counter instincts for finding the hidden bombs that will blow a victim’s story to smithereens make Tessa an invaluable force in the courtroom.

“I’ll definitely do more theater,” the Killing Eve and Free Guy star told Deadline at the Olivier Awards after-party held at the Natural History Museum in Kensington, London just a hop, skip and a jump from the Royal Albert Hall, where earlier Sunday night the theater world’s luminaries gathered to give themselves a well-earned pat on the back.

So, here’s the good news. Martha Plimpton has packed up her home in New York to live and work in London. Pooches to follow.
Her first gig? Playing Jacque in Shakespeare’s As You Like It on the stage of @sohoplace, the West End’s first purpose-built theatre in half a century. That Plimpton should deliver, with aplomb, the ‘All the world’s a stage’ monologue in Josie Rourke’s lively festive production, seems wholly appropriate because the same viewpoint applies elsewhere in town.

To watch Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) make the Harold Pinter Theatre’s stage her world in Australian writer Suzie Miller’s legal twister Prima Facie confirms that she’s one of her generation’s best thespians. It was also her debut professional theatre performance.

Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) won the best actress prize at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards for her West End debut performance playing a criminal barrister specialising in defending rapists — who is then sexually assaulted herself.
Comer won critical and public acclaim for the solo role in Prima Facie, which is written by Suzie Miller and directed by Justin Martin. James Bierman’s Empire Street Productions will launch the courtroom drama at Broadway’s Golden Theatre from April 11, 2023.
Stephen Graham (The Irishman), like Comer a Liverpudlian, presented Comer with the Natasha Richardson Award for Best Actress, named in honor of the star who died in 2009.
Comer told guests, who included Richardson’s mother Dame Vanessa Redgrave and sister Joely Richardson, that her experience in Prima Facie had been “utterly terrifying, having never trained,” added: “I didn’t know if I could execute this.”
